Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

I get it OP. I recently found a cafe in my town that had a no dogs allowed sign and I was thrilled lol. Every other cafe in my town seems to allow dogs. I even found a cafe situated within a lovely historical church building recently and was gutted to find out it was dog friendly. So they welcome dogs both at the services and in the cafe 🙄

I’ll definitely be going to the dog-free cafe from now on and showing them my support. Might even write a review saying that I like how dogs aren’t allowed to counter the people who probably complain about the policy.

I stay on the top floor of an apartment building and there’s a dog smell in the hallway as there are 3 dogs on either side of me and one annoyingly barks at me if I am anywhere near it when its owner is taking it out. Had another dog in my building pull on its lead edging towards me while barking and I feel quite on edge in the communal areas sometimes. I’ve been in lifts and sometimes someone with a dog has entered and not keen on being on such a confined space with a strange dog. Last time I just walked straight out as soon as the dog came in. There’s also been cases of dog fouling within the building and carpark and communal garden . I wonder if an apartment block with quite small flats and no (private) garden is right place for a dog to be?

I am a bit off topic but I guess my point is it really does feel like there’s no escape from them be it cafe or apartment buildings.

Read my post again re segregation. You must have missed that part

Yes you do that at home. I imagine it is difficult for you. But you can't expect everyone outside of your household to do the same.

I was thinking this.

A generation of dogs that haven't been taught to be left!

I took my dog to places because she was family and I wanted her there with me.
Nothing to do with lockdown, seeing as I got her in 2010.

I don’t expect everyone to segregate animals outside the home. However I do expect to be able to enter a cafe to eat lunch with my child without encountering dogs. I am a dog lover but I do not believe there is a place for them in food establishments. Outdoor areas or pubs may be different.

Can we please stop comparing dogs to children? Children are vital for society. They’ll grow up and their taxes will pay for the country’s pension and healthcare. Dogs may bring joy to their owners but they’re totally unnecessary for society to survive, and the vast majority of the public couldn’t care less if your dog lived or died, and they are a huge waste of the world’s resources.

Children on the other hand are utterly vital to the future of this country. Many countries have recognised this have banned anti-child policies (adult only holidays, restaurants etc). We should be tolerant to children. Dogs deserve zero tolerance whatsoever.

I don't understand this thing about dogs and food. They're not actually touching the food so what's the problem? I take my dog to cafés a lot, but if she starts barking I immediately take her outside. I love to see dogs everywhere, but not in shops. There's no need for that. I would say to anyone who doesn't like dogs to spend some time with one. They really are the loveliest creatures and I'm sure you would change your mind.

What I’ve noticed is staff touching dogs then not washing their hands. I last witnessed this at a premier inn where there were two “assistance dogs”. Not necessarily the owners fault but it’s unfortunate and unhygienic and puts many of us off.

That is not an dog issue. It is a staff and hygiene issue.

Dogs have become a total nuisance. They shouldn't be in cafes end off.

Well I did say it’s not the dog owners fault necessarily.

But my point is it happens a lot in dog friendly cafes - and will continue to happen as long as they do allow dogs especially in these day’s of places being under staffed.

That’s not the only reason I don’t want dogs in cafes but anyway I would just like more options for those of us don’t want dogs there. I am glad my town has at least one place that is dog-free.

PurpleCoo · 13/03/2026 19:28

YABU to object to a dog interacting with your child, when the child had an outstretched hand towards it. It sounds like your daughter was choosing to interact with it and was enjoying it. Ask her to not touch the dog before eating. Carry hand sanitiser.

I always check if people 'mind' if my dog wants to say hello in cafes/coffee shops. If people are stretching out their arms, tapping their knee (come here style) and/or talking to him, then that's consent!!

YANBU regarding the snarling dog. That's out of line and people shouldn't take aggressive dogs to cafes where they will be in close proximity to others.

Generally though, I like dog friendly cafes. It's a wholesome thing to do, to go for a long walk with your dog, and stop at a cafe/pub/establishment for a drink/cake.

People are often traveling with their dogs on holiday. You can't leave dogs unattended in a holiday cottage, at a campsite etc, so in this situation you need to go to dog friendly places.

If you are doing a 12 mile walk, what do you do with the dog when you stop for lunch if places don't let dogs in? So many places would lose so much business if dogs weren't allowed.

mdinbc · 13/03/2026 19:30

The opposite here in Canada, people tend not to bring their dogs into town. A few restaurants with outdoor patios will allow dogs, but never indoors. The only time I would ever need to be at a cafe or restaurant would be if I were am on vacation with my dog, and then I go in to check first. And if I am on a walk and need to pop into a shop, the dog sits outside.

I was a bit shocked to see a dog at a building centre store, but apparently they are now dog friendly. But it's still rare to see.

Do you think it depends what part of Canada? I’d have imagined dogs are in cafes/restaurants a lot on places like Toronto and Vancouver. Never been to Canada but perhaps I just have this idea in my head because its neighbour the U.S. has dogs everywhere.

I like spending time with dogs when outside on a walk in a suitable environment for dogs. I don't like eating inside around them.

Truly disgusting term you have used to describe children who will never be able to work. Shame on you.

Well behaved kids and well behaved dogs are great to see, although you probably wont notice them.

It is the people who let dogs/kids act up that ruin it for everyone else. People see the badly behaved ones and extrapolate that to all kids and dogs. Happens all the time with cyclists!

My dog went with me to cafes as part of our walk. Or we were on holiday, where you rightly say you can't leave them in accommodation, so she was with me in cafes etc.

It is a weird MN thing where you are somehow in the wrong if you have a dog and take them to somewhere that welcomes dogs. You get called entitled. It is bizarre.

KitsyWitsy · 13/03/2026 19:37

It will go full circle. So many people will be fed up and there will be so many incidents that eventually they will be banned again. And that day can't come soon enough.

I am unable to work and get called that. A burden. Why are you so hung up on one word?
Not everyone is going to be "useful" in society. That is a sad fact.
It is also a weird argument to make about dog ownership.

A person or pet does not have to contribute something to wider society to be useful. They are loved and valued by their own family and that is all that matters.
We are not units.

WhatwillitTake · 13/03/2026 19:40

YeOldeGreyhound · 13/03/2026 17:14

I have seen far more badly behaved children in cafes than dogs. Also parents just letting their kid run riot whilst they scroll on their phone. One time, someone's small child actually managed to leave the cafe without the parent noticing.
Also have seen people use cafe tables as a place to change nappies which is disgusting.
I am anticipating the usual comments about children being vital as opposed to dogs. Sorry but if your baby needs a nappy changing, use the loo. If your toddler is wandering up to other customers, then reign them in.

Really?! Gosh, I have never seen nappies being changed on cafe tables, not even in IKEA! Anyhow,I don't agree with comparing small children to dogs, why not have a go at loud groups of adults that like the sound of their own voices, people shouting into phones etc for good measure.
I have seen a lot of people with allergies and fears get hassled by dogs with poor owners. I do digress a little, but our neighbour's dog runs all over the front gardens (while they pause getting shopping out of their boot) barking and growling, then they glare at you like "their" untrained dog is "your" problem.

SweetDreamsAreMadeOfFizz · 13/03/2026 19:41

Honestly I really dislike this trend too. Dogs in pubs, dogs in cafes, dogs in restaurants, dogs on buses, trains, in hotels. I get that they're a family member and beloved BUT that doesn't mean they have to go absolutely everywhere. I don't take all of my family members everywhere with me all of the time!! 😅

Frequency · 13/03/2026 19:42

Yay. Another dogs in cafes/hotels thread. We haven't had one for at least five minutes. I was starting to get worried.
