To claim for train delay

TeaAndBrie · 04/03/2026 15:49

I’m on a work trip to another office a couple of hours away. My work have paid for the tickets upfront for the train journey.
the train is heavily delayed - not sure how long as it’s still not moving.
aibu if I claim for the compensation for the delay even though I didn’t pay for the ticket?!

My work are fine with me claiming on the basis that the compensation is for the inconvenience and it was me who was inconvenienced.

When I have claimed in the past it was put back on the card I bought it on. So I’m not sure how this would work if you haven’t paid personally.

dizzydizzydizzy · 04/03/2026 15:53

If you it makes you feel better, you could give rhe money to charity. Presumably you have been very inconvenienced though. Definitely claim.

Why not ask your workplace?

MotherofPufflings · 04/03/2026 15:55

Based on previous threads about this 50% of people will think YABU and start warning you that it's fraud, gross misconduct etc.

The other 50% will say YANBU because it's to compensate you for your inconvenience.

Personally, I've claimed on my expenses for the ticket and then claimed the delay-repay refund. All good, I still have a job and a clear conscience.

AelinAG · 04/03/2026 15:59

I claim it

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 04/03/2026 16:01

Consider it an overtime payment because it’s work that meant you were stuck travelling overtime

StripyHorse · 04/03/2026 16:03

Who is loosing out due to the delay?

E.g. if you are late home then of course you should be compensated.

If it means you get to the other office late - then potentially it is (morally) wrong to claim, although, if the knock on effect is that you have to spend more time making up the work, then you are still the one being inconvenienced and should be compensated.

If you paid on a work's credit card though, it might be tricky to get them to pass the compensation back to you.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/03/2026 17:35

My work let me keep it, as it’s a payment for my inconvenience. They paid for me to get from A to B, which is what happened. I’ve lost my evening!

You can nominate a PayPal account to get it paid into. It doesn’t have to go back to the account it was paid from - I have done this also when tickets were bought from a travel agent as part of a package.

As PPs have said, there was a long thread about this recently. The best advice any of us can give you is check your employer's policy.

loveawineloveacrisp · 04/03/2026 17:52

I've claimed hundreds over the years in delay repay for business travel. It quite often has meant I'm home extremely late so it's a compensation for my time. It's not fraud.

HeadyLamarr · 04/03/2026 17:59

I always claim it.

TeaAndBrie · 04/03/2026 18:10

Thanks everyone, sorry I had no idea that there was a thread about this recently!
thankfully home now and will check at work tomorrow to see what they say.
I’ve completed the delay repay form online and will go from there.

I would claim it, it’s your inconvenience and your the one whose delayed

Alwayswonderedwhy · 04/03/2026 18:15

Husband commutes to London & claims every time he's delayed. You don't have to get work involved.

TreesinthePark · 04/03/2026 19:14

I've always kept the money and so have my colleagues. I work in the finance dept and it would be a hassle to account for staff trying to have it paid to the company.
