To think the World Cup should be cancelled now?

Apologies if there's already a thread but I've looked and can't find one.

The (mens) Football World Cup starts in June, in the USA. Surely it shouldn't go ahead? Iran is one of the qualifying countries!

I can't see how the tournament should or could go ahead. AIBU?

Also why cancel it? England has the stadiums to host it tomorrow so i would just suggest a change in venue.

Never in the world though would FIFA pull the plug on it happening in America.

So have many countries.

Mexico and Canada could help out, they are already involved.

Happyjoe · 03/03/2026 15:53

Yeah, cancel it.

Only because I cannot stand football! Still, at least there would be a more positive reason for all the flags tied to lampposts.

GasPanic · 03/03/2026 15:55

SerendipityJane · 03/03/2026 15:45

England has the stadiums to host it tomorrow

But hardly the infrastructure.

Of course it does.

If it had/has the infrastructure to hold the Olympics in 2012 and the Euros in 2028 it has the infrastructure to hold a World Cup now.

That doesn't mean it would be perfect and there would probably have to be some adaptations, but certainly possible.

Replacement bus services ?

Although the flags are already up, I guess.

tobee · 03/03/2026 16:06

Wouldn’t they need to print out new tickets if it was hosted here tomorrow? Just coz we have the stadiums…. (lol)

It would require a modicum of planning.

Ah, I see the problem now.

You're right, it was a ludicrous suggestion.

Thanks, @YankSplaining . Gives a sense of proportion.

Yep

HelpMeGetThrough · 03/03/2026 16:10

Too much money will be lost, can’t see them cancelling it.

“Everywhere in the US” is not going to be a target for terrorist attacks. 😂 Terrorists are drawn to large or important places so they can make a big statement and have high causalities. Right now I’m sitting in a TJMaxx parking lot in a Midwestern state and I’m more “afraid” of a student driver sideswiping my car than anything else.

Some of you have just the goofiest ideas about the level of risk everyday Americans are living with. It’s a geographically massive country encompassing everything from cities with high crime rates to small towns where the local cops haven’t dealt with a homicide since Bush was in office. And by “Bush,” I mean the elder one who came after Reagan.

This is MN, the whole of America is more dangerous than Kabul, Tel Aviv and Caracas put together. There is a school shooting in every town every week. Everyone owns a gun and uses it willy nilly, especially in public. No one has health insurance - that’s a big conspiracy - all Americans pay out of pocket for healthcare and at least half of them have become bankrupt due to medical bills. Probably more like two-thirds. Every town and city is overrun with homeless people and drug addicts who are prone to attacking tourists, especially in New York. Goodness knows why 100m tourists flock there every year. Everyone works 60+ hours a week, no one gets more than 5 days’ annual leave per year, new mothers get 2 weeks’ maternity leave if they’re not fired on the spot for getting pregnant in the first place, and minimum wage is $1 per hour. It’s a depressing, dangerous wasteland and people are leaving in droves (immigration and work visa stats are another conspiracy).

Signed,
A Brit living (and thriving) in the US 😁

ApplebyArrows · 03/03/2026 16:12

Islamic terrorists largely left the US alone following 9/11 even as the Americans tore apart Afghanistan and Iraq. European targets are probably easier for them.

BeardofHagrid · 03/03/2026 16:22

Oh yeah, definitely. Just get rid of it because of a little scuffle 🙄 Or why not make it like the Olympics, any countries we don’t like can compete under the no fixed abode flag.

President Trump did the only thing he could which was to attack Iran as they interfered in the election and the hard left liberals kept on mentioning him in the Epstein files. Also he did not want to play second fiddle to Israel when they bombed Iran and he wanted to be the one who won the war. These are perfectly rational reasons. It would be good to use this to cancel the midterms to stop the libs from stealing the vote and proclaim himself President for life.

If the World Cup does not go ahead, he may have to invade Greenland and the EU to stop the libs from going on about Epstein.

the hard left media in this country seem to not want to support the greatest president who ever lived.

tobee · 03/03/2026 16:27

Yes well the last bombing at a major worldwide sporting event was at the Atlanta Olympics by a home grown terrorist if I remember correctly.

In other words you can’t tell what might happen but I can’t imagine the USA hosting an event like the World Cup with their friends in Canada and Mexico without pretty good security, last weekend’s (and future days) events not withstanding

Except this year’s Paralympics Winter Olympics where Russia will be competing under their own flag

flapjackfairy · 03/03/2026 16:29

we will be subjected to Trump wanging on about how it is the best world cup ever blah blah blah and trying to fiddle the result. And then whoever wins it will all be about him yawn

greatvisuals · 03/03/2026 16:30

TheAutumnCrow · 03/03/2026 14:04

Obviously I’d prefer the war to be cancelled.

Yes!

Hard left media in this country. Yeah right. Hoping this is satire

He can be crowned world king at the final

flapjackfairy · 03/03/2026 16:41

Smeuse · 03/03/2026 16:35

He can be crowned world king at the final

yes because whoever wins he will be responsible for their victory of course

AnnaQuayRules · 03/03/2026 16:45

I suppose I can't understand how a country that has attacked another country in possible (probable?) breach of international law can be deemed an ok place to hold an event as large as this

Plus the possibility of terrorism has just ratcheted up twenty fold.

@Crushed23 I don't subscribe to that theory at all. My PiL live in rural PA, Im very well aware it's nothing like the streets of Kabul!

He will also receive the Golden Boot and the Golden Glove.

Lots of Mumsnetters seem to have a weak understanding of cultural and legal differences between the states, too. “I would never DREAM of moving to New Hampshire with my teenage daughters! What if they want to access contraception or abortion and the evangelical Christians who run the US won’t let them?” 😂

MetroCas · 03/03/2026 17:01

It’s being jointly hosted by two other countries, I don’t see any reason why it needs to be cancelled.

Wellthisisdifficult · 03/03/2026 17:08

Well clearly not! I’m still not getting why this should be cancelled, the last one should have been and that went ahead under far more dubious circumstances

MetroCas · 03/03/2026 17:12

I’m interested to know where the World Cup can be held if we’re basing it on moral purity.
