Three or four baths a week?

christonapushbike · 13/03/2026 14:51

When we redid our bathroom we got a lovely big deep tub with the intention of using it as a nice treat approx once every 2-3 months. DSD enjoys using it 3-4 times a week and complains that her ensuite shower isn't usable as the pressure in her shower is 'too low' (its fine- not a power shower but totally usable!). Am I unreasonable to feel this is completely ungrateful attitude and an ensuite is a massive privilege (only she has one in our house) she spends up to 2 hours bathing in our bath and I've worked out each bath costs £3.50 in gas and water (it's 300 litre capacity). When challenged on why she refuses to use her own bathroom she just shrugs/ scowls. Her ensuite is a shower room with a toilet (no bath) for reference.

You could move to Ireland We do have unlimited water, and it's free!

allthingsinmoderation · 13/03/2026 18:00

If it's purely a cost issue, how does a 10 minute shower compare to a bath?
i cant see the difference would be enormous tbh.
Your DSD prefers baths to showers (nothing worse than a pitiful low power shower) i think you are unreasonable to dictate .
If its the time factor in the family bathroom,id have some sympathy and that should be negotiated if it affects others.

I have a bath every day.

bloody love it.

are you actually complaining about a child using the bath too much?

All of this. Also a daily bather.

I like to spread my baths out nicely over the years, so:

International day of the Arabian leopard (10 Feb)
St Benedict's Day (11 July)
Anniversary of the publication of Das Kapital (14 Sept)
Winter solstice (21/22 Dec)

Just snorted so hard at this I made my cat leave the room

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 13/03/2026 18:01

I have a shower every morning and a deep soak in a bath for an hour every evening.
I love it, sorry but YABU.

If you're struggling to feed everyone/pay the rent I can understand why you've become so concerned about cost/why this is troubling you. I would explain that she can't use the bath anymore as you just annoy afford it.

If you can afford it then you need to seek out some support/therapy for your financial anxiety because fitting a bath that you're only allowed to use four times a year as a treat is absolutely insane. Do get some help.

I agree, with COL lots of families having to cut back and it sounds like baths could be costing nearly £60 a month which might be unaffordable.

Acommonreader · 13/03/2026 18:02

Good god- a bath a few times a year as a TREAT! . Lighten up Oliver Cromwell!

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/03/2026 18:03

Good grief. You clearly don’t like her. I can’t believe you bothered to work out the cost, and that you grudge her £3.50! Jeez.

Verv · 13/03/2026 18:04

Can you not just take her outside and give her a quick spritz with a power hose twice a week OP?
Heaven forbid that the poor "ungrateful" kid enjoys a bath.

You sound like a peach btw.

But it isn't just £3.50 if it 4 times a week 16 times a month. I love a bath but if you're watching bills a shower might be more affordable.

Muffinmam · 13/03/2026 18:06

InveterateWineDrinker · 13/03/2026 17:27

Thanks @Muffinmam

Specific heat capacity and units of energy/power was on the GCSE Physics syllabus rather than maths when I studied it in the early Nineties but the rest is fairly basic adulting.

My public school education was woefully inadequate. I wasn’t educated in the UK.

Cherrytree86 · 13/03/2026 18:06

Surely you can cut cost elsewhere, OP, to accommodate this? Do you buy expensive makeup? Clothes? Meals out? These things can go

Does everyone on here have lots of money? Can't you imagine that some people can't afford any of those things?

theDudesmummy · 13/03/2026 18:09

£3.50 wouldn't even buy a latte in some places. Don't you ever get a takeaway coffee OP? If you do, and you then begrudge a child having regular baths, you really need to take a good look at yourself...

NorthernLightsAreBright · 13/03/2026 18:09

You begrudge her the cost of a cup of coffee 3 x a week?

If she's working and earning, maybe she can contribute more for the water and heating but otherwise you're being a mean stepmum.

Malasana · 13/03/2026 18:10

Poor kid must feel really unwelcome. You actually calculated the cost per bath?

goldenhunter · 13/03/2026 18:11

You’re being unreasonable but also, please find better ways to spend your time than calculating the price of having a bath.

theDudesmummy · 13/03/2026 18:11

She can't be on the breadline if she had the bath installed, which is clearly to her a luxury item.

Jellybunny56 · 13/03/2026 18:12

She’s having a bloody bath honestly get a grip 🤣

Lavenderblue11 · 13/03/2026 18:14

Catza · 13/03/2026 15:00

What will you do with the answer to your question? Surely it doesn't matter whether she loves a bath or whether she is being ungrateful. Knowing the answer to this will not change the situation a single bit.
I totally get the inconvenience and the expense. I am not sure I'd want to fork out £50 a month for one person to use the bathtub either. I can't even remember the last time I had a bath, it seems such a frivolous expense in the current climate... but that also isn't helpful information to you.
You two need to find a compromise. If it's money.. maybe she can contribute. If it is the fact that she occupies your bathroom four times a week, maybe you need to switch rooms around so that she doesn't have an ensuite which she doesn't use and you can use it instead. Maybe she can reduce the number of baths she has altogether or have them at a different time of the day. Any of these solutions are not dependent on the answer of whether she is ungrateful, though.

You actually suggest that OP offers to switch rooms with DSD so that the step daughter has full claim over the bath whilst they have the one with the shower? Are you actually being serious?

Whaleandsnail6 · 13/03/2026 18:14

You installed a bath with the intention on using it 6 times a year, at most?! Surely that makes the bath itself a massive waste of money!

How much does a shower cost? What is the difference between her having a shower and a bath?

I love a bath and prefer it it over a shower so I probably have one 3-4 times a week. Didn't realise it was so frivolous but I find it so relaxing and it's my wind down after a difficult day at work, so I can see why she wants to.

I think there is a meet in the middle ...2 monthly bath is ridiculous but maybe once a week?

FloofBunny · 13/03/2026 18:14

So her baths are costing a maximum of 60 pounds a month. That's calculated on four baths a week, x 4.3 for the longest months.

That's really not much. Leave her alone to bath as much as she wants. Would you begrudge four baths a week to your own child?

A few weeks ago on here, there was a thread on people sharing each other's bath water. 🤣 You could get in after her and have a nice bath too!

ETA: I'm amazed that you installed a bath with the intention of it being used once every few months! A bath is there to be used whenever, in my view, by whoever lives in the house. Are you a tiny bit stingy?

RosaBaby2 · 13/03/2026 18:15

I'm a daily bather, with double day baths if I am off work.

We don't even have a shower and it isn't costing £3.50 a day per bath here, it's usually 2 of us having separate baths every day and it costs way less than that.

I say let her crack on.

Nothing ever happened to you that has changed your financial situation. Mortgage rate change, redundancy, cost of living crisis? You have had a fortunate life.

It isn't much to you, to some people who are just getting through the month it is an awful lot.
