Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

You dog had zero concept of what a holiday was! That is utter projection

Not true. My older dog gets so excited when we drive to my caravan storage yard as she knows we’re going away in the caravan, she equates going away in the caravan with country walks which she enjoys. Dogs are cleverer than you give them credit for.

RobinInTheCrabApple · 15/03/2026 17:59

My dog having 100% concept of what a holiday is.

I mostly don’t have a problem with dogs in cafes, the only time it’s a pain is if they block the way to the bar/to the toilets. It can be a bit annoying to have a dog barking as well.

A dog lying peacefully under the table is absolutely no problem at all.

I find that a group of loud, drunk people at the next table to me is much more annoying than any dog could be.

Frequency · 15/03/2026 18:26

I'm sorry about your dog @YeOldeGreyhound . It sounds like she knew she was very loved, and she had a great life. I hope you have the best holiday you can.

My dog also knows what a holiday is. If I ask him if he's looking forward to his holiday, he has no fucking clue what I'm saying to him. He'll wag his tail, but only because he's happy I am talking to him, but when he starts seeing bags and cases and his bed being loaded into the car, he wags his entire body because he knows he is going somewhere where all his favourite people will be with no one going out to work or college, and where some of his littermates will be, where he gets extra walks to new places with new smells, where there is doggy icecream that he can eat all to himself because no one else likes it and where there are new foods to try and cosy evenings snuggled under a pub table while people sneak him chips and other treats.

RobinInTheCrabApple · 15/03/2026 18:36

That's lovely @Frequency . We rescued our dog and I think she was put in kennels previously as she would really mope when we got our cases out during the early days. When she'd settled in and had a few holidays with us she would be cock a hoop when we started packing.

ObsessiveGoogler · 15/03/2026 19:02

We could argue this until the cows come home, but basically no-one, whether dog-lover or dog-hater, has specific rights to enter a private cafe, and these decisions are made on economic grounds by owners. Times have changed - yet another transformation that has been accelerated by Covid. I think your best bet is to lobby proprietors for dog- free areas if they are already allowing dogs. And obviously dog owners should take their responsibilities seriously, although that won’t be nearly enough for many people here ( and I recognize won’t be enough for those who are phobic or allergic).

Because if you did have a bit of a think about it then it might become clear that millions of people live with dogs every day and lead healthy lives. In fact, dog owners live longer healthier lives than non dog owners.

"lower blood pressure, improved heart health, lower stress levels, and higher daily activity rates due to walking their pets. Dog ownership is also associated with reduced loneliness, higher psychological well-being, and a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease."

The relevance is that if a dog being around foof or licking your hand was dangerous for you dog owners would be dying in their droves. Instead they are thriving better than non dog owners.

The only thing relevant to the thread is what @ObsessiveGoogler was posted above. You do not have the right to visit a cafe on any terms but the ones the owner sets out. Those terms are set to maximise profits for the owner.

It is sad that dog haters are missing out on that joy of seeing a companion animal enjoying themselves. A dog can bring you so much joy and devotion. I loved watching mine just run about on the beach, run in and out the sea. We only went to beaches when on holiday. No way would I have left her at home. Our holidays were for both of us.

I am tearing up now. She had been gone 2 months. I am going on holiday with my mum and her dog next month, but it wont be the same.

I think that most of the people on this thread are not dog haters at all. I contributed to the thread much earlier, I like dogs very much. I couldnt have a dog because it doesn’t suit my lifestyle (working FT etc) so as much as they bring joy to one’s life not everyone can have one.

Back to the thread. My sister who has horses and rescues just about any domestic animal (devoted) would never dream of taking her dog shopping/in a cafe etc. She will take the dog on walks/dog park, but never in food establishments. I have no time for dogs in cafes etc, but all the time for them in the places they should be.

Harhar · 15/03/2026 20:29

Places they ‘should’ be according to who?

SnoopyPajamas · 15/03/2026 20:37

Dogs trigger my asthma, so dogs in enclosed spaces are a no for me.

I wish dog lovers would try a bit harder to understand that it's not about "hating" dogs at all. Many of us really like dogs! But being allergic to them doesn't mean you just experience the occasional sneeze. It can be really unpleasant, actually. In my case my airway seizes up immediately and I'll be in pain for an hour or more, even after using my inhaler.

Dog friendly spaces are a lovely idea, but they shouldn't be the default.

Harhar · 15/03/2026 20:41

The 5% to 15% of people who are allergic to dogs, I assume, because their desire to eat out trumps the business owner's ability to pay his staff, feed and house himself, and pay taxes.

I wonder how many of those against dogs in cafes are also against the welfare state?

Isthisit2025 · 15/03/2026 20:59

@Harhar not quite sure what you mean but where dogs used to be before everyone thought it was a good idea for them to sit in cafes and restaurants! I was in London today, busy shopping (Oxford street) people with dogs? Really? You take your dog shopping? Seriously? Nope the world has gone mad.

Exactly. Stating preferences as facts.

The owners of the establishments thought it was a good idea. They make more money.

I like dogs I really do but I don’t know why people have to take them everywhere

I don’t live in the UK and I was surprised to see dogs in clothes shops when I was there in the summer.

Yes, I have noticed recently that they are in all the shops, whereas before people wouldn’t take them in unless they were service dogs. Is it because of all the designer cockapoos ordered during C19? Too expensive to tie up outside? Or just oblivious and entitled owners?!

Dog theft is a thing, and no surprise. During lockdown, the price of a puppy of any breed, absolutely soared.

It is also irresponsible to leave a dog tied up outside anyway. it is not under control if the owner is not there. Some dogs will snap if you go near them as they feel trapped by being tied up.

A dog owner taking their dog into a place that allows them is not being oblivious and entitled.

Yes! Extended exposure for me leaves me feeling extremely unwell - flu like symptoms for days. Dog people don’t care though. My BILs horrible gf literally launched her dog at me repeatedly and laughed because I asked for her to keep it away or restrain it, and apparently that was horribly offensive

I would never let my dog approach people, let alone launch at them. Please don't tar all "dog people" with the same brush.
