AIBU to feel offended by dry cleaner’s comment?

Dropped off two items to be cleaned and she looks at me and say - I bet you’ll be asking me to wash that fake leather jacket next (referring to the jacket I was wearing)

I just said no, and it’s actually suede, and then she literally scoffed, like I’d told her it was woven out of a unicorn’s mane.

No, that’s the strange thing. That’s the second time I’ve been and she didn’t serve me the first time. So first time I’ve met her. And the exchange before then was fine?

That’s so wierd. Who thinks suede is leather? Especially if they work with garments. And what would be the problem if you did need your jacket dry-cleaned. That’s some really strange customer service there.

What a weird thing to say! If it's really bothering you, you could always write to the owner of the dry cleaners and make a complaint, but personally I don't think I'd let it bother me.

Real suede is leather. the stuff that's flogged as suede these days is what used to be called suedette. Polyester, usually.

Well I can assure you it’s not polyester it’s 100% goat suede.

There’s always one on MN. They practically wet themselves when they see a tiny chance to put someone down.

And yes suede is a type of leather but it doesn’t look the same as a traditional leather jacket. But also regardless who needs to say anything is “fake”. Sounds like you and that dry cleaner could be best friends.

Um, when people are shitty for no reason it makes me laugh. She was a tit but you don't need to be upset or offended. She clearly has some stuff going on with herself and you just happened to be there. Let it amuse you instead. She's your dry cleaner, what she thinks of your jacket is of no consequence to your life.

Well I'd probably have thought wtf to myself and then forgotten about it as soon as I left the building. Get a new dry cleaner if it bothered you that much but lucky you if that is your biggest problem right now!

I wasn't saying one way or the other about your particular coat as I can't see it - I was remarking because somebody else said that suede wasn't leather when it is, but a lot of things sold now or described by people as suede aren't.

ETA: it's handy that the person at the dry cleaner made the comment, though - as apart from obviously going to a different one in future because of her comments, they do at least confirm that it would be a very bad idea to put that coat in to clean with them, as she wouldn't be able to identify the correct material to clean it with.

So? Are we not allowed resilient enough to handle a single rude comment from a stranger? It doesn't matter one bit what fabric a stranger thinks OPs jacket is.

Had you made a bit of a performance about booking in the other items? I can't think why she would have said "You'll be asking me...........next" otherwise. The other possibility is mistaken identity. You say you hadn't been served by her before.
In any case, I would file it away under "Odd things that have happened to me" and not use that dry cleaner's again, unless I had no choice.

Some people are just nasty. I’ve had some real unkind comments before from people serving me when I never did anything to them. It’s how they go through life I assume. Sometimes it might be jealousy or just generally feeling negative about life.

I would have either said "What if I do want my jacket dry cleaned? It's your job, isn't it?"

OR

been super syrupy sweet and empathetic about how she must be having a really bad day to be so unnecessarily bitchy while at work.

They both work well.
