Dd is half iranian. Iranian Dad is not around. In Uk btw running a business but not really involved. She is worried about anti Iranian feeling which is so sad as she was just feeling so proud of her iranian/persian heritage. We were doing persian cookery I've already had a few anti iranian comments this morning at work. I havn't mentioned dds ethnicity.
How do I deal with this?
Obviously I will carry on the cooking etc.
Please be gentle btw.

Very few people will know that someone is half Iranian on sight and from what I've seen most people are sympathetic to Iranians, especially girls.

Unless you mean Islamists like the group of Pakistani men who attacked a car in London because it had the Iranian flag on it?

Why would anyone else be anti Iranian when we all know the regime is despised by the majority of Iranians?

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 03/03/2026 13:31

Actually I am not aware that there is much anti Iranian sentiment among most British people. Anti-Iranian Islamist fundamentalist regime yes. Anti-Iranian, no. Probably quite the opposite.

Skybunnee · 03/03/2026 13:33

If it was me I’d just keep quiet about heritage and if she dresses in western clothes how would anyone know.
btw I only feel sorry for Iranians -don’t see why there should be animosity as it has been an evil ruling regime in the wrong not the people.

Agree

Tulipsriver · 03/03/2026 13:40

I'm sorry she's feeling worried, it must be tough for you too Flowers

I'd keep celebrating her Iranian culture with her. Food is great but maybe also look for some inspiring people to look up to.

How old is she? If it's comments from other children she is worried about, practice some responses with her (maybe something about being proud to be half Iranian because of how brave the protesters were to stand up for their freedom?)

AnneLovesGilbert · 03/03/2026 13:45

I've already had a few anti iranian comments this morning at work

Like what?

Springisnearlyspring · 03/03/2026 13:45

What type of anti Iranian comments?
I’d have thought most people if commenting in a uk workplace would be along lines of hoping things now improve for Iranian people especially women.
Is she perhaps worried she’ll get questions re her extended family eg how her gran or cousins have found living there and her experiences visiting and it puts her on spot with her limited connection with her dad.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 03/03/2026 13:46

What anti Iranian comments have you heard at work?

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 03/03/2026 13:48

What were the anti Iranian comments you heard? I just can't imagine anyone except for extreme religious type people saying something negative about Iranians?

Raquelos · 03/03/2026 13:50

I am so sorry she is worried. As others have said, I am surprised that you are seeing anti-Iranian sentiment, as it is the opposite of what I am seeing. Perhaps she could emphasise Persian rather than Iranian to help stupid people distinguish between the people and the regime.

Starlight1979 · 03/03/2026 13:50

You've had a "few" anti-Iranian comments at work this morning?! Really?! Where the hell do you work?!

Springisnearlyspring · 03/03/2026 13:51

I’m assuming dad/his family not part of ruling fundamentalist regime?

Is there any need?

Springspringspringagain · 03/03/2026 13:57

It is very very stressful for those of Iranian heritage to be worrying about this, even if they would be completely against the regime and absolutely not identifying with it in any way.

I have a few students in this group.

That said, I can't imagine anyone is going to say anything to your daughter, because no-one thinks young half-Iranian women are pro the regime! Most people I know are interested in Persian culture and not anti-Iranian (except the current regime) at all.

Support her by listening about her stress about her dad's origin country.

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 03/03/2026 14:05

I can't speak for everyone, obviously, and I certainly don't speak for racists, but I don't conflate the oppressive authoritarian Iranian regime with the brave Iranians who've been risking their lives to fight it and regain their freedoms.

She can be proud of her Iranian heritage and Iranians, especially Iranian women, have my full support and admiration as they hold out for freedom.

ERthree · 03/03/2026 14:07

You say you have had comments made to you at work, why ? they don't know your childs father is Iranian.

Katiesaidthat · 03/03/2026 14:09

She should call it "Persian heritage" never Iranian. Most people who would make comments are so pig ignorant they don´t realise Persia is Iran.

Miranda65 · 03/03/2026 14:12

Is there anti-Iranian feeling? Most of us just want the Iranian people to be free in their own country, at last, and so we support them. (Obviously, that is very different to supporting the current Iranian regime).
Most of us have been worrying about Iranians for weeks, given the murders and repression going on in the country.
Refer her to the wonderful interview with Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in today's Times.

goz · 03/03/2026 14:12

Several anti Iranian comments in one day alone?

Carycach4 · 03/03/2026 14:12

She's not wrong though! The op's dd is thousands of miles away from any trouble!

Pinemartin4 · 03/03/2026 14:13

My god there's some shite on here.... next..

tutugogo · 03/03/2026 14:13

I have an Iranian friend, she stresses she’s Persian not Iranian and family members of hers were murdered by the regime, she escaped with her mother as a child. I think many of us know that Iranians mostly hate their government so I think any issues will disappear quickly as far as sentiment. I can’t get angry with Russians here either, it’s not their fault

JHound · 03/03/2026 14:14

She'll be fine.

She won't register to people as specifically Iranian and there is not much anti-Iranian sentiment in the UK for its own sake.

That's an awful comment. Her daughter has Iranian heritage, it literally is about her country of origin and how she feels about it.

It's not like someone saying "OMG. I went in holiday to Iran once". Her daughter doesn't have her Iranian parent around to help her process what's going on. @youalright, you ABVU.
