The rat expert..

On This Morning, just claimed rats ‘collapse their skulls’ to get through gaps. This is just fundamentally not true! Rats skulls are rigid like humans and all other mammals. Collapsing their skulls is a myth - often repeated on the internet.

She also said she found a giant rat who had fed on protein powder and saw a rat fighting a cat. So….

Surely, ‘experts’ should know what they’re talking about!

Yes it annoys me when a so called expert comes out with something completely wrong. Or a journalist gets some basic facts completely wrong. Like a newspaper description of Avonmouth being in North Somerset... when if it wasn't actually in the County of Bristol, it would be in Gloucestershire.

YNBU to expect an actual expert to have some expertise in their chosen subject. YABU to expect This Morning to have actual experts on it. It's the TV equivalent of the trash magazines that havr headlines like I Fell in Love With My Step-Dad's Ghost.

Who remembers 'sexperts' of the noughties? Wheeled out to spout absolute nonsense about sex on every cheap reality show going, and ever present on morning telly.

Ooh listen to her, she's a sexpert 😂

Surely we need balance ?

Womanofcustard · 05/03/2026 11:39

Not sure about rats, but mice have very malleable bones, including their skulls. However, neither can ‘collapse’ their skulls. Looks like the ‘expert’ is confused!

What? Some experts that know what they’re talking about and some that just…don’t?

I’m afraid it’s not true about mice either. Their skulls are also as rigid as ours.

the ‘collapsible’ skeleton of rodents is a complete myth!

Seems fair. Otherwise it's a bit elitist.

Are you high?

How on earth can you ever see a use for an expert that doesn’t actually know or understand their subject of expertise? This is how wrong information ends up in the public domain - I don’t know shout you, but I trust information from someone I’ve been told is an expert in that field far more than someone who isn’t.

All I remember is being told that the public has had "Quite enough of experts" and from then on being subjected to any amount of utter bollocks in the name of balance.

ZookeeperSE · 05/03/2026 12:08

I think the people of this country have had enough of experts - Michael Gove 2016…

@NotAnotherScarf
I live 2 minutes away from Avonmouth. As you say it's in Bristol however the next closest county is North Somerset. (Gordano/Pill/Portishead being known as North Somerset)

It’s fine to counter expert advice - but you can’t say that person is an expert if they are not. By all means use someone else to give different intonation and allow the public to investigate for themselves…. But if you say someone is an expert in something they should be.

How would you feel about your child being taught maths by an expert in maths vs a non-expert - but you were told they were an expert when in actual fact the things they were teaching your child was incorrect. I can’t imagine you’d be pleased when they failed their GCSE having been told by the teacher they were on track for a 7-9 based on what that teacher had been teaching them.
