Help!! I missed the general waste bin day. What do I do??

As title suggests!

I have no idea how I’ll survive 1.5 weeks without a wheelie bin since ours is totally full.

what do people do in this scenario? Our neighbours all have young families and have very full bins come collection day, with lids struggling to close. The nearest tip is 30 mins away. 🙈

Oh, stop it. You have no idea of other people's circumstances.

No one likes a knowitall

I do 🙋🏻

This is not allowed if a public bin and counts as fly tipping...

In theory; the bin police are always ready to pounce on this.

But are they strangely absent for the mountains of waste at the side of the road.

StolenTeapots · 06/03/2026 20:45

Yabu. I dont even have bins. Not even recycling bins.

I just eat all my rubbish. I make soup out of cardboard and tin and it lasts all week to go with my mn chicken.

You are all so lazy. You disgust me.

I called the council and they collected it a couple of days later...might be good luck though!

superchick · 06/03/2026 21:01

I cant believe people regularly take their household waste out in smaller bags to put it in public bins. I've occasionally seen people do this and I assumed they must be either unwell or homeless.

But I don't ever have a full bin, I only put it out once a month even though they come fortnightly so I guess I never really thought about what other people have to deal with who have lots of kids or other needs.

Tippexy · 06/03/2026 21:06

I’d report it as a missed collection and see if they can come back 🤭

thetruthshallsetyoufreebutfirstitwillpissyouoff · 06/03/2026 21:19

There is a really simple solution here... just go on holiday until the day before the next collection... then any additional rubbish you create is holiday bins problem rather than yours. Simple 😉

Lavender1974 · 06/03/2026 21:24

Are you sure that you don’t have a missed bin option with your local council? We do and I have done this couple of times. Just a couple of steps online and it has been picked up a day or so later. Really straight forward.

That is only for the council not showing up. OP said they missed the collection which sounds more like the council came round but the bin wasn't put out in time.

gamerchick · 06/03/2026 21:29

I take them to work and use the big outside bins there. By stealth.

DappledOliveGroves · 06/03/2026 21:31

Just search your local Facebook group for private black bin collection - they’re around £15 and they’ll come and sort it.

tutugogo · 06/03/2026 21:34

The tip, cheapest option (waste pick up here is about £60).

I would take the opportunity to look at what you are throwing away to see if some can be recycled or composted to avoid issues in the future - for reference we have 1-2 black sacks, 1/2 a small wheelie bin every 3 weeks, collections switch to 3 weekly last June.

Paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, food all in free re-cycling bins.
Garden waste usually a separate charge - if used.

What have I missed? What goes in General bin ?

We haven’t got food recycling here yet. Doesn’t start for a while yet.

Our general bin is mostly cat litter, food and non recyclables. It depends what recycling your council takes, they aren’t all the same and general is only collected once a fortnight. Ours isn’t usually full but close.

Alas one of my cats is very particular about her litter and doesn’t like the biodegradable sort. If you use what she doesn’t like she pisses on the beds. So that’s a good 40l of litter a month for starters.

tutugogo · 06/03/2026 21:39

@Happyjoe

most plastic can now be recycled though the thin plastic may need to be taken to places like supermarkets. Our council (from last June) has accepted bread bags, crisp packed etc for recycling if tied into a bag eg put all in the bread bag, our Sainsburys also has a thin plastic pick up point

SplendidUtterly · 06/03/2026 21:42

RvLl · 06/03/2026 18:47

What you could do is to put your new litter into smaller carrier bags and bin them as you go to places (eg in petrol station).

This is what I would do (and have done!)

Hillarious · 06/03/2026 18:51

And then think about your waste habits. What are you putting in the general waste that means it’s full?

My thoughts too. We are a family of four with pets and it’s less than half full (wheely bin) when we put it out every fortnight.

They fine you in our area if you get caught doing it too!

NotDarkGothicMama · 06/03/2026 21:55

Find out which street nearest to you has a collection early next week and wheel your bin round there. Otherwise, it's a tip trip.

Sympathies. We're lucky as the bin men do our side of the road early, then the other side on their way back to base. On the numerous occasions when we forget to put it out the night before, I just nip out bin over the road and it gets collected with the others.

darkchocolatebounty · 06/03/2026 21:55

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 06/03/2026 20:11

In the 1970'S, our bin man would open your back gate (never locked) if you had forgotten to put it out, haul the metal bin onto his shoulder and saunter off whistling, down the Ginnel to the waiting Lorry.
Happy days.🥹

Meanwhile, if you can't get to a tip, just use the 3 bins with strong bin bags and swap over before they are each emptied.

It’s truly amazing how people of a certain age always manage to mention how much better they thought life was 50 years ago no matter what topic is being discussed. It really is quite the skill…

BlueMum16 · 06/03/2026 18:41

You spend tonight putting it in bin bags and tomorrow driving to the tip and back

This. This is what we do

Ball ache

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 06/03/2026 21:56

Twasasurprise · 06/03/2026 18:49

If you go to the tip, be aware that some workers cut open black bin bags looking for recyclables.

A poster on here told us about being humiliated and berated for having sanitary towels (BLOOD) in her black bag, as she had bathroom waste in it.

I read that post and thought it was outrageous and awful.

But we have been moving house and I have had to visit our tip a few times and the truth is it not a “tip”. It is a recycling centre.

There is a receptacle for almost anything you might need to recycle but there is no “big bin” for things that you would normally put in your black wheelie bin for landfill. They ask you what you need to recycle and they direct you to the right dumpster. If you say “where does this bag of mixed landfill stuff go”, they tell you to take it home and put it in your black wheelie bin.

My general waste is always full on collection day. 5 of us in the house, we recycle anything recyclable, it’s still always full.

For ours it's most plastic. We can't recycle much plastic at all. I do try not to buy much plastic but cleaners, yogurts, the plastic trays some meat and fish comes in all can't be recycled. They also won't take any recyclables that has food on it, so no pizza boxes, broken glass that had food in it, tomato puree tubes, egg boxes where an egg has broken, foil, wax paper, tetra packs also aren't recyclable here. Kitchen towel, crisps packets, most of the kids snacks, the netting Clementines come in, medicine packs, toothpaste tubes, moisturiser tubs/ tubes, make up containers, cat and dog food packaging. We buy recyclable and reusable stuff where possible, but still fill our general waste bin each fortnight. Supermarkets need to do more to reduce plastic packaging, especially on fruit and veg. And more councils need to offer tetra pack recycling.

My cardboard bin is constantly full, the glass& can one not so much as I reuse jars. We have to pay extra for garden waste and we don't pay, so we can't recycle food waste as they won't provide a caddy and won't take bags by themselves. We generally put food scraps in our compost but can't do cooked food or meat in that.

Ours has a ‘mixed misc waste’ dumpster for the sort of stuff you’d normally put in your black bin. They do split the bags though to check there’s nothing recyclable.
