I'm at a Rugby match go tigers and am whistling - proper fingers in moth for volume and passion at appropriate moments.

I'm so commited to the cause I took my invisalign out 🤣

There's 2 men in front of me have tutted and said that it's unladylike.

Wibu to tell them to eff off if they mutter again?

Good God who even uses the phrase "ladylike" in these days?

I would disregard the opinion or advice of anyone who presumed to tell me my behaviour was ladylike or unladylike. Anyone offering this unsolicited view is a) a misogynistic twat and b) out of the middle of the 20ths century, so why would you waste any time worrying about their views?

NoSoupForU · 08/03/2026 17:33

It isn't ladylike.

But why do you need to be ladylike?

AgnesMcDoo · 08/03/2026 17:35

it’s rugby, not afternoon tea at the Ritz.

tell them to fuck off

Keep whistling for me! I couldn’t get there today but watching the second half and cheering Tigers on!

Ahha lads are doing brilliantly.

It's great to see the youngsters here with full matches!

Maybe it's a polite way of telling you that you're being really annoying?

Telling a woman she should be ladylike is not polite, it's misogyny disguised as politeness

Well if so they should just tell the OP she is being annoying, rather than defaulting to a misogynistic and patronising phrase used to put women back in their boxes.

Anyway I'd be prepared to bet a lot of money they wouldn't call out a man for whistling.

Is misogyny ever polite?

They've said nothing to the man with the air horn.

But maybe he's got the correct genitals for Loud?

Maybe they're confused as to why you're chatting on MN when you're supposed to be enjoying a rugby match so much?

Bizarre thing to do.

FreshInks · 08/03/2026 17:27

I can't believe you're suggesting that it is okay for men to tell women that they need to behave in a 'ladylike' manner

She's not. Hth

"A whistling woman and a crowing hen, are neither fit for God nor men" 😆

They're in front of me. They can't see me multitasking. No confusion possible.

They've been showing each other photos of their news cars. A BYD actually. I can see their screens I'm behind them.

There's loads of pauses in rugby, don't you know?

When men behave like gentlemen you woll
consider behaving like a lady

although since you are a lady it’s clearly ladylike

curtaintwitcher78 · 08/03/2026 17:45

You should have shouted "Come on, Dover! Move yer bleedin' aaarse!" and asked them if that was ladylike enough.
I'm a fantastic whistler. I'm proud of it. Fuck everyone who thinks you aren't allowed to enjoy yourself or express yourself. Finger whistling is something not everyone can master. Hope you had a wonderful time x

People on Mumsnet often seem to have weird hang-ups about whistling in general though. I've read loads of people on the "what things do you hate?" threads cite whistling.

I can't see why it would bother anyone. Maybe at the ballet, but not a rugby match.

mondaytosunday · 08/03/2026 17:46

Whistling can be pretty ear piercing. I wouldn’t want anyone whistling right behind me. It may not be ‘ladylike’ But it’s not ‘gentlemen like’ either.

Well, whistling irritates me full stop, no matter what the context, volume or sex of the whistler is.

BauhausOfEliott · 08/03/2026 17:48

This is why I prefer football.

itsthetea · 08/03/2026 17:50

Well I dislike whistling intensely - it’s like fingers in a blackboard

but that feeling is independent of the sex of the whistling person

Because they don’t whistle or because the guys keep their gobs shut ? Or?

ThereIsAHoleInMySoul · 08/03/2026 17:53

Well an absolute drubbing.

Off to the hotel to drink pints of Guinness.

But never fear, I'll hold my finger at an angle of daint.

Yes some folk much prefer copious racist chanting to a whistle.

I mean they’re not wrong - it’s not particularly ladylike to take out your braces, plonk fingers in your mouth to hoot and holler at sportsmen! 😂

It depends whether you care and are trying to be ladylike? If not, go ahead and keep whistling or making whatever sporty sounds you want to make!

‘Ladylike’
Jesus. We still need International Women’s Day, the message hasn’t sunk in yet
