Help!! I missed the general waste bin day. What do I do??

As title suggests!

I have no idea how I’ll survive 1.5 weeks without a wheelie bin since ours is totally full.

what do people do in this scenario? Our neighbours all have young families and have very full bins come collection day, with lids struggling to close. The nearest tip is 30 mins away. 🙈

You spend tonight putting it in bin bags and tomorrow driving to the tip and back

Doggymummar · 06/03/2026 18:41

I did this a couple of weeks ago. I put it in the garage and then put it all out for next pickup

Xiaoxiong · 06/03/2026 18:45

Agree with @BlueMum16 - go to the tip yourself tomorrow with your black sacks.

But! Don't waste the trip, do a load of decluttering tomorrow as well and get rid of a whole car-load of stuff since you're going there anyway. It'll be so cathartic!!

rainbowunicorn · 06/03/2026 18:46

If you have a car then take it to the tip.

RvLl · 06/03/2026 18:47

What you could do is to put your new litter into smaller carrier bags and bin them as you go to places (eg in petrol station).

Squ1ggle · 06/03/2026 18:48

Where we are (north west) there are a couple of local companies that do private bin collections. Think it's about £10 and they come in a proper bin lorry and empty it for you on an agreed day just like the council do. Possibly worth looking into if the tip isn't close enough

Whaleandsnail6 · 06/03/2026 18:49

If you have a car, it will have to be a drive to the tip unfortunately.

If not, buy a metal, lidden bin off Amazon, put it in the garden with exces rubbish bags in and try and squeeze an extra bag in your wheelie bin the next few times its emptied

Twasasurprise · 06/03/2026 18:49

If you go to the tip, be aware that some workers cut open black bin bags looking for recyclables.

A poster on here told us about being humiliated and berated for having sanitary towels (BLOOD) in her black bag, as she had bathroom waste in it.

Forthesteps · 06/03/2026 18:50

Go to the tip or ask nice neighbours if you can use theirs.
It happens. Annoying but fixable.

Hillarious · 06/03/2026 18:51

And then think about your waste habits. What are you putting in the general waste that means it’s full?

Oh, stop it. You have no idea of other people's circumstances.

Tip

Scarlettpixie · 06/03/2026 19:06

Put your 'new' rubbish in strong black bags and when you have a couple take them to the tip. If you are like me, you will have been chucking stuff loose or in kitchen bin bags into the green bin and not fancy trying to get it out and bag it up now after it's been festering!

Alternatively, try to minimise what you throw away for the next month, do the above until the next collection and then put a bit extra in over the next couple of collections until you are caught up.

Coconutter24 · 06/03/2026 19:08

Empty the contents of the outside bin into bin bags and take to the tip

I do this as our general waste collection is every 3 weeks! Use nappy sacks and take out 2-3 per day at supermarket/petrol station/high street bins.

Have done this for years. God knows what I am paying council tax for? We don’t have street lights around here either (dark sky).

Happytaytos · 06/03/2026 19:11

How often is it normally collected? Sounds like every weeks.

For now the tip is your only option.
Long term, consider what you're throwing away. Could you recycle more?

AnotherHormonalWoman · 06/03/2026 19:12

I did exactly the same this week!

I've done it in the past too, though not for a long time. I've got room in my bin this time, but last time I made sure any rubbish I accumulated while at work and out and about in the car I found a public bin for, and squished it all in the wheelie bin in the end.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 06/03/2026 19:13

My general waste bin is always virtually empty.

Are you not re-cycling anything ?

Mailegchristmas · 06/03/2026 19:13

Check your local council website - on ours you can book a one off collection if you miss it. You do have to pay for it but will save the hassle of the tip

WhereYouLeftIt · 06/03/2026 19:18

"I have no idea how I’ll survive 1.5 weeks without a wheelie bin since ours is totally full."

If it's totally full, won't you have to take your rubbish to the tip yourself? Our council refuses to take extra bags of rubbish left beside the bin, everything has to be within the bin and the lid able to shut.

I would do as already suggested, scour the house for anything else that could go to the tip as well, and do that tip-run!

AnotherHormonalWoman · 06/03/2026 19:19

OMG SSHTAAPPPPP with the holier than though posts about your general waste bins being empty! 😂 😂😂

OP's isn't. Mine isn't. Yes I recycle everything that I can. I have a compost bin AND I pay extra for a brown bin as well as the general recycling bin. Not everything is recyclable.

Mine is always full (we are allowed 3 bags per fortnight), but I have even more recycling. It could just mean she has a full house?

Gettingbysomehow · 06/03/2026 19:24

I just take any excess stuff to the tip which luckily is just 10 minutes away but Id still do it if it was an hours drive away.

Paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, food all in free re-cycling bins.
Garden waste usually a separate charge - if used.

What have I missed? What goes in General bin ?

GardenGaff · 06/03/2026 19:26

Just go to the tip, so what if it’s 30 mins away.

Or buy a wheelie bin compactor off Amazon to see if you can squeeze more in.
