Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

stillchasingdereksheppard · 15/03/2026 22:02

Agree. I love dogs and have two but I don't want them everywhere I go.
If we take them for a walk and stop at pub or whatever we only ever sit outside. Equally with a cafe, if I stop for coffee then I'd sit outside but usually would grab something to go.
Generally I walk my dogs in the woods (live rurally) and genuinely think they're happier at home snoozing then coming into town with me when I go. Even I don't like being in town!
However it seems everyone takes them everywhere now.
Perhaps I'm just a home bod!

stillchasingdereksheppard · 15/03/2026 22:07

Also I think having dog friendly areas and dog free areas is absolutely the way to go. It gives everyone a choice.
I've been lots of pubs do this and it seems like a good balance. Dogs outside only or only in bar and then a dog free restaurant or area.

This is a good idea in practice, but you will still get someone who hates dogs sit in the dog area and moan about dogs. That happened to me a few days ago. I was there with my mum and her dog, and her dog was the only dog there.

People who hate dogs just don't want to see them out. Ever.

And some dog owners will sit in the non-dog areas and kick off when asked to move.

Both equally unreasonable. Some people on both sides are just selfish.

It's a good idea in theory, but it still overlooks the main issue, and that is the business owners and their preferences as to how their privately owned businesses are run.

Generally, what they want is maximum profit, minimum risk. If dog-free/dog-friendly areas maximised profits, market research would show this, and more of them would be doing it.

We should all want SMBs to make maximum profits in the current climate, and we should certainly want it more than we want the choices to eat out away from dogs in all/most cafes, despite it harming the businesses.

Yes, I have noticed recently that they are in all the shops, whereas before people wouldn’t take them in unless they were service dogs. Is it because of all the designer cockapoos ordered during C19? Too expensive to tie up outside? Or just oblivious and entitled owners?!

If you think designer cockerpoos are expensive you’d be shocked by the price of a decent pedigree KC registered breed. I’m certainly not leaving my dog tied up outside a shop.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 16/03/2026 07:04

I love dogs and have a dog. I don’t want to eat in a cafe or restaurant with them, and really don’t want to share browsing space with them in clothes shops. Leave your dog at home - it doesn’t want to go to John Lewis, and its life is not enriched by the experience of browsing the make up counters. It wants to sleep quietly in its bed in the kitchen and go for a run on the beach.

Harhar · 16/03/2026 07:09

Luckily it’s not compulsory to eat in places that allow dogs. Phew!

WhatNoRaisins · 16/03/2026 07:10

People are allowed to have their own preferences and it's normal to feel annoyed when something changes in an unfavorable way. I remember cafes before dogs were allowed in, this isn't some irrational prejudice. I've eaten and drank in places with and without dogs and can't help but have preference.

Harhar · 16/03/2026 07:11

People are also allowed to table their dogs to places that allow them.

Oh will you bore off - the entire premise of the thread which you keep ignoring, is that if you want to eat out now you almost always have no choice but to deal with a stinking, slobbering, shedding dog!

I think that's it. I wouldn't object the existence of the odd quirky dog friendly cafe or restaurant. Live and let live and all that.

I avoid where I can but if I'm meeting a friend out and about for coffee and have to sit in a room listening to multiple dogs barking because one has started and it's set the others off then I feel entitled to moan and reminisce about the days when no one brought dogs to cafes.

I was in a cafe full of dogs yesterday, none were stinky, slobbering or shedding.

You really don’t. Also we all have to make allowances for all sorts of things when we go out. I hate having to make allowances for noisy, messy, disruptive children that are far louder and noticeable than dogs who always sit by their owners feet having a nap in most cases.

Then don’t go to JL or any other business that is dog friendly then. It is a business and they make that decision based on revenue and research projections. Also I don’t know how you are supposed to have a well behaved and well socialised dog unless you do take them to these places.

I don’t suppose you ever did - you just want to be able to bring an animal everywhere you go without consideration for others
