Yakult?

which do I buy tomorrow? Sorry to post in AIbU but I’m desperate

m My stomach has been fine all day.
Food intake up until dinner time …

porridge oats with honey
Tomatoes and garlic on toast
walkers crisps

all fine … then I had dinner - cottage pie (homemade) with broccoli

I now look 9 months pregnant and I’m in pain. What the hell caused it??

ingredients - beef, onion, garlic, carrots, tomato puree, Worcester sauce, beef stock, potatoes, butter

Did you use rapeseed oil? My sister gets similar bloating and pain when she has anything with it.

Though I think most supermarket breads and walkers crisps have it so possibly not that. But it definitely sounds like an intolerance to something.

DollydaydreamTheThird · 03/03/2026 21:41

You need to get a food intolerance test done to find out what it is. What is the actual issue? Is it bloating and wind? If so I suspect its the onions, garlic and broccoli. You need to look up the low FODMAP foods. Also a lot of people are sensitive to tomato skin. My mum wont eat them for that reason.

Firry · 03/03/2026 21:42

Onion and garlic.

WonderingWanda · 03/03/2026 21:42

Probably the onion, garlic or brocoli. Look up a low fodmap dirt.

Areyoukiddingme99 · 03/03/2026 21:43

Second low fodmap, although I eventually ended up going gluten free with similar issues 10 years ago and never looked back! Within a week the symptoms had all subsided.

Biskitteef · 03/03/2026 21:43

I was suspecting the onion 😞 I had garlic for lunch and I was fine.

Are you taking any supplements?

I'm the same. I worked out a calcium supplement was causing a lot of issues.

Chestnutmarenutjob · 03/03/2026 21:44

It’ll be the onion

Simplesbest · 03/03/2026 21:44

Try taking slippery elm

What did you use to thicken the gravy?
It could be an intolerance/allergy to MSG.

Abd80 · 03/03/2026 21:46

Have you seen an nhs dietician and gone on fodmap diet to help identify triggers

Plain flour - forgot about that bit 😬 but then I had bread at lunch and was fine?

How much butter? I’m lactose intolerant but the GP just fobbed me off with IBS until I figured it out myself.

Quite a lot but but I drink milk in coffee multiple times a day

Yogurt has a tendency to set me off though

Are you windy?
There is an app that records and identifies potential illness based on strength and duration of wind breaking. It uses ultrasonic sensitivity that a human ear would not pickup

Iron, biotin and magnesium citrate (but not every day)

Have you tried low FODMAP?

It’s worth a go. I had to give up onions and garlic (alliums) but it has helped.

What do you use instead of onions? I have onions in every evening meal 🤦‍♀️

Are you peri/menopausal? Since perimenopause my stomach has not been good. I get bloating & wind & feel that I need to have more bowel movements to feel better. When I skip a meal or just have one main meal a day, I feel so much better especially the day after.

Biskitteef · 03/03/2026 22:16

I think I’m in Peri yes, my memory is also going at an alarming rate

It’ll be the vitamins, there’re all known to cause digestive issues in some people.

i had to stop iron, calcium and magnesium due to bloating, gurgling, wind etc,

Exactly the same here.

asparagusffern · 03/03/2026 22:28

If you can't tolerate onions, shallots are an alternative. DS can't have onions, but is fine with shallots.

IME, you need to keep a detailed food diary. Line down the centre of the page, write everything you eat, with the time on one side, your symptoms and the time on the other side. It can take a few weeks but you will start to see a pattern.

I assumed a trigger for me was dairy but actually it's high fat dairy, I'm ok with low fat milk & cheese, but butter and cream are a definite no.

similarly I assumed wheat was the issue but it's actually yeast. I can eat pasta or soda bread but not soft fluffy white bread or croissants.

Digestive enzymes really help me, take one at mealtimes, makes a noticeable difference.

marcyhermit · 03/03/2026 22:33

I get those kind of issues with gluten. It doesn't hit me immediately though, usually hours later, so the lunch time toast might make me ill that evening or the next day.
