Hate sharing hotel rooms (except with dh)

I am travelling at the minute and ended up leaving the room I was sharing with two female friends last night and paying for my own room. It was the best money I ever spent and I am never sharing a hotel room with anyone other than dh and dcs again.

The issues were a bit of snoring, (which I sometimes do myself tbh, and it wasn't loud so not a big problem), people being messy, leaving worn socks on the table right next to the kettle etc, but the worst thing was one woman having catnaps at dinner time then being awake half the night browsing her phone. Ugh, the light flashing past my face waking me up was so annoying. If you can't sleep, I suppose that's difficult but maybe cut out the pre bedtime snoozes?

Anyway, that is my rant.

Aibu to say that sharing hotel rooms is horrible and to really resent paying for a bad night's sleep?

I'm not sure I could even be friends with someone who leaves their used socks next to the kettle! How old is this woman?!

Strawberryfruitstarburst · 09/03/2026 09:45

I will only share a hotel room with my partner and child. I won’t even share with my own mum! I need personal space.

Iocanepowder · 09/03/2026 09:49

We are all different.

i am happy to share a room with my friends. My sleep doesn’t get disrupted but mostly, we all live a few hours apart so paying for a room each would make it unaffordable to meet more regularly.

BauhausOfEliott · 09/03/2026 09:54

I’d rather stick my head into a mincer than share a room with anyone except my partner.

WalkDontWalk · 09/03/2026 09:56

Nah. I'd rather sleep in the car.

mustwashmycurtains · 09/03/2026 10:00

i think sharing a room with a good friend is fun. But then I’m both a good sleeper and happy to make it clear re my rules on keeping the room tidy 😆 Especially would do it if it means we can then afford a nicer hotel by sharing. Also - always have earplugs in your toiletries bag!

100% agree! Came out of a long-term relationship last year and even that was a struggle. Other people snoring makes me want to batter them because even with ear plugs and white noise I can still hear the snoring.

I can just about share with DD, but only for a very short time as her chaotic mess gets to me after a while and DS is like an old squeeze box. He wheezes and whistles and snuffles away and then starts up a conversation while he's asleep. Definitely battering territory!!!! When we go away together, he has to be in a separate room.

CactusSwoonedEnding · 09/03/2026 10:05

Yanbu at all. Sharing a hotel room is only something I used to do when it was the only way to afford something and I had too much fomo to pass on things I couldn't really afford. Nowadays I will happily pay for a single room if I can afford it or will stay at home otherwise.

climbintheback · 09/03/2026 10:05

I shared a room with my sister recently - ear plugs and nytol worked a treat.

PopcornKitten · 09/03/2026 16:50

Two adult couples sharing a room just makes me want to throw up. I just assumed they were super big beds in a twin room!

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 09/03/2026 17:03

Nope, never. Even with my sister on a cruise.

JohnTheRevelator · 09/03/2026 17:12

I hate sharing a hotel room. The only people I have ever shared with have been my ex husband (when we were still together obviously!) and my DD when she was much younger. I like my own space and I'm quite a private person. I'm also a very light sleeper and any snoring is guaranteed to keep me awake. I also like being able to use the bathroom as and when I want, can't be doing with waiting around for someone else to finish in there! A good friend of mine wants us to go on holiday together later this year, and says 'It will be fun' to share a room. I said it's not happening 😂

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/03/2026 17:25

I don’t share hotel rooms either. Except with the kids, and that not often.

Its the opposite of what being away should be about - it should be relaxing and more restful than being at home.

I mean it’s up to your friend if she enjoys a catnap but she should realise she can’t be up on her phone all night when sharing. She ought to have realised that sharing a room wouldn’t work!

MissCooCooMcgoo · 09/03/2026 17:30

Own room always! I want to have my own space and be able to take a shower and slob about naked watching TV if I want.

Can't do that sharing

I’m going to a conference down in Oxford for a few days next month and DH suggested I stay in a hostel to save money! I would rather spoon my eyes out. Cannot imagine anything worse than not only sharing a bathroom with lots of strangers but also a bedroom. Even in a female only dorm I’d be terrified someone would rob me in my sleep. DH thought I was insane but there’s just no way I’d be able to sleep.

Also, there are plenty of not-too-expensive hotels in Oxford, or there's AirBnB. No need for a hostel. Ever!

wendywoopywoo222 · 09/03/2026 18:02

I love sharing when I’m away with freinds. Reminds me of trips away when we were young and we usually stay up half the night chatting.

rookiemere · 09/03/2026 18:04

Further to my comment about US couples sharing rooms, my US cousin told me about a trip to Vegas where there were three friends in one bed to save money and she was in the middle! I can’t imagine anything worse and it’s also slightly bemusing as I think US salaries are better than here and hotel rooms generally not that expensive.

I am so glad to read this! I was starting to think I'm a complete weirdo for being happy to share a room with friends. I go on holiday semi often with two different friends, one I've know more than 45 years, the other for more than 30 years. I happily share a twin room with each of them. I wouldn't occur to me or to either of them to suggest separate rooms.

I have been on one and two week holidays with them, which I guess is the length of holiday many people would mainly do with their DH or partner, so perhaps that has meant I've had plenty of time to get completely comfortable with sharing rooms with them? I've also only had my first partner relatively late in life so haven't got used to only or mainly going away with or sharing a room with him.

It's a personal choice, but I'm pro sharing. Hotel rooms are so expensive for what they are I'm not just going to drop an extra couple of hundred pounds. And it's nice to hang out and chat. Short term only; I'm happy to get home to my own bed and room, but that's an extra pleasure to look forward to!

I prefer to go to a cheaper hotel than share to be honest. OTOH I wouldn't be that bothered about a tiny bit of light from a phone or a kindle - you never have complete darkness in cities anyway.

BiscoffCheesecakes · 09/03/2026 18:28

I don't even share with my dd! Last time we shared she accused me of breathing 🤣. If I ever go away with OH it's an Airbnb style accommodation as he stays up later than me

springawakeningss · 09/03/2026 18:29

I just book my own room

silentnight000 · 09/03/2026 19:24

No way, I do not share hotel rooms with anyone other than DH or my children.

I’m missing a group weekend away this year because the organiser thought it’d be fun to book somewhere where it’s 2/3 to a room. No thank you I would rather stay at home!!

That only works if you are a good sleeper. If you have a hint of insomnia it's shit.

What this is a thing!? We went to the USA recently and all the rooms we stayed in were like this, but I just thought they had nicer family rooms than here (where the second bed is a crappy sofa bed), although I am baffled why hotels think kids want to share a bed. My teenage son refused to share with his sister so I ended up with her and him with DH.
