Well, not actually skiing.

I’m going to a ski resort for a few days, not to ski, to see snow-so building snowmen, sledging etc, are jeans weird? What to wear? I have boots, warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves etc
Dh says jeans are weird

Are they?

Jeans aren't waterproof. The snow will melt on them and they'll be really heavy, damp and uncomfortable.

You need waterproof trousers, even ones that go over normal trousers (like for walking) will do.

You'll need waterproof gloves as well.

Brentinger · 05/03/2026 20:26

Yes - never seen anyone on the ski slopes with jeans....and wet jeans will feel awful when you fall!

Lmnop22 · 05/03/2026 20:26

Yes. Jeans are weird. You need something waterproof!

somekindof · 05/03/2026 20:26

They are very uncomfortable and chafe if they get wet, which there is a high chance of in snowy places . They are not very warm unless you have thermal leggings underneath.
Not weird, just not the best most practical choice.

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 05/03/2026 20:26

Denim is not for snow. Cold and uncomfortable.

LeavesOnTrees · 05/03/2026 20:27

Don't forget the sun cream as well.

gldd · 05/03/2026 20:27

I've skied in jeans before, it's unusual but fine as long as you don't fall over. It's a certain point of pride at various down-to-earth Canadian ski hills to rock the denim. If you just for walking around, fine. If you're going sledging i'd probably aim for something a little more waterproof though. For an hour or so fine, if you want to be out for longer, maybe not.

TowerRavenSeven · 05/03/2026 20:36

Cotton kills.

Sustainbrain · 05/03/2026 20:36

Decathlon do reasonably priced ski wear definitely get some and some snow boots with decent grip. Also suncream v imp!

Keepoffmyartichokes · 05/03/2026 20:42

I've just got back from Norway, there were a few people not skiing but they all still wore waterproof salopettes.

Specialagentblond · 05/03/2026 20:44

Yes definitely wear Salopettes with some base layers. I go cheap ones from Lidl for 12quid this season.

itsgettingweird · 05/03/2026 20:44

Nope jeans are not a good idea. Denim isn’t warm.

for walking round resort - fine with good boots.

for snow activities they are totally unsuitable.

You either need thermal under layer with water proof trousers (regatta cargo ones are good) or ski trousers.

1457bloom · 05/03/2026 20:47

I have skied many times in jeans, no problem at all.

Bitzee · 05/03/2026 20:47

Everything gets snowy and wet. If you’re planning on riding any lifts, sledging or sitting outside at a restaurant you need waterproofs. And jeans are also the worst for keeping you warm! I’ll walk around a ski resort in jeans only if going straight from accommodation to a bar/restaurant. Get some cheapo ski trousers from decathlon and wear leggings underneath. You will not regret it.

Besafeeatcake · 05/03/2026 20:47

I grew up in Canada. It’s the worst thing you can wear for cold. You will be cold, wet and they will be heavy and stick.

Invest in cheap snow pants.

SliceofTosst · 05/03/2026 20:49

No! Not suitable at all. Hold the wet and stay cold.

APatternGrammar · 05/03/2026 20:49

Loads of people ski in jeans, I always see at least one and you aren’t even skiing.
Depends on the temperature and how cold you‘d feel after landing in the snow while sledging.

Abd80 · 05/03/2026 21:46

Yes. You need ski trousers or a ski suit
jeans get cold wet and heavy very fast

Mabobsleigh · 05/03/2026 21:48

Oh, I voted YANBU. I mean, for non skiing activities where you won't be sitting in the snow, jeans, jumper, boots and coat are ideal. If you're rolling around in the snow you need baselayers and solopettes.

JarvisIsland · 05/03/2026 21:52

Fine for walking around the resort, going to bars/restaurants etc. I have ski’d in them when suddenly everything opened after being closed for avalanche blasting and we couldn’t be bothered to go back and get changed. It was fine but not the most flexible for moving around. I’m somewhat competent and we noodled around on easy pistes but I wouldn’t want to be in deep wet snow in denim. If you are doing snow mucking around, sledging etc then you want at least some winter walking trousers possibly with waterproof over trousers, if not salopettes.

They tend to be locals, in my experience, so they’re not out all day on the slopes and they just go home and change.

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 05/03/2026 21:57

The only person who ever skied in jeans was probably a member of Status Quo!!

ForPearlViper · 05/03/2026 22:41

I believe rain is forecast in much of the UK. Go outside in your jeans and let them get wet, stay outside for a few hours. Snow makes you wet too. Is that how you want to feel all day on holiday?

Shoemadlady · 05/03/2026 22:44

You’ll be freezing. Just get some thermal sallopettes
