To feel insulted over opened bottle of wine

So my neighbour and I get on well although aren't big friends as don't have a lot in common. But we're there for each other when needed. She started with the Christmas and birthday gifts about two years ago. Nothing expensive, just a token gift like a small plant or pair of socks. I volunteer in a charity shop so for her last birthday a few weeks ago I got her present from there. It was something for her kitchen and brand new costing me £5. For my birthday she gave me a bottle of red wine (I only like white) but the issue was that it had been opened and was about three quarters full. I remember her telling me that she and her son opened a bottle of wine at Christmas and just had a small glass each as they aren't drinkers. My first thought is that the opened wine she's given me is that same bottle. My son said just tip it down the sink and say nothing. But I'm feeling insulted. The wine smelt like vinegar and maybe I could have been ill if I'd drunk it. I'm so tempted to say something to her but at the same time don't want to fall out. Is my son right? Should I just write it off (she's not that bright and probably doesn't realise that red wine goes off). Aibu to feel insulted?

Insulted is a bit much. Just don't get each other tat any more.

She gave you an opened bottle of wine? How rude and ignorant of her. She must be really odd.

I’d not say anything as that’s also rude. Just throw it out and make sure not to give her a gift next time.

'she's not that bright and probably doesn't realise that red wine goes off'

'I got her a present from the charity shop'

😄 you don't like her and I reckon that she has realised and is over your shit 😄

It was odd behaviour to be sure. Maybe she just grabbed a bottle and didn’t realise or remember it had been opened?

However, your son is right imho.
Just let this go.

CamillaMcCauley · 07/03/2026 18:42

It wasn’t a very good gift but to say you might have gotten ill from drinking it is just melodramatic.

fndshalom · 07/03/2026 18:43

OMG grow up is this is real.
Look at the world right now. Is this actually worth a post?

Itsmetheflamingo · 07/03/2026 18:45

ill from drinking “off” wine. No you could not 🤣

don’t worry about it OP. No big deal.

Dearest Brenda, I know you're not very bright but I could have literally died from drinking that opened wine. Do not darken my door again with your inferior gifts.
Regards, Blue no 15.
Block and move if possible.

Don’t you think it’s faster and less drama to just set the house on fire?

How flammable is wine, just out of interest? 🍷🔥

B1anche · 07/03/2026 18:53

I would assume that she ad picked up the wrong bottle and had forgotten they had opened it . I can't believe anyone would intentionally gift someone an opened bottle of wine.

Vartden · 07/03/2026 18:54

If it was a screw top she might not have realised.

Lol. Thank you I needed that

Owly11 · 07/03/2026 18:55

If someone called me 'not that bright' I would be a bit insulted 🤷🏻‍♀️

Who wants or needs less drama 🤷‍♀️

DeedlessIndeed · 07/03/2026 18:57

Maybe she bought it over to avoid waste, not realising it had gone off.

It isn't a present though lol.

Just ignore and stop the "gifts"

JLou08 · 07/03/2026 19:01

Cheap red does smell of vinegar. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get ill from a bottle opened two/three months ago.
Your being dramatic, just pour it away and forget about it.
