Three or four baths a week?

christonapushbike · 13/03/2026 14:51

When we redid our bathroom we got a lovely big deep tub with the intention of using it as a nice treat approx once every 2-3 months. DSD enjoys using it 3-4 times a week and complains that her ensuite shower isn't usable as the pressure in her shower is 'too low' (its fine- not a power shower but totally usable!). Am I unreasonable to feel this is completely ungrateful attitude and an ensuite is a massive privilege (only she has one in our house) she spends up to 2 hours bathing in our bath and I've worked out each bath costs £3.50 in gas and water (it's 300 litre capacity). When challenged on why she refuses to use her own bathroom she just shrugs/ scowls. Her ensuite is a shower room with a toilet (no bath) for reference.

Between this and the Mogadishu thread, what the hell is everyone smoking this afternoon?

Bath salts

Dont be stupid, its obviously

Talk like a Pirate day
Puddle jumping day
Day of the Ninja
Monkey Buffet Day

I am genuinely made up to find day of the ninja is a thing.

i have always celebrated talk like a pirate day since teaching a student who celebrated it every year and since then if I’m teaching I do pirate themed maths lessons (maths teacher) and we all have to talk like a pirate all day. Yes even the sixth formers.

a bath feels like a very appropriate way to celebrate talk like a pirate day.

Growlybear83 · 13/03/2026 17:40

I can’t believe anyone would be so tight and petty as to calculate the cost of a bath! 🤣🤣🤣

chateauneufdupapa · 13/03/2026 17:40

You are being pathetic

Ninerainbows · 13/03/2026 17:40

What a weirdo. Who works out the cost of a bath? Do you have an egg timer on the shower?

theDudesmummy · 13/03/2026 17:41

I like to spread my baths out nicely over the years, so:

International day of the Arabian leopard (10 Feb)
St Benedict's Day (11 July)
Anniversary of the publication of Das Kapital (14 Sept)
Winter solstice (21/22 Dec)

powersthatbe · 13/03/2026 17:42

You are something else OP. In a mess over “my bathroom” and £14/wk. You sound like a teen or someone not at all suited to being any kind of parent.

BauhausOfEliott · 13/03/2026 17:42

InveterateWineDrinker · 13/03/2026 16:29

Raising 300 litres of water from 8 celsius to 40 celsius will use 11.2 kWh of energy, or about £3.10 at the current electricity price cap. 300 litres of metered water (United Utilities rate) would be another £1.10 on top.

Quite apart from the cost, it's an absolutely obscene waste of scarce natural resources and an environmental disaster.

The OP shouldn't have installed a bathtub then, should she? Installing a bathtub and then complaining that the family actually uses it is madness.

chateauneufdupapa · 13/03/2026 17:42

Baths are incredibly beneficial for wellbeing and mental health. Clearly you don’t like the poor girl

InveterateWineDrinker · 13/03/2026 17:43

Ninerainbows · 13/03/2026 17:40

A few years ago our water company issued free egg-timers to put in the shower for the precise purpose of conserving water by limiting shower times.

Water is a precious natural resource that we do not have unlimited quantities of. Same with energy. It's quite right that people should monitor and limit their uses of these things.

That sounds entirely logical to me

canisquaeso · 13/03/2026 17:44

My DD and her insane “everything showers” have doubled my water bill so yes, I’d be putting a stop to constant baths if you think that will drive up the bill.

mydogisthebest · 13/03/2026 17:45

Well of course baths cost a lot for water and heating the water. I hate baths, such a waste of time, water and energy. Showers are so much better.

You would have been better off not bothering to put a bath in put just a nice big walk in shower

So now we have 16 days.

Whats going to happen? This is going to bankrupt OP

But that is probably why she installed in her en-suite, NOT a family bathroom. It is not for general use.

£14 a week is ridiculous for one person to have a bath. Over £700 a year?? crazy money.

Once a week would be my compromise.

It's not in the en-suite!

The DSD has her own en-suite and is the only one who has one. Why don't people read?

Xmasbaby11 · 13/03/2026 17:51

We have a large bath too and dd uses it often, as does Dh. They both often have a shower and a bath in a day. It’s never occurred to me to work out the cost. 3 or 4 baths a week sounds normal and fine!

Holy fucking what? I grew up in the days where we had baths and no showers and I love a shower now (my council flat has no bath)but you are counting the cost.

When my brother moved in with my mum for a while after his relationship split he used her bath as her shower stopped working and I'm sure she was aware of the extra fuel costs of using the bath the shower but she wasn't sitting counting them up either

Why did you install this if you can't afford it?

Sake

likelysuspect · 13/03/2026 17:52

Ahem.....

International Bath Day is celebrated annually on June 14th.

Founded in 2016, this day commemorates the date that ancient Greek scientist Archimedes is believed to have discovered the principle of buoyancy while taking a bath. Upon realizing he could measure an object's volume through water displacement, he famously leaped out of his tub and shouted "Eureka!".

Key Aspects of International Bath Day:

  • Purpose: To celebrate the art of bathing, promote relaxation, and encourage self-care through a leisurely soak or refreshing shower.
  • History: The date is chosen because the legend suggests Archimedes' discovery occurred one week before the start of summer (which begins on June 21st).
  • Activities: It is a day to take time for yourself, use bath products, or teach children about science using bath toys.

Other Related Days:

  • World Toilet Day: Observed on November 19th to raise awareness about global sanitation crises.

Right. So two definite days then.

How much do water do you think it takes to produce one bottle of wine and ship it to the UK? I promise you it's far more water than a bath.

I like to follow Cleopatra's lead and fill my bath with the milk of 700 donkeys. Perhaps the OP could try this to get her water bill down.
