I'm sick of oblivious people walking around staring at their phones whilst they've also got headphones in. They can't see, can't hear and aren't even taking part in real life.

What do you think?

I think it's none of your business what others do

Gowlett · 11/03/2026 18:48

I just think it’s dangerous to be out there, unaware of your surroundings. I’ve never used headphones while outside my house. I wouldn’t use my phone on the street, incase it got nicked. I see it happening all the time in my city.

FadedRed · 11/03/2026 18:50

’Phone-Zombies’ annoy me too, and to walk around oblivious of one’s surroundings is not just rude, it’s potentially very dangerous.

JLou08 · 11/03/2026 18:50

I know autistic people who do this, it helps them manage being out in public. Don't be so quick to judge strangers, it's not easy for everyone to 'take part in real life' as you see it.

Dancingsquirrels · 11/03/2026 18:51

My pet hate is people using headphones to hold phone calls as they walk around in public places. Way louder than chatting to a friend in person. Really inconsiderate

It is when they step out into a road or walk into you or don't realise its their turn in a queue. I agree op..people now seem incapable of just being in their own head without the input of an image, reel, podcast or whatever. Love a podcast, but when im cooking, ironing or out in the middle of a country park, not walking along busy streets.

It is annoying if the bump into you or someone else or step out in front of you in the road (I witnessed that recently).

LemonAir · 11/03/2026 19:05

I actively don’t want to take part in real life.
I need to wear earphones to drown out reality.
I’ve never walked into anyone though.

Yes it’s so weird

DonaldJohnTrump · 11/03/2026 19:11

I would add, people with dogs on bigly leads across the sidewalk.

Using headphones isn’t generally a problem, it’s people who are looking down at their phones rather than where they’re going who are.

faerylights · 11/03/2026 19:14

I do this because I don't want to take part in real life. I'm autistic and the real world is incredibly overwhelming for me.

SunnyRedSnail · 11/03/2026 19:17

If I'm on my own I always walk round with headphones in (mid 40s) and have done since I was a teenager. I LOVE music.

I am always aware of my surroundings and not glued to my phone.

As long as a person is aware of their surroundings then I don't see the issue.

But thats the point is it? They aren't so often.

It’s a world of brain-dead zombies out there now. YADNBU.

There's no issue there. I've seen people bumping into each other today it was so weird and in every case they'd got headphones on and were looking down at their phones.

I’d rather they wear headphones than have their videos, news, or whatever playing for all to hear like some guy was doing walking round Asda the other night. If they get walked into it’s their own fault for looking where they’re going, I purposely hold my line and wait for them to realise

Topjoe19 · 11/03/2026 19:26

This is me, I love walking & listening to an audio book. I do keep an eye out over my shoulder though! I don't look at my phone when I'm walking however, I'd probably fall over.

Until they walk into you.

If you are aware of things that are happening around you why would you let them walk into you?
Surely you would move out of the way of them.

MyUnderpants · 11/03/2026 19:58

I'm just sick of things I've seen today. This, then a woman who clearly has drug or/and alcohol issues swearing abuse at a man on a mobility scooter who was also swearing. Going to a pub for a meal and three young blokes sitting on bar stools in front of the bar all talking to the young barmaid, effing and Jeffing every other word.

I'm too young to say society is crap but a lot of it is.

I did move out the way for someone. The pavement is a good 4 metres wide. He still managed to walk into me. Obviously my fault (the look he gave me told me this) for not being a r mind reader and knowing what direction he was going to walk

It is when they bash into you, because they are staring at the phone.

Weird reply. Both people need to be concentrating.
Like you should be on the road too.

HappyCheesy · 11/03/2026 20:06

I hate that it's always my responsibility to avoid them, not the other way aroundd. I have to walk down the pavement dodging the people on their phones or not paying attention because of headphones. Often if Im coming up behind them, but also if they're facing me and using a phone - just oblivious, so I'm back and forth trying to avoid them (it's a very very busy pedestrian and cycle path, so not that easy to go around people all the time) So people who say they've never bumped into anyone - that might be because other people have to constantly go around you!
