To go on neighbours driveways and use their bins

Recycling day here, and we've all got wheelie bin style recycling bins.

It's very windy and a few bins have been blown over, scattering recycling down the street. Quite a lot on the over the road neighbours driveways. I've gone across and put the escaped recycling in their bins. Correctly sorted of course.

Now I'm worried that they won't appreciate me using their bins.

I've put mine away as I don't want to be chasing my recycling down the ra

Did the recycling come from their bins?

DameOfThrones · 12/03/2026 12:09

Why have you put yours away before collection?

Arlanymor · 12/03/2026 12:11

So you’ve put your recycling their bins?

No idea where it came from

Why have you put yours away before collection?

Because they were only a quarter full and I didn't want them blowing over

Don’t think about it - well done for picking it up

So you’ve put your recycling their bins?

Nope, random recycling from their driveways into their bins. Might be theirs or might be from someone upwind.

I kind of assumed they wouldn't want their driveways covered in rubbish

It's very windy here too and we've all just laid ours down.

Either way, I wouldn't worry to this extent what your neighbours think.

Delphiniumandlupins · 12/03/2026 12:47

If I was your neighbour I would be grateful you righted my bin and picked up rubbish. I would be very grateful you put recycling into the correct bins. If I knew you had done this I would thank you.

JTRSOP · 12/03/2026 12:49

Sounds fine to me OP - you sound like a very considerate neighbour.

somanychristmaslights · 12/03/2026 12:51

Way over thinking it. Surely the bin collection will be round and empty it soon anyway?

JustAnotherWhinger · 12/03/2026 12:51

Someone in our street did that earlier and I will be buying them a drink at the pub quiz tonight when see them to thank them

Yes same
I hope they do know it was you and say thank you

Parsleyforme · 12/03/2026 13:05

I think you’ve done a kind thing and they will be grateful. I wouldn’t mind at all someone doing this. I might feel a bit embarrassed if it was my recycling all over the road though! We also get this problem on windy days, I’ve tried a bungee cord but it just got torn to shreds when they tipped the bin

randomchap · 12/03/2026 13:14

Thanks

I was over thinking it.

Oh I see, sorry I wasn’t certain from your original post. I think it was a neighbourly thing to do in that case and they’d be pretty churlish to be cross given you were helping keep their drive tidy.

I sympathise with the wind situation - it’s 45mph gusts here, I’ve nearly been blown over a few times today myself!

HoskinsChoice · 12/03/2026 22:51

I do this regularly. Our bin men seem insistent on dropping rubbish down our street every week. I always clear up as I'm passing with the dog and shove it in the nearest bin.

Eenameenadeeka · 13/03/2026 00:52

I think it was very kind of you and surely they will appreciate it, better than leaving the rubbish everywhere surely.

WearyAuldWumman · 13/03/2026 02:24

I did something similar a few weeks ago when a drunk knocked over half the bins in our street. The bins were in the road. I tried to match the rubbish to the bins, but..

In the end, another woman came out and helped. We also had to put a wheel back on one bin.

You did the best you could, @OP.

Tamtim · 13/03/2026 04:48

You did a good deed. I’d be thankful.
