I’ve never known anyone track their periods

I had thyroid cancer 6 years ago. Had half of it removed. Then I had the Covid jab and had a severe hemorrhagic bleed as a side effect. I ended up in hospital and on tablets to stol the bleeding afterwards.

I have ended up in early peri menopause as a combined effort from both. It’s bloody awful but mid month, I get severe ovulation pain and I know it’s that mainly from tracking my symptoms on my Garmin watch, I know my pain is from my body attempting ovulation, and end of the month I get a vague 12-24 hour period. I barely bleed anymore. I mainly use pantyliners now as there is no need for anything else

DP said it’s ‘weird’ that I am tracking my symptoms with my body and Garmin calendar. Does anyone else do this or am I indeed a bit weird?

So did he actually said : I’ve never known anyone track their periods.
because if my DH said this I would be 🤔

I've tracked mine for years. Since having my smart watch I've noticed my heart rate increases mid cycle and the falls just before my period is due. It's very useful to be able to predict when I'm going come on as I'm quite irregular.

But the Mirena is localised progestin. Very different from taking HRT.

Honestly - I’m not up for the risk of anything hormonal. Ive done the pill and the copper coil. Neither worked other than the contraceptive side. I take every supplement I can - collagen, berocca, iron, peri menopause natural supplement, B vitamins, magnesium. I’m trying. The pain is shit but I think I possibly might have a fibroid or something normal along those lines and awaiting a scan. Nothing sinister - bloods all good

My periods used to be pretty regular so I knew when in the month to expect them without needing to physically track them anywhere. Now that they’re irregular, I still don’t see the benefit of tracking as they don’t come when I’m expecting them to. I’ve tried to a few times in the past, but I don’t really stick to it.

Obviously enough people do it to justify apps for that specific purpose though.

pokemoan · 07/03/2026 21:53

I’ve tracked via an app for the last 15 years, didn’t track before then as i don’t use a diary much.

I don’t note symptoms but wanted to know when it’s due. I’m 99% regular to the dot so know my symptoms

I know the date of when mine is due and that's about it really. Does this class as tracking?
I agree a lot of women I've ever spoken to about the subject track some way or another.

PurpleThistle7 · 07/03/2026 21:54

Does your partner menstruate? Because if they do they’d know it’s a bizarre thing to say. If they don’t they can back the F up and leave us to our business.

I’ve tracked for decades.

Troop · 07/03/2026 21:54

He doesn't have to track his if he doesn't want to. Otherwise I really don't see why he has a opinion on it.

AfraidToRun · 07/03/2026 21:56

I track so I know that when I feel I've been lobotomized or I'm afraid of my own shadow, it's a temporary hormone war and not full on breakdown...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/03/2026 21:56

It’s one of my favourite features of the Garmin app. You can now add lifestyle features (that you select yourself) and it maps them against your other data- so if like me you get rolling palpitations and extreme anxiety in the week before your period, you can track it and get decent data to take with you to the gp rather than a vague list of symptoms that they can write off as generalised womanhood

Thing is I’ve always been fairly regular. I am now ish. Odd month I miss or I’m late. I bleed for - I’m not kidding - around 12-24 hours max. But I still track them with being kicked into peri. And yes I’ve seen gynaecologists about it who confirmed the same. Hard work being female. Thank you - men are clearly just idiots

MaggieBsBoat · 07/03/2026 21:57

I assumed your DP is a woman, but no. Just an idiotic man with a f@cking opinion.

I’ve never known a woman to not track her periods!

He sounds like one of those fools who thinks every woman he’s ever slept with has had an orgasm with him. And is confident about it. Idiot.

Tracking is absolutely normal but discussing it with other males (apart from your partner) is not.
So I would be very interested to know about all these women with whom your DP discussed their not tracking periods.

DontbesorrybeGiles · 07/03/2026 21:57

Why can’t you have the mirena because of previous depression? I have had several major depressive episodes and don’t remember this even being discussed or mentioned in passing when I had my mirena.

youalright · 07/03/2026 21:57

Ewww men. They really have no idea do they.

Same - I love it!! Amazing that they have tailored it to women

First of all, I'm so sorry for what you have been through.

I track mine each month. My cycle really impacts my moods and it helps me to know where I am at hormonally, I also get the ovulation pain.

What a luxury it is for your DP to be so ignorant to the impact of a menstrual cycle that he thinks it's weird to track it.

wish id tracked mine a bit more closely

I went into psychosis in perimenopause

befroe than ahd no problems with periods or moods - my DH never knew he was born!

all that changed when I ahd this catastrophic psychosis

They mentioned copper coil would be better for me. I tried it and it didn’t work - mainly pain related. Then I started HRT and that also didn’t agree. We are all different though so I suppose doctors all have their own recommendations. Mentally though I’m really good - I make a daily effort to be as positive as I can be

Bless you. Hormones are just horrendous aren’t they. Are you feeling better now?

I was under the impression most women track their periods to some extent. Otherwise how would you know when you're late/possibly pregnant, going to be on your period while you're on holiday etc., not to even mention potential health problems. I've often been asked by health professionals when the date of my last period was; it's the first thing you're asked when you find out you're pregnant, so they know how far along you are. I haven't always been scrupulous with tracking, but I have always been made to feel I was a bit odd/negligent for not doing so!

Rosecoffeecup · 07/03/2026 22:02

Tracked mine for 7 or 8 years, its very helpful to know if I'm forecast to be on during a holiday

PorridgeAndSyrup · 07/03/2026 22:03

They've even found artefacts that they think were used by stone-age women to track their periods!

Olive96 · 07/03/2026 22:03

I don’t know anyone in my immediate circle that doesn’t have an app to track them 😅

fetchacloth · 07/03/2026 22:03

I tracked mine during the perimenopause until the actual menopause on the advice of my GP.
I think this is a normal activity.
