Help!! I missed the general waste bin day. What do I do??

As title suggests!

I have no idea how I’ll survive 1.5 weeks without a wheelie bin since ours is totally full.

what do people do in this scenario? Our neighbours all have young families and have very full bins come collection day, with lids struggling to close. The nearest tip is 30 mins away. 🙈

Our tip doesn't accept mixed bagged waste.
You can get private collection, but make sure legit

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/03/2026 19:29

Sometimes needs must and you just have to put on your oldest clothes and climb into the wheelie bin to trample it down to make space. Granted I’ve only done this with our garden waste bin (I love it, it’s one of my favourite jobs!) so accept trash might be stinkier and more difficult. Otherwise, double bag it and put it in the garden shed / garage / under a tarp in the garden if you have any of these until next trash day. Or, find your local neighbourhood FB / Next Door group and see if anyone will let you use free space in their bin. As a childfree couple with minimal output we always have space and would help someone out!

gerispringer · 06/03/2026 19:30

Do you have separate recycling, food waste, garden waste bins? If so there’s not that much that needs to go in the general waste is there? Soft plastic can go back to the supermarket. But seeing how yours is full I’d do the tip run or you can pay a waste collector. If your council is like ours you now have to book a tip slot in advance or they turn you away.

Happytaytos · 06/03/2026 19:32

Another one who has a mostly empty bin, or 1 bag a fortnight for 4 of us. Recycle tin, plastic, cardboard, glass, food and garden waster. There's not much left.

Glitterblue · 06/03/2026 19:32

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 06/03/2026 19:25

Paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, food all in free re-cycling bins.
Garden waste usually a separate charge - if used.

What have I missed? What goes in General bin ?

We don’t have bins where we are for glass, plastic or food, so all that has to go in our general waste. Cat litter, nappies, food packaging all have to go in general waste as well. Cat food pouches as well say they can’t be recycled.

You have missed the point that not all local authorities have the same wate/recycling rules!

I do this as our general waste collection is every 3 weeks! Use nappy sacks and take out 2-3 per day at supermarket/petrol station/high street bins.

Have done this for years. God knows what I am paying council tax for? We don’t have street lights around here either (dark sky).

Ours is 3 weeks as well now. I may get some nappy sacks for this purpose!

Crofthead · 06/03/2026 19:39

My bin gets emptied once every three weeks. Misses point of thread

WittyJadeStork · 06/03/2026 19:40

Try and book a private collection. There might be a company that specialises in extra residential collections or a commercial waste collection service might do it. I have an extra business bin and we don’t have a business it’s only £15 for a collection. Might be more if you’re a one off collection

TheeNotoriousPIG · 06/03/2026 19:46

Either go to the tip, do your best to compact it, or... can you squeeze some of your rubbish in a bin at work, or in public bins? (I don't mean personal items, like sanitary waste, but other things would be fine).

On the odd occasion that mine is full, I put it in one of the big bins at work, as our general waste bins only get emptied once a month. The council never collects our food bins, so if the dogs can't eat it, it has to go in the ordinary bin.

Pedallleur · 06/03/2026 19:52

RvLl · 06/03/2026 18:47

What you could do is to put your new litter into smaller carrier bags and bin them as you go to places (eg in petrol station).

This. Smaller bags as lots of waste bins have wide slots. Or go to the tip. The current fashion seems to be fly tipping judging from the state of the roads

misssunshine4040 · 06/03/2026 19:59

Hillarious · 06/03/2026 18:51

And then think about your waste habits. What are you putting in the general waste that means it’s full?

be serious

PropertyD · 06/03/2026 20:02

Nappy sacks take a lot tbh. Everytime I fill up with petrol I put a few in the petrol station bins. Again if I am going shopping a few are put in the car park bins. We have two reycling bins and those are always full along with the general waste bin. I also use a food waste bin but not like a slave. We also have a dog who eats scraps. When I go into our office I also take a carrier bag full.

I use the tip but am not making a special journey.

Our council doesn’t collect food waste- that goes in the general waste. (I’m pretty good with mine and rarely fill my general waste bin, but can see how others might run into problems if they’re having to throw food away).

And then I guess there’s nappies, pet poo bags, cat litter, snotty tissues, kitchen roll, sanitary towels, tampons... There is a fair bit of stuff that has to go in general waste.

OMG SSHTAAPPPPP with the holier than though posts about your general waste bins being empty! 😂 😂😂

OP's isn't. Mine isn't. Yes I recycle everything that I can. I have a compost bin AND I pay extra for a brown bin as well as the general recycling bin. Not everything is recyclable.

This. I've got a plastic/aluminium bin, a paper/cardboard bin, a garden waste bin, and my general waste is STILL full every fortnight, and I live alone!

BashfulClam · 06/03/2026 20:11

Happyjoe · 06/03/2026 19:20

Mine is always full (we are allowed 3 bags per fortnight), but I have even more recycling. It could just mean she has a full house?

Ours is collected every three weeks and is always totally full despite recycling.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 06/03/2026 20:11

In the 1970'S, our bin man would open your back gate (never locked) if you had forgotten to put it out, haul the metal bin onto his shoulder and saunter off whistling, down the Ginnel to the waiting Lorry.
Happy days.🥹

Meanwhile, if you can't get to a tip, just use the 3 bins with strong bin bags and swap over before they are each emptied.

Not all plastic can go into recycling and quite a lot of food packaging is not suitable either. Can't put shredded paper in recycling, some of packaging from things arriving in a parcel too. I hope you're not putting things that are not suitable because you think you're doing the right thing as there are plenty of people who do it wrong.

Did you really want me to list a whole load of stuff to put in a bin or would you rather just have a nice evening and do something useful instead?!

Allschoolsareartschools · 06/03/2026 20:17

I'd put my new rubbish into tied up plastic carrier bags & use public bins. There's one at each bus stop around here & they're usually empty.
Our recycling centre won't accept bin liners full, they're very thorough

Fleurdalys · 06/03/2026 20:18

Stick it in the bottom of your recycling bin
Cardboard on top so the jobworths don’t notice
Yep they put it all in the same wagon here 🤣

HortiGal · 06/03/2026 20:20

I know my council if you call the next day to say you forgot they’ll come back for the bin.

This is not allowed if a public bin and counts as fly tipping...

And not to mention all the councils who sell our rubbish overseas, all to end up in landfill, including recycling!

And our recycling is all mixed up, I'd be amazed it they went through it all. My parents had bags for different things, glass, paper and plastic. I always thought they may be more genuine.

My late father in law did this for 30 years on the bin on the corner! Nobody noticed.. you'd have to be very unlucky to be seen!

SusanChurchouse · 06/03/2026 20:25

Our waste bin collections are every 4 weeks so you’re basically on the same cycle as me! Agree with either storing stuff in sturdy bags and adding to your bin over the next few collections, going to the tip, or organising a private collection.
