I got a new job in January as an SEN support in school, term time only. When I accepted the job (which I love , and I love the kids and people there) I had a few - 4 - holidays in there term time. The schools round us all have similar but slightly different term times and holidays so my children have a few weeks that differ to the holidays this school has.

When I accepted the job I told them about 3 of the holidays ( holiday one is 1 day, another 4 days and the other a week 5 days ) and that was absolutely fine. They said no problem, they’d honour them
as booked before I started and going forward to only book there holidays which I absolutely will and agree with:

The final holiday number 4 I didn’t mention as I knew I could ring up and move to match the schools holiday a week later: however on ringing up the holiday company it’s £1500 more expensive. We can’t afford/ justify that. It requires 3 days off work. I’m not entitled to parental Leave as I wouldn’t have worked there a year. Bar , saying im sick which I’m reluctant to do as I hate lying and I love where I work and the people , what would you advise to do? Problem is if I ask them and they say no then I can’t go off sick, I morally feel in a conundrum as I can’t lie and wouldn’t want to. I didn’t want to mention holiday 4 as I didn’t want them to think i was taking the mick and I knew I could move it .

Thanks so much for enlightening me. Please can you send me my contract over and I’ll send it to HR and ask them about my pay? I don’t want to be being screwed and I’ll say a poster on mumsnet says I am being. Again thank you for this!

Just explain that you thought you'd be able to change it but you can't. I'd show proof of when it was booked.

As the title says what would you do.

I would go on holiday and make memories with my family, life is just time, an unpromised amount of time which you have been given to experience life.
Society may force you to sell that time but it’s your time, it’s not natural to have to give all of your autonomy away and be dictated to.
You choose what time they can buy, they can have most of it but not those days.

I'm not sure why anyone would come on here to pick at the OP's grammar. She's on a casual chat forum-not at work. Many staff in education have term time contracts so their monthly take home pay is less than in other jobs of the same salary. That explains why her take home pay may appear low. She is correct.

Good luck OP you've had a hard time. They will likely offer you unpaid leave in this instance.

7 holidays a year sounds perfect to me OP! I hope they're understanding.

I wish it was our norm 😅 we’ve got a few big family birthdays / weddings this year that are holidays so it’s a few more than normal, but it’ll be lovely!

Thanks- I did re read it and realise I had written incorrectly but I was typing fast and a bit stressed about it! Part of the reason I absolutely love the job is because you go into a bubble of kind lovely people - no outside world and just kids and a team who all work together even if you’re being kicked by a kid who’s deregulated 😂 and I came on mumsnet for help but it made me want to hide back in my happy bubble 😂

And yes I think that’s why my pay is less? I don’t think I need to sort it out? I am paid over 12 months and I’m full time in school but I don’t think it’s as much as a full time normal job?

It's less because you are having deductions for the holidays which are unpaid (other than the standard 5 weeks). This comes off monthly so it is quite a bit less take home pay than a similar job which isn't term time. If it works the same as my local authority. So yes your take home pay may seem incorrect/short to others but it's not.

Honestly, you have 7 holidays in the year and are arguing in here about whether or not you should move one of them because it would cost you more than you can afford. Just do what you want to do and leave it there. You are going around in circles responding to replies and just getting yourself more confused. Make a decision and get on with it
