AIBU to question criticism of a female MP’s outfit in maiden speech?

Spectator article asking whether Hannah Spencer’s outfit detracted from her maiden speech. Seen similar elsewhere too.

I can’t ever recall the same being asked of a male politician.

Article by a woman too.

Entirely depends on what the outfit was…

Mumteedum · 13/03/2026 20:55

It's the Spectator and she's a green wearing an unusual choice of outfit. I'm surprised you're surprised.

Entirely depends on what the outfit was…

No it doesn't.

Lmnop22 · 13/03/2026 20:59

The outfit was awful though

BauhausOfEliott · 13/03/2026 21:02

YANBU to think her clothes aren’t relevant. YABU to expect anything better from the Spectator.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 13/03/2026 21:02

Just looked, she wore bright block colours: pink, lime green, and strong powder blue.
My politics and hers will differ, but I think she looked fine, and were I ever in her position I'd go all out on colours too - why not? It looked cheerful and celebratory, and I see no reason why it shouldn't.

SleepingStandingUp · 13/03/2026 21:03

It sure was an interesting outfit.
Tbf the article didn't only criticise her outfit, but also her speech and politics. And also accepted that male politians were too boring to have similar discussions about.

She doesn’t have to choose her clothes in accordance with your personal taste.

ScrollingLeaves · 13/03/2026 21:07

I just looked and her outfit style is symbolic of how she is ‘different’ from the establishment. That difference was what people voted her in for I should imagine.

Thats fair. But if you want to wear weird combinations then expect comment!

The Spectator are always going to write articles like this.

Melanie McDonagh needs to grow up …

No it doesn't.

Of course it does.
I haven't looked at what she wore (I'm sure it was fine though) but if she showed up in a clown outfit or bondage gear, of course she would deserve criticism at the very least.

I don’t think it’s any weirder than some of the others, just different. Shabana Mahmood has fabric sewn to the bottom of her formal dresses to modesty reasons. Angela Rayner, Theresa May and Nadine Dorries wore some very jazzy numbers. Michael Fabricant wears a syrup, Boris Johnson looked like a clown, Jacob Rees Mogg like a Victorian child. I think Hannah Spencer looks quite normal really, bright colours, dressed in a style that expresses her character.

No it doesn't.

Well if she chose to wear an inflatable unicorn suit or something with offensive wording on it…

BIWI · 13/03/2026 21:31

But she didn't though, did she?

randomchap · 13/03/2026 21:33

The Spectator attacking a left wing female politician. Shocked, shocked I tell ya

ethelredonagoodday · 13/03/2026 21:35

I actually saw her in the flesh this week. She dresses in a quirky way, but looked great and is very fresh faced and smiley. Quite how long that will last in the HoC though I dread to think.

Wildgoat · 13/03/2026 21:37

male mps tend to dress all the same though, hence why it’s not questioned. It’s a sea of suits, so I’m not sure this is a gender thing. I’m sure if one fronted up in a Hawaiian shirt and yellow trousers it would also be questioned.

And just like that… it does matter what the outfit was. 🤭

Itxitxitcgx · 13/03/2026 21:40

Boris always looked like he’d slept in a skip

twentyeightfishinthepond · 13/03/2026 21:44

Boris deliberately messed up his hair That’s how much of a con artist he was. .

I didn't say that though, did I?

twentyeightfishinthepond · 13/03/2026 21:45

And who believes the working man fags and a pint in the pub act showcased by Farage? What a bullshit artist.
