AIBU To not want to pay for a subscription I tried to cancel before payment

i had a subscription with Butternut Box but my freezer is full of it so I tried to log into pause the deliveries. Initially, I only wanted to pause it for a few weeks.
I couldn’t get into my account. I used the “forgot password” option multiple times and no reset emails came through even to the spam folder. I even realised I’ve never had any order confirmation emails from them.
Because I didn’t want another box going through and I couldn’t get in to cancel, I blocked them with my bank before the money was taken.
They’ve now contacted me saying the payment failed, the food has already been made, and they’ll keep retrying the payment. They’re also saying they won’t cancel the subscription until the outstanding balance is paid and at this point I want to cancel with them completely because I think it’s wrong to not try payment before making the food.

You didn’t actually cancel. You stopped payment for an active subscription, which is your fault, even if you were having issues with resetting your password. It’s why they have customer service available. You should have contacted the helpline for assistance rather than just preventing payment, because preventing payment isn’t ending your contract with them, it just stops you from fulfilling your obligation. Their terms are really clear about how cancellation works, including that debts need to be cleared before the subscription can be ended. Pay up, and speak to customer service about your password to cancel properly.

I would say you’re in the wrong here , yes it’s frustrating but you could have make a phone call and spoke to someone.

Not sure what the subscription is but I’m afraid it sounds like you have not cancelled with them and they are perfectly entitled to pursue you for payment. I would suggest you pay, receive this order and ensure you cancel whilst on the call to pay.

Or... You could have called them? Emailed them? Anything to try and contact them?

You are in the wrong here. You should have contacted them to cancel particularly as you knew the item was going to be made. I had a look on their website and they have multiple ways to contact customer service. You should have done that. You need to pay and then cancel.

How did they contact you?

ZookeeperSE · 03/03/2026 15:15

If you couldn’t access your ac - and have never had a confirmation email from them - it is likely to be because you signed up with the wrong email address rather than the password. When you sign up to a subscription you are agreeing to an ongoing contract with them, until such time as you cancel. If you blocked the payment with your bank they will have explained that although they can block payment it is not a substitute for you cancelling the subscription and you are still abilities to do that.
How did they contact you? Did you tell them to cancel the subscription in future? You definitely owe them for any order that has occurred before you cancel.

They contacted me on an email address that is clearly linked to the account but I have never had any confirmation emails from them and password reset emails weren’t going to thata email so I didn’t know which account it was linked to.
I didn’t contact them because I didn’t think they’d be able to do anything and I could be anyone trying to alter someone else’s order.
Ok I am going to pay but because they made it so difficult to cancel I won’t be using them anymore.
