Churchill off the Fiver

Why are the “patriots” such massive snowflakes?

Churchill is being removed from the fiver and replaced why images from nature. It’s a NATIONAL DISGRACE apparently.

Yet they don’t seem that bothered about Jane Austen, Alan Turing and J.M.W Turner being removed and replaced by nature too.

Why are their toys out of the pram over EVERYTHING.

Or is nature woke too now?

For the record, I think a nice squirrel, hedgehog or fox would be quite nice.

I’d rather swap it entirely for euros. Hard rejoin.

God. Who wouldn't? Sigh.

Nosejobnelly · 13/03/2026 11:40

I’ve seen some BS on Facebook about this and challenged the posters - no reply.

Mymanyellow · 13/03/2026 11:44

Hope we get a kingfisher on one of them. Beautiful.

KnickerlessParsons · 13/03/2026 11:52

It was discussed on Newsnight last night, and the audience member who brought the subject up was largely dismissed (and rightly).

Churchill isn't "being removed" - our bank notes are being redesigned, as they are every so many years. And as someone on NN pointed out, the old ones will be in circulation for some time after the new ones are introduced. It's not an overnight thing.

Kite for Wales, pine marten for Scotland.

This reminds me of that post from years ago about the dad who didn’t know what noise a Pine Marten made (reading his kids a nature book) so he just used to go, ‘MARTY MARTY MARTY MARTY’. Grin

Maybe after we've had animals, we could have famous landmarks or landscapes

Stonehenge, Arthur's Seat, Giant's Causeway, Yr Wyddfa etc

Takes away any politics from it

I think it's a really good idea. If you don't have people you don't get everyone moaning that there aren't enough women, or people from non-white backgrounds, or whatever. Animals and landmarks are much less controversial.

The audience member was a total plank, and blamed it on the Green Party and general liberal leftie wokery.

And this!

ScholesPanda · 13/03/2026 16:01

It's pathetic. But inevitable Farage would stir it up. People on social media saying things like 'bet they stick Mayor Khan on instead'.

However, I do find for some people, change of any kind is utterly terrifying. Once we've had animals for a few years some of the same people will be terrified of ever losing them again, it's the change that scares them as much as anything.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/03/2026 16:20

Also, surely the natural beauty of the UK is as worth celebrating as anything?

I believe Sweden’s national anthem, for example, is about it’s beautiful mountains, or at least the beginning of it is.

Surely it’s patriotic to recognise this too?

Wise words

Conservatives on either side of the pond seem to be the whiniest little snowflakes in history. Genuinely pathetic little children who can't stand the idea of anyone viewing the works differently

Or a Robin, or a Wren, or an Owl - I'd settle for any bird personally.

They’ve done similar at my child’s secondary. Removed one of the historical figures attached to the House as their politics back in the 18th century weren’t PC enough.

Honestly I’m so tired at politicians getting caught up in this peripheral nonsense whilst society gets poorer and poorer. The cynic in me thinks is its purposeful as it obfuscates rather well so no one looks at the bin fire currently blazing around us.

Of course. Let’s make it a left wing/right wing debate. How original.

We all mostly use card payments now anyway. Very rarely use cash.£5.00 note was sizeable when Churchill was in his prime. Now hardly buys some milk and bread! Bring on the cute creatures I say

Forthesteps · 13/03/2026 18:50

Good. He was a nasty piece of work who believed people with Learning Disabilities should be sterilised and put away for life.
Sick of the ignorant, knee jerk hero worship from the flag shagging brigade.
