AIBU worrying about WW3?

My husband says I’m putting too much energy into something that may never happen. I’m worried that UK will have a nuclear attack… my husband also says ‘the weren’t even used in the Cold War, they are mainly just a deterrent’

I can’t stop thinking about it, and I’m seeing tabloids like Mirror, Daily Star, The Sun.. report like ‘4 minute warning’ and everything- to the point I’ve had to delete Facebook.

ive even asked ChatGPT who says it’s ’extremely unlikely’ 😆

but I just can’t shake it, I suffer with anxiety that I am being seen for.

The Mirror 😁

Dont worry OP, if the nukes start flying we’re all dead. Be more worried about the cost of living that is more likely to explode along with petrol prices.

Back in the 80s before the internet I bought a newspaper everyday. Then it was full of Sadam Hussain and weapons of mass destruction, and threats of nuclear war. In the end I was paralyzed with fear. I was a wreck.

I managed to tell a manager at work how scared I was. She basically said, there is no point worrying about things you have no control of. You could get to 80 years old and you'll wonder why you worried so much.

And she was right. It's now 2026 and I'm now 62. Live your live OP.

I have had a bit of a stockpile for most of my adult life. I was always scared of nuclear war after watching threads !

Pantry is well stocked and items used and replaced in rotation so nothing has ever gone to waste . I have made sure I also have enough so that in the event of anything I can also help neighbours or anyone locally

Sorry, but utter waste of time. If there was a nuclear war, the moment your neighbours realised you had stock piled tins, you wouldn't be given the chance to 'help them'. You would just be swiftly murdered so they could take all your hoardered tins.

Have you actually met the human race?

A tin of Condensed Milk inside a football sock would be pretty effective in warding off looters. Unless they've got a hairspray and clipper lighter flamethrower or something, then you might have to break out the extension cord with the sharpened plug on the end.

I want you on my team in the aftermath of a nuclear war!

@mumstheword1x You do realise we and the rest of the west have tech to detect and deflect nukes? One would be fired right back. Hence why they don’t do it. It would be the end of them as well.

our uk papers make it seem like we are enemy number one to get people riled up. News is supposed to be dramatic. OP there will be another you in France seeing the French headlines today about the same thing geared towards France. You do get that?

Ancasta · 09/03/2026 11:19

Nukes are ironically what deter a world war from happening. What we are living through now imo (and will be for some time so we have to get used to it!) is another Cold War. Cold wars have hot spots. Ukraine and Iran are two of these. Taiwan, if it happens, will be another. The last Cold War was about ideology, this one is about control over strategic choke points / trading routes etc. it’s china with Russia vs the US and us-led west. It’s supply chains to worry about rather than nukes.

I was like you in 2022 and made myself ill with worry, mainly about my children. I have to research like a beast now to be able to cope (reputable sources and deffo not the mirror!). There are some other comforting overviews I can send you that I found useful when I was in the pit of it - feel free to DM me.

Considering the OP reads The Daily Star, I suspect that her understanding of international politics is tenuous at best.

StephensLass1977 · 09/03/2026 11:27

I actually don't have any social media. I just read this forum and then just use the internet for banking, clothes and grocery shopping, tips on dog training, etc.

My sister has that BBC news alert which makes such a loud noise and flashes up on her screen anytime there's any sort of news story. It's ridiculous. I don't know how she lives like that. She always seems stressed about what's going on.

My partner sends me screenshots of news stories and says 'can you believe what's happened there??' and honestly, while I care to some extent, I just can't get excited about it, and I can't imagine the mentality of people who rush to post their every thought on Twitter. It must be so stressful to live like that!

I think it's wise to have awareness and empathy, but to get minute by minute updates, no chance.

Verv · 09/03/2026 11:32

UniquePinkSwan · 08/03/2026 15:21

This is why I don’t watch the news. I couldn’t live like this. My mental health is superb

Absolutely same.
I ended my relationship with TV news consumption during Covid and am comfortable with the decision as my stress levels seem to be so much lower than those who are glued to it.
I still have news subscriptions to a couple of online papers - but only dip in and out of news im interested in and do the puzzles.

CustardySergeant · 09/03/2026 11:34

JTRSOP · 08/03/2026 15:24

Your DH is right. Nuclear weapons are the ultimate deterrent. They’re not meant to be for attack.

Russia would have defeated Ukraine by now if they wanted to use a nuclear weapon.

Why do you think they haven’t?

Don't you think the close proximity of Ukraine to Russia might have something to do with it? Nuclear fallout doesn't respect borders.

100% agree. Same applies to toilet roll, people wouldn't even think of packing toilet roll in their backpack if we had to run.

Dozens of comments in, why are you continuing to get your information from the tawdriest, muck dredging tabloids? Have you actually read any of the posts on here?

NobodysChildNow · 09/03/2026 14:03

If you are worried then why not do something that feels productive to address your worries? Join Green Peace or CND for example.

I watched a programme about dinosaur evolution the other day. Life will go on, most likely, even if it evolves very differently without humans. Your life is less than a blink of an eye - don’t waste it worrying.

mumstheword1x · 09/03/2026 20:45

See I don’t understand, how and why they’d make this up. It’s like I can’t socialise. It’s now everywhere on my algorithms

Vladimir Putin held a phone call with Donald Trump earlier today and shared his proposals, aimed at a quick settlement to the Iran war, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov has told reporters.

“I’ll say right away that the conversation was businesslike, frank, and constructive, as is usually the case in dialogue between Russian and American leaders,” Ushakov said of the hour-long call, the first between the Russian and US presidents this year.

“The Russian president expressed a number of considerations aimed at a speedy political and diplomatic resolution of the Iranian conflict,” he said.

So, shockingly, I think the Star is telling pork pies. Hard to believe, I know.

For fucks's sake. Press the 3 little dots at the top right and pick an option. "not interested" is a good one.

Here. On the off chance you're not on the windup.
