Family friends around for dinner Saturday night- can i do a roast?

I will start with the fact i love a good roast, and i know logically you can have one any time,BUT it seems odd to eat one on a Saturday night for some reason.

Apart from the fact i like a roast, another benefit it brings is that i can prepare most of it in advance so it still enables me to drop kids to and from their clubs and I know they will also eat it!! Win win

Would you think its a strange choice if you went around for an evening dinner and were served a roast dinner???

Unreasonable- you can not serve a roast for saturday night dinner
Reasonable- stop being silly thats perfectly fine

I’d absolutely do a roast especially if everyone will enjoy it

vincettenoir · 04/03/2026 21:58

I think a roast always goes down well and it would be generally well-received and a good talking point.

I guess one downside is that some of your friends might be having a roast the following day. But that doesn’t seem like a biggie.

LollipopLil · 04/03/2026 21:58

I'd love a roast so it's a yes from me.

Even though I'd still cook my own the following day 🤗

Bristolandlazy · 04/03/2026 22:00

Mmmmmm can't go wrong with a roast.

firstofallimadelight · 04/03/2026 22:00

No it’s not Sunday!

ThiagoJones · 04/03/2026 22:01

I don’t see a problem with it necessarily, but for some reason I wouldn’t fancy a roast on a Saturday night! I’m not a big roast fan anyway but I see them more as an afternoon comfort food followed by chilling out on the sofa type meal rather than a dinner party type meal.

keepwakingup · 04/03/2026 22:01

not on a Saturday night!

blankcanvas3 · 04/03/2026 22:02

I wouldn’t mind a roast. But if you want to do prep earlier you could make something like a chilli!

hmmmwhattoeat · 04/03/2026 22:02

Woohooo- this is positive so far 😃.

I’d be delighted to arrive at a friend’s on any day of the week to find they had made me a roast. I mean, the Tony Carvery is open all day every day so eating a roast at any time or day is clearly acceptable (I’m sure your roasts are better than the Toby Carvery though!)

hmmmwhattoeat · 04/03/2026 22:04

Ahh not so positive anymore 🤣.
I see others feel the link to Sunday is too strong too. :(

Do they like roast dinners? I’d be very happy to be served one but you know them well so you’ll know whether they’ll be the same.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 04/03/2026 22:07

Ooh I'm in camp No - sorry girl, as much as I love a roast, its not Saturday night dinner appropriate! 🥰

Bonkers1966 · 04/03/2026 22:07

All I can say is : if I was heading to yours for a dinner party any night of the week and you put a roast dinner in front of me and offered me a glass of wine 🍷. Nom noms. Genuinely thrilled 😁

BruFord · 04/03/2026 22:08

We love a roast-especially when it’s cooked by someone else! As long as they enjoy roasts, it’s an excellent idea. 😋

50Balesofgrey · 04/03/2026 22:08

How about toad in the hole, with all the sides? Saves buying a joint.

TheQueenOfTheNight · 04/03/2026 22:08

We had one today 😂
At this time of year, any day is perfect for a roast!

mindutopia · 04/03/2026 22:10

I personally wouldn’t want a roast on a Saturday evening. I’m not a huge fan of a roast anyway, but Saturday is for something a bit fresher and more exciting than a roast.

But you can absolutely mimic the cooking process - do a leg or shoulder of lamb with Middle Eastern sort of spices, serve with flatbreads, hummus, olives, salad. This is our Easter meal every year. Same easy cooking process but not meat, potatoes, veg and gravy. Or do a stew with new potatoes and greens, again you just have to whack the meat in the oven for a few hours and then the sides take like 10 minutes.

GrillaMilla · 04/03/2026 22:10

I'd have a roast dinner any day of the week, with lots of crispy roast potatoes, followed by crumble and custard 😋

NoisyGreenNewt · 04/03/2026 22:10

I think it's more than fine. Maybe I'm lazy but I think it's the ideal hosting meal - easy to alter for preferences and not much faffing around at the end as long as it's timed okay (and not doing yorkshires!)

You could send a message soon with the effect of 'doing a roast if you have any requests', so they don't get something in for Sunday and can plan around. I don't think it's henious at all, it's meat and veg!

fluffiphlox · 04/03/2026 22:12

A roast dinner would be my absolute last choice at anytime. I’d be surprised to be given it on a Saturday night. To me, it’s just not dinner party material.

BillieWiper · 04/03/2026 22:13

No I think it's weirder to start cooking at 9am and be eating at 12-1pm. To me it's too hectic for the cook and too heavy a meal that early.

So evening is perfect. You do slow roasted meat if you do want to do prep earlier on in the day. But you can use shop bought stuffing and pig in blankets etc, and do a tray of roast veg and potatoes all together to save on oven space.

In fact I'd cook a chicken on top of the potatoes and veg then have greens or peas and ready made stuffing as sides. And definitely no shame in using bisto!

MrsClattenburg · 04/03/2026 22:14

YABU because to me, a roast is an awful meal, I'd be gutted to be served one any day/night of the week 😫

Myfridgeiscool · 04/03/2026 22:15

We had a roast last night that was truly better than our Christmas dinner, pure chance.
Get your oven on OP. If they don’t want another roast on Sunday they can get themselves a pizza 🥳

I agree. It’s just a bit dull and heavy for a dinner party.
