m My stomach has been fine all day.
Food intake up until dinner time …

porridge oats with honey
Tomatoes and garlic on toast
walkers crisps

all fine … then I had dinner - cottage pie (homemade) with broccoli

I now look 9 months pregnant and I’m in pain. What the hell caused it??

Did you re-heat anything? Re-heated potato (& pasta) apparently changes their enzymes iirc and can cause digestive issues.

Lightuptheroom · 03/03/2026 22:43

Onions (DH can't touch red onions) or the oil you use for cooking, has to be sunflower oil as both myself and my ds are intolerant to anything corn based.

Blinky21 · 03/03/2026 22:51

Walkers crisps now give me a bad stomach, they didn't used to. Onion and garlic are pretty common intolerances, as are cruciferous veg, like brocolli. Try low fodmap

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 03/03/2026 22:56

I was about to suggest iron when I saw you said you’re taking it. I’m currently on it and it gives me a really painful stomach. It took a little while to figure out what it was as it isn’t nausea like I used to get when taking a multivitamin with iron years ago. Now I get pain and bloating and usually the day after taking it, not immediately after.

Ohnobackagain · 03/03/2026 23:05

Oats are terrible for me @Biskitteef also give me indigestion

OliviaBonas · 03/03/2026 23:41

Yes even the gentlest iron tablets are brutal on my stomach unfortunately. I am trying the spray as I’m permanently exhausted.

Second low fodmap, although I eventually ended up going gluten free with similar issues 10 years ago and never looked back! Within a week the symptoms had all subsided.

This. I had migraines since teenager, then bowels problems started. Had blood test showed wheat intolerance and have been Gluten Free for 18 years. Migraines disappeared and no more tummy issues. I would never have known by keeping a food diary. Can you get an allergy test done by GP for Gluten .... or Lactose intolerance 🤔

ithinkitsawindyone · 04/03/2026 00:23

Its the magnesium supplements, they call magnesium citrate magnesium sh*trate, its used as a laxative!

Giraffehaver · 04/03/2026 00:37

Mine turned out to be garlic which is rubbish because I love the stuff

Talkingfrog · 04/03/2026 00:52

I know you said you had been tested for celiac, but was it bloods or an endoscopy? If only bloods it could be worth requesting referral for an endoscopy to see if that shows anything. I didn't know I had an hiatus hernia until an endoscopy.

I didn't go to the gp in relation to my stomach, but as a result of what i did experience the gp did a range of bloods and the celiac antibodies were raised. Also showed I was anaemic, which i thought might be the case.

You indicated that you were taking iron. I don't have side effects from taking iron, but i know lots of people do.

CharlotteCChapel · 04/03/2026 00:55

I my case it was barley and they hide that in everything.

OSTMusTisNT · 04/03/2026 00:55

I react terribly to onions, belly blows up like a balloon and magically deflates when I'm sleeping.

Onions also give me a weird dry mouth so suspect it's a food allergy.

ProfessorBinturong · 04/03/2026 01:04

asparagusffern · 03/03/2026 22:28

If you can't tolerate onions, shallots are an alternative. DS can't have onions, but is fine with shallots.

IME, you need to keep a detailed food diary. Line down the centre of the page, write everything you eat, with the time on one side, your symptoms and the time on the other side. It can take a few weeks but you will start to see a pattern.

I assumed a trigger for me was dairy but actually it's high fat dairy, I'm ok with low fat milk & cheese, but butter and cream are a definite no.

similarly I assumed wheat was the issue but it's actually yeast. I can eat pasta or soda bread but not soft fluffy white bread or croissants.

Digestive enzymes really help me, take one at mealtimes, makes a noticeable difference.

I agree with this. Food diary, in detail - write down food, drink, supplements etc in detail (include brand for anything ready made so you can look up ingredients if it ends up on the 'potential problem' list).

Don't assume the meal immediately before the symptoms is the culprit. That may be the most likely one, but depending on the cause and type of reaction some can take longer. Look for common factors for at least the preceeding 24 hours.

Is the magnesium supplement something you take as a laxative, or for the magnesium? If the latter, switch to magnesium glycinate.

JustAnotherWhinger · 04/03/2026 01:16

Onions, garlic and tomato would be high on the suspect list.

i can’t have onions or garlic at all. Tomatoes I can tolerate but a very small amounts and once a day - twice and I’m suffering.

Keep a diary with food and timings. Mine seemed baffling as I kept reacting right after meals, but it actually turned out to be the ingredients of the meal before.

PrincessofWells · 04/03/2026 01:46

It'll be the broccoli. All brassicas are a pain when ibs is an issue. Follow fodmap.

I use probiotics in tablet form which help alot during bad episodes.

Pukekopalace · 04/03/2026 01:54

Onions, garlic and broccoli have a similar effect on me. I can sometimes tolerate them in very small quantities if they are well-cooked. You can use asafoetida to replace the onion/garlic flavour, to some degree.

BananasAreForever · 04/03/2026 03:39

I have similar tummy issues and am perimenopausal I suspect.

I can't have tea and coffee anymore without having tummy pain and bloat, even decaf. There might be other triggers but this is the main one for me.

Monsterslam · 04/03/2026 06:43

It'll be the magnesium citrate. I lost about half a stone before I realised that the citrate was not doing my stomach any good whatsoever!

HopSpringsEternal · 04/03/2026 06:52

We have lots of intolerances in our family with a range of symptoms. All slightly different. First off, for some of us, the symptoms aren't immediate. For my DS it takes 2 days for him to vomit after lactose. DD get terrible achy joints and swollen stomach a few hours after gluten. I get immediate pain (stabbing) after onion or garlic but itchy and flu like after citric acid.

It was a complete ball ache working it all out and 1 had to do a complete exclusion diet. The other two low fodmap.

piscofrisco · 04/03/2026 07:29

OliviaBonas · 03/03/2026 23:41

Yes even the gentlest iron tablets are brutal on my stomach unfortunately. I am trying the spray as I’m permanently exhausted.

Could you try Spatone or similar liquid iron? It’s the only iron I can tolerate.

rosydreams · 04/03/2026 07:38

similar situation doctors say i am fine but cheese and to much grease o my

If you take iron its probably the iron my stomach super sensitive to iron .Causes the worst tummy issues .I cant even take floradix

GoGoSuperBug · 03/03/2026 21:50

How much butter? I’m lactose intolerant but the GP just fobbed me off with IBS until I figured it out myself.

Same here I had „ibs for year but it was lactose.

TheAutumnCrow · 04/03/2026 12:26

Biskitteef · 03/03/2026 22:02

What do you use instead of onions? I have onions in every evening meal 🤦‍♀️

I used to eat a lot of onion and garlic as well! Gradually I started to become really intolerant and unwell.

Mostly we replace them in sauces with things like grated carrot, finely chopped capsicums, cornichons, capers, courgettes, mushrooms, black olives, tomatoes (skinless), pickled jalapeños, paprika, herbs, spices (some people rate asafoetida).

I can eat very small amounts of sweetcorn, peas, or green beans at a time. Broccoli I can only eat if it has been frozen and then boiled a bit - I think it knocks a lot of the FODMAPs out of it. Pickling also helps, so I can eat pickled beetroot, gherkins and olives. Beans and pulses are tricky and I avoid them.

I terms of upping fibre I eat oatcakes, ryvita, and sort of rotate avocado, kiwis, unripe small bananas, satsumas, tinned tomatoes, seeded sourdough (frozen then toasted), an few cashews/peanuts, and berries.

You get used to it. Everyone who has done the Low FODMAP exclusion/elimination plan has to find their own individual way.

PrismRain · 04/03/2026 12:28

Have you had a HbAc1 blood test?

TheAutumnCrow · 04/03/2026 12:58

ItsStillWork · 03/03/2026 22:22

It’ll be the vitamins, there’re all known to cause digestive issues in some people.

i had to stop iron, calcium and magnesium due to bloating, gurgling, wind etc,

Same.

I’m forever trying to eat the best food (that I can tolerate) to get the most vitamins and minerals.

I was frequently anaemic (iron, B12). I don’t like eating meat so eat more fish (esp sardines, salmon, tuna, herring/kippers and mackerel) and eggs.

Also nutritional yeast (Engevita) is good in sauces & soup etc.
