To be fed up that it seems to be expected that female celebs dress risqué while men dont

Seeing Chappell roan, Dakota Johnson , Madonna basically showing underwear and parts of the body that should be covered up. All these women are talented and successful. We don’t expect Nicolas cage or mick jagger to strut around showing their Y fronts, so why is this expected of female celebs

OP posts:
Lmnop22 · 09/03/2026 16:28

Not sure it’s expected at all - they’re successful women who choose their own clothes and want to dress that way. They’re not being forced to show parts of their body they don’t want to!

INX · 09/03/2026 16:29

Is there any evidence to show it is expected and that they'd be out of work if they didn't?

Ruggerchick · 09/03/2026 17:28

Their body, their choice

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/03/2026 17:34

It gets them attention, which is what they crave. Nobody makes them do it. Sex sells. Always has, always will.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/03/2026 17:36

I'm happy to expect Jason Mamoa and Chris Hemsworth to walk around in just their pants. But only if they want to. Just like the ladies cab choose what to wear.

UnilateralDecisions · 09/03/2026 17:36

I agree with you OP, it’s such a bore.

People can say they chose their own clothes or whatever, but none of that was done in a vacuum. Hate the game not the player though.

HeddaGarbled · 09/03/2026 17:37

Agreed. It’s like a race to the bottom (pun intended).

YerMotherWasAHamster · 09/03/2026 17:37

I agree. It is interesting and I don't know why its seen as wrong to wonder about it.
Why don't men typicaly go round in revealing clothing since its all about empowerment, body positivity and so on.
They're clearly missing out.

Mischance · 09/03/2026 17:39

I think they are daft to dress that way and to capitulate to the trend - but their body, their choice.

Mostly they look perfectly ridiculous.

Notmyreality · 09/03/2026 17:40

Expected by whom? Themselves? They chose to do it as they want to be seen as “young, hot and sexy”.
You do understand that females making themselves look attractive for male attention is a basic trait in the animal kingdom? Humans are no different and no more advanced than the rest of the animal kingdom in that regard.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 09/03/2026 17:40

Why is it wrong for women to dress how they want to dress? Whether that involves showing themselves off or covering up, why has there always got to be women trying to bring down other women? Wear what you want to wear, and leave other women to it.

Actually, generally it's the males in the animal kingdom who have the more extreme appearance.

Bitnosy · 09/03/2026 17:45

@YerMotherWasAHamster because women aren't visual? Women are more interested in what a person's attributes are other than physical I think, plus it garner attention, sexual attractiveness is still deemed very worthy and powerful, and for a woman that equates to being young and fertile, dressing up in underwear says young and sexy, don't tell Madonna though.

KimberleyClark · 09/03/2026 17:48

FruAashild · 09/03/2026 17:42

And it’s usually the males who compete and display for the females, rather than the other way around.

EmbroideredGardener · 09/03/2026 17:48

While it is ultimately their choice, they are influenced by societal expectations, the boundaries pushed by those before them, and the designers who have quite a lot of say for certain events etc.

But I agree with @YerMotherWasAHamster if it is all about empowerment, why dont male artists walk the red carpet with their balls precariously balanced inside a lace, see through cup, two sizes too small, because sex sells...

In the animal kingdom isn't it normally the male of the species that does the peacocking to attract a mate 🤔

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 09/03/2026 17:49

It will keep happening until successful women say no.

Same.

I don’t expect it but I’d love it if some of the men turned up with their bodies on show! Yummy.

AnAppleAWeek · 09/03/2026 17:51

Not all of us need to see male celebrities in their pants.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 09/03/2026 18:01

I'd rather not see anyone in their pants tbh, I just hate all the bollocks about how women going round half dressed is great, positive, personal choice that is in no way exploitative.

SlipperyLizard · 09/03/2026 18:05

I saw Wolf Alice recently and the difference between the female lead singer (body suit, tights, knee high boots) and the male band members (jeans and t shirts) really struck me.

She looked amazing, don’t get me wrong, but I much preferred the vibe at Of monsters and men, where everyone looked comfortably dressed!

HeddaGarbled · 09/03/2026 19:08

There was an interview with Corinne Bailey Rae in the Guardian at the weekend and she said she was labelled ‘middle of the road’ because she wasn’t “tits out for the lads”.

Pamela Anderson is bucking the trend.

Ha ha please no (the balls in a lace cup). Now I've got that Mandelson picture stuck in my head..

Pamela Anderson is bucking the trend.

Maybe now. That was not the case years ago.

ThatPearlkitty · 09/03/2026 19:20
