Family friends around for dinner Saturday night- can i do a roast?

I will start with the fact i love a good roast, and i know logically you can have one any time,BUT it seems odd to eat one on a Saturday night for some reason.

Apart from the fact i like a roast, another benefit it brings is that i can prepare most of it in advance so it still enables me to drop kids to and from their clubs and I know they will also eat it!! Win win

Would you think its a strange choice if you went around for an evening dinner and were served a roast dinner???

Unreasonable- you can not serve a roast for saturday night dinner
Reasonable- stop being silly thats perfectly fine

I love a roast but there is something off about having it on a Saturday night. I think because to me it is followed by a nap!

The other day I did a delicious slow cooker brisket. We had it piled in soft rolls with sautéed onions and a little bowl of dipping gravy each. I would probably opt for something like this with roast potatoes to be eaten with fingers on the side and corn on the cobs.

Uticary · 05/03/2026 08:45

I love a roast, but I would do one or two curries the day before, or lasagne etc so that on the day it is just sides.

PistachioTiramisu · 05/03/2026 08:53

All those who say a roast should only be served on Sunday, do you never have a roast chicken during the week? I would be thrilled to be served roast beef or chicken on a Saturday. I don't agree with PP who have suggested anything very spicy or unusual vegetables - personally I would be unable to eat anything like that, but of course if you know your friends like that type of food, it's a good idea.

Growlybear83 · 05/03/2026 08:56

@PistachioTiramisu I’ve never cooked a roast of any kind on any day apart from Sunday, with the exception of Christmas Day. I don’t have the time to cook two separate meals on a week night, which I would have to do if I roasted a chicken for my husband.

I think the answers you are getting depend on whether people love a roast or not. I am in the former category. In fact I often cook a roast on Saturday night and then have another one on Sunday or Monday with the left over meat. My mouth is watering now. Laughing at how the middle eastern cuisine is somehow superior. I love all cuisines but you can't beat a roast and it's definitely not just for Sundays.

I don't think anyone said it's superior - just that IMO it has more of a Saturday night with friends feel, along with Thai or Mexican dishes

I love a roast!

Could you maybe make it a bit more Saturday night dinner by doing a roast but a different theme?

What about a roasted Greek style leg of lamb, with roast potatoes, Greek salad, roast Mediterranean veg, tzatziki… maybe a bit of flatbread on the side

dottiedodah · 05/03/2026 09:16

Well a roast would be welcome by me! Roast Beef in particular with yummy Yorkshire puds

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 05/03/2026 09:24

I LOVE a roast dinner but I wouldn't do one, or fancy eating one, on a Saturday night if I am being honest.

Saturday nights I love something I wouldn't normally have in the week like a homemade curry with all the accompaniments.

Yum! Can I come to yours for dinner? 😛😂

FusionChefGeoff · 05/03/2026 09:32

Can you do a roast but with slightly different tweaks so gammon, roasted mixed root veg, parsley sauce not gravy etc??

CasperGutman · 05/03/2026 09:38

If you love a roast dinner and you're skilled at making it, then there's nothing to stop you serving it any time. It's a great meal when done well.

But if you're worried everyone will be having something similar on the Sunday and want to make something different then as others have suggested maybe consider a twist on a classic roast.

For example, roast a chicken with a barbecue style spice rub, make some little roast potatoes with Cajun seasoning, and have veg that suit the theme, e.g., corn on the cob, greens, sweet potato. Serve a homemade barbecue sauce instead of gravy.

Or roast a chicken with Moroccan spices, and serve it with a pile of aromatic cous cous and other suitable accompaniments.

I would eat a roast dinner any night of the week very happily

I love the advice to avoid a roast by doing a roast with different carbs and veggies as somehow not a roast and so magically lighter

I think it's more about suggesting different flavours in case they're having a more traditional one Sunday. That's all.

Franpie · 05/03/2026 09:46

I’m in the no camp.

Too heavy for a Saturday night and it will also be a bit crap if they were planning on having a roast in their own house the following day.

MysticHalfWitch · 05/03/2026 10:07

I’d be delighted.

LOL! We actually eat like this quite often as DP and I don’t eat carbs but the kids do. And we rarely eat processed foods now as a result. Usually do a meat with salad and veg plus a carb

But for the potatoes we par boil baby new potatoes, squash them, add olive oil, garlic cloves, rosemary, salt and pepper and then roast them till a bit crispy. Super easy. The kids love them! Perfect to dip into tzatziki. I consider them a healthier option than normal roast potatoes because of the extra fibre from the skins and the healthy fat from the olive oil - and they just get more of a reaction from guests who have had them too

FlippityFloppityFlump · 05/03/2026 10:21

I would hate a roast on a Saturday night dinner party. Like a pp for me a roast is lazy afternoon meal. I do enjoy one occasional but would be disappointed to have one on a Saturday night. It's a bit boring and bland for a Saturday (even though my DH makes a fantastic one)

For some reason, to me Saturday night food should be more fun and a bit more interesting. Or something like a takeaway with a film when feeling lazy (not with guests obviously).

Might not make sense to others but it's just the way I feel about Saturday (and Friday) night food

I am actually going to do these next week. They sound well lush!!! 😍

I don't think we know anyone who has a full roast dinner on Sundays. Even when I was a kid I didn't know many people who did a roast every Sunday, my family never did it and most people I knew only did so occasionally. Didn't this tradition mostly die out in the 1970s? I'm surprised so many posters are horrified by the idea of a roast on a Saturday.
A roast has never been associated with Sundays for me so I see no issue with having it any day of the week that suits you.

renovationqueen · 05/03/2026 10:53

I don't care what day I eat a roast but it would be a bit heavy for me for a dinner party.
Some of the meals I cook for friends that can definitely be done earlier in the day : lasanga, fish pie, chicken pie, carbonara, chicken and bacon creamy tagliatelle, jambalaya. You could also just do roast meat, potatoes and veg as a halfway point to a full roast.

fouleetmites · 05/03/2026 10:55

Ask them. I’d love it - but I guess if they have plans for a big roast the following day as well they may prefer something else 🤔

Comtesse · 05/03/2026 11:24

I do think say yorkshire puddings are more a Sunday thing. But roast potatoes or a roast chicken - any time, no problem! And LOL that roast is any heavier than a lasagne - yeah right…

CinnamonBuns67 · 05/03/2026 12:14

I'd eat a roast any day of the week. I'd go for it.

noidea69 · 05/03/2026 12:28

For me i'd not be too keen on a saturday night.

If you are after something you can prep in advance do a lasagne.

Also why are you doing all preparing food & doing clubs, where's husband in this?
