To think 'action plan' is more commonly used than 'plan of action'

In an argument with my 17yo DC who say it's a 'plan of action' and 'no one says plan of action...'. They've been laughing and saying 'action plan' in American accent like I'm suddenly the one overtaken by Americanisms.

YABU - it's plan of action
YANBU - it's action plan

So what do you use and are you over 30?

Plan of action, yes over 30.

PrincessOfPreschool · 12/03/2026 17:54

Sorry, they have been saying "no one says action plan"...

I think both are fine, but I would be more likely to say Action Plan personally.

I'm in my fifties.

Plan of action 50

Lambington · 12/03/2026 17:57

Plan of action is correct. (Derived from military jargon). I'm 41.

FairyBatman · 12/03/2026 18:00

A plan of action is a plan to tackle an issue, an action plan is a concrete document e.g in a performance improvement plan at work.

AuntyBulgaria · 12/03/2026 18:01

I think they have different meanings. A plan of action sets out how I would tackle a problem. An action plan is something you give someone or organisation that they have to comply with to resolve some deficiency.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 12/03/2026 18:05

I too think they are different. A plan of action is an outline of what needs to be done. An action plan is a detailed plan of specific actions.

JustGiveMeReason · 12/03/2026 18:09

What @FairyBatman , @AuntyBulgaria , and @MontyDonsBlueScarf said.

DappledThings · 12/03/2026 18:11

Also agree they are different things. An action plan is an ordered list of things to do to meet objectives. A plan of action is a more general agreement on how to tackle something.

Plan of action...I'm 57...
