Why are boys clothes so rubbish ?!?

My little boy has just outgrown 18-24 month clothes and omg I knew there was a lot less
choice for boys compared to girls but I’m disappointed by the selection.

Choices seem to be tracksuits, clothes covered in characters / graphics or baggy checked trousers and everything in grungy colours. I’m not ready to stop with the ‘cute’ cloth s for my baby, he’s only 2!! And it’s one tiny rails of clothes for boys compared to a massive section of girls things !!

Most boy mums I know feel the same. I can’t understand why shops continue to make the boys option an after thought ?!?

Also if anyone can recommend places that actually do nice things for boys then please let me know !! Up till now I’ve been dressing my boy mainly in the supermarket clothes but really not keen on their boys offering.

Dress him in girls clothes, smash the gender roles.

Or just do you best not dress him in something dinosaur related.

PurplePastaBake · 12/03/2026 16:07

I feel you OP, but it gets worse past 2-3 clothes. Mines currently in 3-4 going in to 4-5. Every size up gets more limited if you don’t want sharks, crocodiles or skateboards.

I really like H&M, I’ve managed to get quite a few bits from there. Their baby range goes up to 4 too so the cute bits are available for a bit longer. It’s probably my favourite place for boys clothes at the moment. Their sizing can be a bit off though so definitely check the reviews before picking a size.

I like next too but they definitely have their fair share of boring boys clothes too so I do end up searching through endless pages to find the things I like.

What style do you like? Maybe if you share a few bits you like people could recommend where to get similar in bigger sizes?

ERthree · 12/03/2026 16:12

I miss Adams childrens wear store, they always had great boys clothes.

Totomanoto · 12/03/2026 16:53

Lindex, Maxomorra, smafolk, duns, little bird, frugi all do lovely bright clothes. I hated grey and blue rubbish for my boys so they always (and still do!) dressed in colourful clothes. Next have some lovely things too, and tu can be quite good!

soundsys · 12/03/2026 17:00

H&M and Lindex I found the best.

MalvernHillbilly · 12/03/2026 17:40

If you look on Vinted you’ll find lots of lovely ‘gender neutral’ clothes. Look for Frugi, Piccalily, Mini Boden, Duns, Maxomorra, Villervalla and others. If you keep using those search terms the app will start suggesting other similar brands.

It’s infuriating quite how gendered children clothes are. I buy what we like regardless of whether it’s aimed at boys or girls. Supermarkets are often a good source of cheap leggings that any child can wear but the tops are usually heavily gendered.

Mumofoneandone · 12/03/2026 17:59

Really worth raiding vinted for children's clothes. Many of the more expensive brands for a fraction of the price. Items barely worn or brand new even!
My son has a real style about his clothing......

GardensBooksTea · 12/03/2026 18:43

Someone else has suggested French brands - I've got lots from Verbaudet over the years, and it's very reasonably priced too. I'm quite disappointed that my son is about to grow out of their biggest sizes!

hazelnutvanillalatte · 12/03/2026 18:43

Check on Vinted. There are cute boys clothes - Boden, M&S, Frugi, Next, Arket, H&M, Zara...it's not all tracksuits with truck decals

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/03/2026 19:29

You do have to look in places like Zara, sometimes they have nice stuff sometimes it’s awful. I bought DNephew a pair of corduroy trousers that his cousin had too.

igelkott2026 · 13/03/2026 15:24

The likes of Crew Clothing and Lazy Jacks have some nice kids' clothes, although it is probably still skewed to girls.

Girls like dinosaurs too but not in some dull mustardy-grey colour.

But the manufacturers clearly think it's what parents want.

Hate to be the "just you wait' person but if you think it's bad while he's a toddler, it only gets worse...

Uniqlo had some great t-shirts for little ones when I was there a couple of weeks ago. I always found H&M, Next and M&S had better options online than in store, Tu is best of the supermarket brands imo but still hit & miss.

Likewise, we are moving from 8yo and it’s gone from neutral boring colours to truly dire, clothes with Minecraft. (DS doesn’t play.)

BarnacleBeasley · 13/03/2026 16:00

OMG thank you so much to PPs who've recommended Vertbaudet - I've just been on there and seen reversible sequin t-shirts in the boys' range! DS is going to be so excited.

JC89 · 13/03/2026 16:04

They are expensive but Frugi have lovely bright clothes for boys (and girls), they get a lot of use in our house! Keep an eye out for their sales...

Imisscoffee2021 · 13/03/2026 16:06

Depends on on your style but I find my 2 ye old sons most colourful clothes on Frugi, Next, Little Green Radicals, Verbaudet (for nice European pastels and natural shades).

Plinketyplonks · 13/03/2026 16:06

I liked Zara for my boy when he was under six. And Vinted!

Tesco had gorgeous little dresses with dinosaurs on them a couple of years ago.

hopspot · 13/03/2026 16:23

It’s awful. I complained once in Sainsbury’s when the only boys stuff was covered in minions. There hadn’t been a film release for years and I hate yellow!

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 13/03/2026 16:31

You can put him in girls clothes too… I saw someone do an instagram video of “girls clothes I bought my toddler boy in Next” and there was lots of cute jumpers in pastel colours, striped trousers etc that were perfectly unisex but just in the girl section.

ETA it was caitlinandleahh if you want to find the video.

Neighbours87 · 13/03/2026 16:33

Dunnes online has great clothes for boys. Very reasonable aswell

ArtichokeAardvark · 13/03/2026 16:40

Boden, joules, frugi, verbaudet, kite are good for toddlers. Crew is good when they are slightly older (my DS is 8) and I also hunt through vinted listings for Ralph Lauren. There's a Cornish brand called Lighthouse who are great for tops and raincoats. John Lewis usually good for basics in bright colours. I gave up on the supermarket offerings years ago, the boys' clothes are awful.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 13/03/2026 16:45

Lindex has lovely clothes for boys and girls.
I got my son a long sleeve top covered in cute cartoon Dalmatian’s for age 5.

ArtichokeAardvark · 13/03/2026 16:47

Forgot one - Hatley! Canadian brand but they ship to the UK. John Lewis also has a limited selection, usually of their waterproof layers.

Advocodo · 13/03/2026 17:06

I love little boys clothing and dislike girls clothing and that is as a mum of 2 girls and 2 granddaughters. Luckily I have a grandson too and find lots of lovely clothes for him!
