Why are boys clothes so rubbish ?!?

Runnersknee · 12/03/2026 13:35

My little boy has just outgrown 18-24 month clothes and omg I knew there was a lot less
choice for boys compared to girls but I’m disappointed by the selection.

Choices seem to be tracksuits, clothes covered in characters / graphics or baggy checked trousers and everything in grungy colours. I’m not ready to stop with the ‘cute’ cloth s for my baby, he’s only 2!! And it’s one tiny rails of clothes for boys compared to a massive section of girls things !!

Most boy mums I know feel the same. I can’t understand why shops continue to make the boys option an after thought ?!?

Also if anyone can recommend places that actually do nice things for boys then please let me know !! Up till now I’ve been dressing my boy mainly in the supermarket clothes but really not keen on their boys offering.

H&M have cute boys clothes

Favouritefruits · 12/03/2026 13:38

I agree high street clothes for little boys is awful! I still think there’s lovely little boy ‘stuff’ in Boden and Joules, but even M&S had no choice!

Doranottheexplorer · 12/03/2026 13:43

Hate to be the "just you wait' person but if you think it's bad while he's a toddler, it only gets worse...

Uniqlo had some great t-shirts for little ones when I was there a couple of weeks ago. I always found H&M, Next and M&S had better options online than in store, Tu is best of the supermarket brands imo but still hit & miss.

sunsetsites · 12/03/2026 13:43

I’ve always found nice clothes for my 2y. I tend to to for colourful outfits, go between leggings and soft wide leg trousers.
The size of the girls and boys section is generally very similar imo, you might not like it all but there is a range of things available.

I shop mostly at next for him, with some H&M, Zara and TU/ Asda.

Jellybunny56 · 12/03/2026 13:43

Ah I have one of each and actually find shops have more boy clothes I like than girl clothes! M&S, Zara, H&M, Boden and Next always have some gorgeous boy bits in, JoJo and River Island usually have some nice stuff too!

shellyleppard · 12/03/2026 13:44

Try Primark or Asda.Used to have the same problem with my son 20 + years ago!!

BarnacleBeasley · 12/03/2026 13:44

I don't live near any shops, so we normally buy online and some of the supermarkets do some quite nice colourful stuff for boys, but maybe more than you'd see stocked in your local branch. George at Asda is not too bad. Otherwise if you want to go a bit more expensive there's Frugi, Kite, Toby Tiger, and my boys' favourite colour is 'rainbow' so they like Little Bird stuff from Next.

snoopyfanaccountant · 12/03/2026 13:52

Have a look online at Vertbaudet. It's a French company and the colours are much nicer than a lot of what is sold here in the shops. Their baby range goes up to age 4.
We have French neighbours and their 8 year old son is regularly in really nice colours. I saw him a few days ago in a mustard colour sweatshirt and joggers and it looked so smart.

Howsurvive · 12/03/2026 13:56

Vinted, search for brand like Bonpoint, Hartford, Bellerose, beautiful and well made, extortionate at full price but not too bad second hand.

H&M - it takes effort but you can find expensive looking basics there sometimes. Zara is also much nicer these days

It doesnt get better im afraid
Its always annoyed me that they have rail upon rail of girls clothes
And about half a rail of boys clothes.

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/03/2026 14:00

I really like Blade and Rose sets - cute and colourful

Next online generally have more variety than in store and you csn get nice nice colours. I picked up a bright blue pair of chinos earlier for my 2 year old

I got some colourful leggings from asda onlibe recently - unisex but they work

Otherwise i stick to brands like Kite, Frugi, Maxamorra, mini boden - they arent cheap but i generally buy them second hand on vinted.

goingforgold123 · 12/03/2026 14:01

Monoprix in France have the most beautiful childrens clothes. I dont know if they ship to other countries.

Cannedlaughter · 12/03/2026 14:03

Have a look at Zara , they have some lovely clothes and I found the sweatshirts really nicely but rather than the big standard shape.

persisted · 12/03/2026 14:04

I buy from Frugi and Little Green Radicals in the sales

ChickenAndCustard · 12/03/2026 14:05

I have a 6yo boy and a 3yo girl and couldnt agree more OP! All the cute, colourful boys' clothes are from the more expensive brands - Frugi, Boden, Toby Tiger, Jools Oliver etc. And when they’re little and going to outgrow it all so quickly I'm loathe to spend £100s every few months!
I tend to look on Vinted for European brands, which tend to be more unisex IME. Or search (on either new or second hand shopping sites) for specific patterns, e.g. safari themed, ocean themed etc, which are often more colourful. Next also often has boys t-shirts in that are black with big abstract colourful patterns on them. From the supermarkets I sometimes used to buy joggers and jumpers from the girls' section if they weren't obviously frilly - think tie-dye patterns.
But agree with the PP who said it sadly does get worse as they get older. I really struggle now to find anything for DS that isn't grey or khaki, covered in Marvel characters, or have an obnoxious/inane slogan on the front.
Mind you, the girls' selection is often just as heavily gendered; you can't move for pink and lilac unicorns and glitter. It's all very frustrating if you just want nice, colourful, comfortable clothing that doesn't play into all sorts of problematic stereotypes.

Runnersknee · 12/03/2026 14:05

Thank you for the suggestions so far - seems like I will be needing to up my boys clothes budget 😂

Just really feel the high street is missing a trick, why shouldn’t boys have the same option as girls 😫

You need to go higher end for nicer boys clothes unfortunately - Jojo Maman Bebe, Trotters, Mini Boden.

John Lewis and M&S do more colourful clothes for younger boys but you have to search the websites and the offering once past 8 or so from them is poor.

This is very true my cousins wife is French and they live there
We met their 3 little grandsons recently, and they were all dressed very smartly, the one year old had a lovely little pair of brown leather shoes on .

Isthateveryonethen · 12/03/2026 14:06

Try French brands, they have the best clothing for style, comfort, solid colors and functional

Anononony · 12/03/2026 14:07

For cute try brands like little bird, frugi, maxomorra, villervalla

All more pricey to buy new but widely available on vinted and more cutesy/colourful than high street :)

MintTwirl · 12/03/2026 14:08

Honestly 15 years ago I had this issue, there is loads more out there now for that age. Most supermarkets, H&M, Primark, MAtataln etc sell colourful bits for younger boys.

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 12/03/2026 14:08

My oldest dc was kitted with H&M. Back in 1989!!
Still my preferred place for dc's stuff.
I think the boys stuff is fab.
Ds is 11 and still loves their clothes. He is skinny and they do the elasticated waist bottoms!

I mean if I go onto next right now their boys section has about 20% more total items than girls. The issue is just that you don’t like them, but no one’s going to love the whole girl section either.

Well nothing stopping you from buying bits from the “girls” section is there?

Runnersknee · 12/03/2026 14:12

@sunsetsites that definitely hasn’t been my experience tbh and especially not in stores.
