Three or four baths a week?

christonapushbike · 13/03/2026 14:51

When we redid our bathroom we got a lovely big deep tub with the intention of using it as a nice treat approx once every 2-3 months. DSD enjoys using it 3-4 times a week and complains that her ensuite shower isn't usable as the pressure in her shower is 'too low' (its fine- not a power shower but totally usable!). Am I unreasonable to feel this is completely ungrateful attitude and an ensuite is a massive privilege (only she has one in our house) she spends up to 2 hours bathing in our bath and I've worked out each bath costs £3.50 in gas and water (it's 300 litre capacity). When challenged on why she refuses to use her own bathroom she just shrugs/ scowls. Her ensuite is a shower room with a toilet (no bath) for reference.

Ideas for reducing bath occurances:

Shark
Pigeon spikes
Set the plumbing up to sound like a crying baby when the taps are on
Do a big poo at the times when she really wants to bathe
Train a crow to peck the bathroom window incessantly

Much better ideas. Also:
Purchase a loud alarm, triggered when she tries to turn the taps on.
A ring tailed lemur trained to run off with the plug.
Rancid offal in the drain.

Clearly not! I'm wondering what the 3/4 red letter days are.

King's Birthday
Bonfire Night
St Swithin's Day
Brexit Day Anniversary (celebration or drowning sorrows, depending on pov)

I admire your ability to explain this sort of math. We were never taught this in high school.

Thanks @Muffinmam

Specific heat capacity and units of energy/power was on the GCSE Physics syllabus rather than maths when I studied it in the early Nineties but the rest is fairly basic adulting.

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/03/2026 17:27

I can’t believe anybody thinks a bath is a nice treat every 3 to 4 months.

Imisscoffee2021 · 13/03/2026 17:28

I love a bath, bathe every day. If she's not stopping people using the tub or the loo by using it, doesn't sound like it as you say you only meant to use the tub as a treat, then you're being unreasonable. And if you're quibbling over £3.50 then you're either on a strict budget or you simply don't feel she has a right to use that much money in your household.

Interesting. I was thinking:
Trafalgar Day
National Fish Finger Day
Shakespeare's birthday
Candlemas

I find it hard to argue with any of those. Maybe she could stretch to 8?

EasternEcho · 13/03/2026 17:31

You've sat and worked out that a bath should be allowed only once a quarter? At a cost per person of £14 per year? YABU.

fivepastmidnight · 13/03/2026 17:31

It's not 'your' bath ,it's the family bath, in the family bathroom. I take it you don't view her as family which is why you don't like her using it? Just because she's got a shower in her own suite, t he two things are completely different experiences. I also don't understand why you bothered having a bath installed if you only intend to use it a few times a year. You're clearly not using the bath so what does it matter how long she's in there for ? If you need to use the toilet or wash your hands surely could you use her en suite.

I wonder if she goes in there for so long to get away from you bitching about her using other stuff to her. Perhaps you should insist she only baths at her mother's

Ocelotfeet27 · 13/03/2026 17:32

Lol at you planning to use the bath every few months. For that YABVU. I think YABU also about DSD having baths. If you cant afford it then ask her to limit it to eg twice a week. If you can afford it stop moaning. She could be doing much worse - or more expensive - things with her time.

theDudesmummy · 13/03/2026 17:32

You actually worked out the exact cost of a child having a bath? When you are obviously not on the breadline. Now I have heard it all. Poor girl. I am a stepmother too, I would have sold my jewellery and gone without puddings rather than tell my stepdaughters to curtail their ablutions. Dont be so mean rridiculous.

Yes exactly, we're racking bath costs with all these fancy days.

Octavia64 · 13/03/2026 17:34

I can lend op my cats if she wants the child out of the bath as they have a nasty habit of trying to get in with me, realising it contains water and then clawing most of my skin off in their attempts to get out.

not relaxing.

I have a lovely bath shelf too, the refilling of snacks needs to be discussed as I can be in there for a couple of hours, DH really is failing in this respect 🤣

Tuck a big bag of Walkers Sensations (sweet chilli flavour) behind the bubble bath in the bathroom cabinet.

CocoaTea · 13/03/2026 17:35

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 13/03/2026 15:15

No it isn't. What if someone had OCD and wanted four baths a day and the family were struggling financially? The bathroom belongs to the whole family, not just one person. And she doesn't pay the bills.

OP I think you are getting it in the neck here because you are the stepmother. If you were her birth mother I imagine people would be more sympathetic.

“OP I think you are getting it in the neck here because you are the stepmother. If you were her birth mother I imagine people would be more sympathetic.”

No.
Please don’t do this.

People are commenting directly on the issue - no one has said anything that I have seen that references the stepmum relationship.

It’s just plain stinginess. Nothing to do with being a step mum or whatever you were alluding to.

Please stop using that trope to shut down conversations where people are being clearly unreasonable - whatever their “parental status” is. It’s tired, lazy and inaccurate.

Between this and the Mogadishu thread, what the hell is everyone smoking this afternoon?

I wonder if the OP is Rachel Reeves.
