To be fed up that it seems to be expected that female celebs dress risqué while men dont

Seeing Chappell roan, Dakota Johnson , Madonna basically showing underwear and parts of the body that should be covered up. All these women are talented and successful. We don’t expect Nicolas cage or mick jagger to strut around showing their Y fronts, so why is this expected of female celebs

These women parade around nearly naked to up their public profile, keeping their names and photos very clearly on the front pages. Otherwise tge alternative for them is to slip into obscurity and they fear that the most. So yes, you are being unreasonable inbthe respect that you think it’s expected. It’s not. It’s they themselves driving it, their vanity wouldn’t allow anything else.

I'd rather not see anyone in their pants tbh, I just hate all the bollocks about how women going round half dressed is great, positive, personal choice that is in no way exploitative.

Agree. The double think on this is off the scale. Empowerment my arse! The underlying message is that unless you have got your legs on show up to your pants, and your boobs out, you aren't worth looking at, regardless of how talented you are at singing or acting.

It's a crap message to pass on to younger women and just puts even more pressure on them to look perfect.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 09/03/2026 19:54

It’s naive to sell it as purely female empowerment. It’s no secret that female musicians, actors etc are pressured to use their looks to market their work.

It’s interesting that some of the female actors who are often dressed without acres of flesh/underwear on show are some of the most successful. Success has bought them leverage in choosing how they dress.

Riapia · 09/03/2026 20:11

Can it be that men are fascinated by women’s bodies. Men’s bodies don’t have the same appeal to women.

PollyBell · 09/03/2026 20:13

The could actually wear what they want? A novel idea bit maybe they do and dont need other people to speak for them like they are not in the room

Pamela Anderson is bucking the trend.

SpottyAlpaca · 09/03/2026 20:18

These women are highly successful multi millionaire entertainers. If they choose to compete for media coverage by going out in their knickers that’s up to them. Their career, their choice. I will give them enough credit to assume they are perfectly capable of deciding for themselves what they wear. I find it very hard to believe that anyone is dictating Madonna’s clothing choices to her.

UnilateralDecisions · 09/03/2026 20:19

It’s somewhat convenient that the ‘female empowerment’ look overlaps with what men would like to look at…

Yes, indeed. But it's true - dresses like a maiden aunt and refuses to wear make-up. (IRL, not in her film roles, obvs.)

Let's all ignore 95% of her body is plastic

Annoys me no end that as a woman, apparently being "empowered" means wear as little as possible 🙄

And the women who offer it as their reason for doing so are absolutely full of BS. You want the attention, just be honest.

Why do men never have to be half naked to be "empowered"?!

A friend of mine used to comment on this line of thinking when Burlesque was quite in, once again getting naked was being touted as beneficial and empowering and really feminist. Something like "quick let me take these freedom limiting, empowerment blocking clothes off"

Screamingabdabz · 09/03/2026 20:38

You are not being unreasonable. Sex sells and its patriarchal power that largely owns the means of production and distribution. They have to prove they have sex appeal to even get a foot in the door let alone a contract. Some like Madonna are so entrenched they wouldn’t be able to break out now if they tried.

As talented as he is, that’s why I’m annoyed every time I see Lewis Capaldi. If he was a woman he would’ve been laughed out of the room no sooner had he picked up the guitar. Even Susan Boyle was expected to scrub up. But ol’ Lewis can just rock up on stage like some overweight gamer with pot noodle down the t shirt he slept in and that’s fine and dandy because he sings like an angel. Why doesn’t that work for the female artists then? Sexism that’s why.

YorkStories · 09/03/2026 20:38

I don’t think they are pressurised to dress like that. I think they want to. The women celebs that do this generally have amazing bodies and when they wear revealing clothes they get attention which helps them stay in the public eye. Revealing clothing can look very tacky. It’s not empowering. That’s rubbish.

Of course they’re not pressurised. That’s not how power works. It’s just so culturally embedded that women will be half naked. Female artists know that’s the deal in the industry and so they maximise their assets to get ahead in their career. It’s still not right.

Yep! Bloody depressing and it's getting worse.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 09/03/2026 21:02

A couple of years ago, some celeb was naked on the red carpet. The dress was totally sheer. Her escort was next to her in his black tie etc.

I'm sick of the sexism.

Linoleum81 · 09/03/2026 22:10

Notmyreality · 09/03/2026 17:40

Expected by whom? Themselves? They chose to do it as they want to be seen as “young, hot and sexy”.
You do understand that females making themselves look attractive for male attention is a basic trait in the animal kingdom? Humans are no different and no more advanced than the rest of the animal kingdom in that regard.

These women are already super attractive
fully dressed.

Makes me mad all these women going on about “her choice”. I’ll believe it’s a women’s choice when I see men prancing about in butt cheek cut offs. Women dress like this because after a century of “liberation” they are still judged first and foremost on how they look TO MEN and all you “dress choices” just follow along bleating like sheep.

HoskinsChoice · 09/03/2026 22:55

It is 100% a woman's choice how she dresses. Nobody expects it and even if they did, its still 100% a woman's choice.

I hate it. Women have fought for so long for equality and now it seems we're going backwards with women flaunting their bodies for attention. It feels like one step forward, two steps back but it's actually women who are driving this regression rather than men.

That was Bianca Censori. I am not sure she wasn't coerced by her partner. I agree, it's not female empowerment, it's sexism and it's setting an awful example for the younger generation.

Exactly. It's an awful example to set for the younger generation. Where are the great leaps forward that we have supposedly made in sexism and equality? Nowhere.

MarthaBeach · 09/03/2026 23:22

I agree. Decades ago I had an argument with a friend about Madonna always emphasising the sexy image, my friend was saying she's empowering herself, and I replied that if sex is such a fundamental part of her image and sense of herself, then who is she going to be when she's 60? (I never dreamt she would end up like a character from the movie Brazil)

And in a far less extreme sense, I always notice on chat shows, panel shows etc, how the men are fully covered up in comfortable clothes and most women are exposing far more flesh. Why?

Can you imagine a TV chat show with all the women in loose trousers, shirts and jackets, and all the men in vest tops and tight jeans or shorts? It's unthinkable.

I love it when you have someone like Julia Roberts on a chat show, looking elegant and chic, not try-hard sexy. Or Emma Thompson just being herself.

Someone mentioned Wolf Alice, and I was actually disappointed when I saw the singer on the Brits - I had liked what I heard on the radio, and expected her to be more edgy and punk, not sex kitten.

FrippEnos · 09/03/2026 23:36

Aren't these clothes worn for free as the designers ask the celebs to wear them?
Or am I thinking of another celeb event?
