AIBU worrying about WW3?

My husband says I’m putting too much energy into something that may never happen. I’m worried that UK will have a nuclear attack… my husband also says ‘the weren’t even used in the Cold War, they are mainly just a deterrent’

I can’t stop thinking about it, and I’m seeing tabloids like Mirror, Daily Star, The Sun.. report like ‘4 minute warning’ and everything- to the point I’ve had to delete Facebook.

ive even asked ChatGPT who says it’s ’extremely unlikely’ 😆

but I just can’t shake it, I suffer with anxiety that I am being seen for.

It depends how far you are from a blast really. It may not mean survival but could make a difference in some ways

I think I'd rather die instantly than sit miserably in my house eating cold, tinned food until it ran out and I starved to death 😂

I’m planning to survive on uht milk and angel delight to be honest as UPFs won’t matter so much although I do have an impressive range of tinned goods as well.

youalright · 08/03/2026 18:19

Can you remember a few momths back when the papers where saying exactly the same would happen when Russia and Ukraine where fighting and all the mumsnet post saying my kid won't be going to war and look did Russia bomb us no. If you looked back over the last year of any newspaper headline I would imagine a good 90% of what they reported never happened

Ummm now I want angel delight. Butterscotch angel delight 😋

XenoBitch · 08/03/2026 18:20

Your main issues is listening to the tabloids. They pump out absolute shite!

Block/ignore them, and your life will be better.

Definitely thats a plan. Il Bring wine

Dribblepop · 08/03/2026 18:23

I think you’re putting too much energy into something you have absolutely no control over. And if World War 3 happens, it happens - we just press on and do the best we can. No point in fretting about it.

As long as it pairs well with the angel delight !!! 😂

One thing I def won’t be indulging in is any of the cuisine mentioned in ‘children of the dust’ (that book traumatised me! And I don’t really fancy dog biscuits !)

Kalimero · 08/03/2026 18:26

I switched off my TV in the 90s, stopped reading newspapers headlines beginning of 2000s.

I advise you to do the same.

Bringemout · 08/03/2026 16:02

Honestly, it’s extremely unlikely, I wouldn’t worry. Why nukes specifically? Thats the one thing I’m absolutely not worried about.

That little teapot in North Korea is somebody to aware of, but we can't do owt about it!

I just see a lot of things about Russia with where I am looking.

Ok, so.

Why would the Kremlin do so? What would be the strategic rationale? There are protocols in place, so, let’s say they fired a single warhead at Westminster in an attempt to simply decapitate the UK government, we have one ballistic missile sub at sea at any one time - they have orders, held within their safe, with clear instructions as to what they are to do in the event of circumstances detailed above. These subs supposedly carry 8 ballistic missiles, each with 8 warheads, of a yield of ~100kt.

Moscow would therefore cease to exist, to all intents/purposes.

An application of logic might help calm your nerves.

letsgotothebeach · 08/03/2026 18:36

With regards to nuclear bombs, when people say it’ll be quick and we’ll all go together I do not agree - we will probably all go eventually but there would be huge suffering for many in the process. Also it’s very easy to say don’t worry about what you can’t change….something that could potentially be the end of civilisation is something that I do worry about occasionally when the threat of world war 3 keeps being rolled out again. I do agree social media doesn’t help, particularly with AI now. If you have to use it, try and block Mirror/Express/ Mail and their ridiculous scaremongering. I also agree with the poster who said that it’s actually important to watch the suffering in the world and what is happening to Iranians now. Not to block it out and live in ignorance. So it’s hard to balance the wanting to know what is happening to others less fortunate than us in the world, and not get bogged down with the potential “what ifs”.

CountryMouse22 · 08/03/2026 18:36

With great foresight, DH ordered oil for the tank within an hour of hearing about the Trump/Iran debacle, it has now nearly doubled in price. Well done DH!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 08/03/2026 18:37

I'm not at all worried about a nuclear attack on the UK, I am however concerned about fuel and energy shortages and I am worried about inflation rising sharply as a result as I think that takes us a step closer to civil unrest.

Babybirdmum · 08/03/2026 18:37

Honestly if you’re anxious social media is really bad for you. I deactivated mine so I can get photos back if needed but I’m not needlessly scrolling. It’s all full of fake news and conspiracies now anyway, if I want to find out what’s going on I’ll read the actual news. Practically the best thing you can do at the minute is get your spending habits in check as bill will rise, so just focus on that if it makes you feel like you’re getting prepared for the worst.

whereisitnow · 08/03/2026 18:39

The best thing we can do for ourselves is to stay well clear of the US/Israel war on Iran.

MaIeficent · 08/03/2026 18:44

I think I'd only be worried if nukes got into the hands of fundamental
Islamists tbh.

whereisitnow · 08/03/2026 18:39

Why is that?

YerMotherWasAHamster · 08/03/2026 18:55

When im worried about something the first thing I ask myself is can I do anything about this.
If i can, I do. If I can't then I just keep reminding myself I can't let things i cant control rule my life.

So look at your fears, identify what if anything you can do, and do that.

MrsVBS · 08/03/2026 18:57

I completely understand you worrying, I’m a worrier myself. My husband always says unless it’s something I can change worrying is wasted energy as there’s nothing I can do about it. Limit your news time and remember all the headlines on Sky or in the papers as for clickbait, think of all the times they’ve sensationalised something that has never happened. Do nice things, avoid the news and try not to worry (I know that’s easier said than done)!

misssunshine4040 · 08/03/2026 19:00

Please try to remember that we are still at a peaceful time of civilisation compared to the past.

We are not entering WW3 nor does it seem imminent - what would the reason be for all out war?

The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest we have come to nuclear war and lessons were learned to prevent this happening again- the hotlines installed for example to allow leaders instant communication to de escalate and avoid miscommunication as total destruction benefits no one.

The media need to make money and they profit from fear mongering - we are very lucky to live in the UK where can feel safe

Bigwelshlamb · 08/03/2026 19:00

I think it is entirely reasonable to be worried... You have an orange know nothing madman who is drunk on power who does not even understand the consequences of what he's done... The entire Middle East has been drawn in too.. lots of reasons to worry... I also have three young men in my home who would be prime candidates for being called up so they have EU passports and I will remove them if anything goes amiss. Whoever thinks this isn't likely to kick off globally, isn't paying attention. This is the closest we've been to a world war in our lifetimes so I am not ignoring it... That said, I've taken a promotion at work and am carrying on as normal but I also have money elsewhere just in case. I paid £75 for half a tank of diesel today... This is real and it is happening so I think it is best to hope for the worst and gently prepare for the worst.

Nutmuncher · 08/03/2026 19:01

Don’t fear nuclear weapons, should you be caught up in that then it’s RIP fairly instantly. Unless obviously you survive and then you need to deal with radioactive mutants but anyway…

The thing that should be front of everyone’s minds right now is terrorism linked to current Middle East situation so be super aware of your surroundings, also the fallout of supply chain problems / inflationary impacts on food, fuel, energy etc due to shipping issues.
