Ever heard of an orphaned line?

Sorry, posting here for traffic. I'm not a fan of doing that but needs must.

Due to an increase in energy bills over the winter period, I fell behind on my broadband bill. After three months of no payment, I contacted them, asking if I could continue my service and pay the debt off gradually. All fine, what's your account number. I provided it to them and they have no record of my account.

First thought was to panic, debt collectors/bailiffs are on the way. I've called them multiple times and each time, they tell me that they have a record of my account at my previous address but no records where I live now (and have lived for more than five years).

Fast forward 18 months, still nothing from any debt collectors, still keeping the money to pay them in situ and ChatGPT tells me it's an orphaned line that has been disconnected on their system but not physically from the network.

Has anyone experienced this before? It's now been nearly two years and besides setting up a new account, my service provider have said there's nothing they can do.

So you have been receiving bills in your name and for your current address and up until 3 months ago paying them but they don't have a record of the account number? What have they advised you to do? It doesn't make sense that they have no historical record of the account at your current address even if they had cut you off. Are you 100% sure you have been calling your new provider not your old provider?
