AIBU to be annoyed when people comment on my teen’s acne?

14 yo DD has developed mild acne on her forehead all of a sudden, totally clear in November, started in December and has been getting worse. Bumped into several people in the last week who we haven’t seen for a while and all have said ‘ oh, you’re growing up, teenager now, got the acne etc.’ There’s just no need for that, is there? They’re not wrong but there’s no need to mention it, is there? Why is everything based on looks all the time? 🙈

Wouldn't you love to turn around and say "oh look at you, getting old and with the crows feet and wrinkles to show for it" but nobody should be so rude!

As a now fully grown and mature adult who had some acne issues as a teen. It’s fucking disgusting. Because I also have body dysmorphia from not being perfect (other issues at play but even so, it contributed).

I don’t know why acne is such a free for all dis, when we know better than to cal”someone fat or anything else based upon their appearance,

Ditto calling it ‘bad skin’. So my skin was bad, was it? That word carries so much heft. No wonder I was scarred both physically and psychologically.

Stop judging, people! Acne isn’t because you’re dirty or don’t wash or eat a bad diet when you’re a teen. It just is.

This annoys me so much, even as an adult. Never mind a self conscious teen.

My personal pet peeves:

"Ooh you've got a massive spot!" You don't say!!!! It's not like I haven't fucking seen it on MY OWN FACE.

"You look absolutely shattered". Yes thanks Susan, I fucking well am. And now I know I look like shit too.

When I was a teenager, I walked into my living room and my mam's friend said "ooh you've piled the meat on".

?? What is wrong with people man

My grandmother, who was a great one for personal remarks, peered at me when I was about your daughter’s age and said “Your acne’s getting very noticeable, isn’t it?’

To which my dad replied “So are your bloody wrinkles”.

😆

That sort of thing really does stay with you, doesn't it?

It does. And so does the opposite - I can vividly remember my mum chastising my aunt for repeatedly referring to my acne when I was about 13. I’m 64 now.

She'll get the acne sorted. Unfortunately, those that open mouth before engaging brain are unlikely to improve! I developed acne in my mid 30s and I had a colleague who loved to tell me how bad it looked and on one occasion I answered I already knew but thanks for the reminder - that stopped it.
