Police van camera. I despair, what does this mean?

I did 45 in a 30. I didn’t realise the limit had changed from 50 to 30. There was a police speed van and obviously they will have got this. Does anyone know what will happen? Internet search is not helping, some sites say 6 points and 28 day ban and others say usual
fine and can do driving course. Very worried and I am usually such a careful driver!

OP posts:
Coldtoots · 02/03/2026 20:10

I got 3 and £100 fine
no previous

Tangelablue · 02/03/2026 20:14

I got a speed awareness course for doing over 40 in a 30. Can't remember exactly the speed I was doing tho.
Take the course if it's offered.

Jellybunny56 · 02/03/2026 20:14

You won’t be offered the course for 45mph in a 30 typically.

Most likely will be as PP says £100 fine and 3 points but it depends on the area/circumstances. You would only be looking at 4-6 points or a 7-28 day ban if it was sent to Magistrates Court as sentencing guidelines classify 45mph in a 30 as Band B so 4-6 points, 7-28 day ban, fine up to 100% of weekly income etc. Typically cases get sent to Magistrates only if circumstances made the speeding more risky so for example if it was on the same road as a school or nursery, if there was roadworks on that road, if you already had points etc

dadtoateen · 02/03/2026 20:17

45 in a 30?? No excuse for that

bet there was signage to say the limit?

best case, fine and points or go to court and have your day

alexdgr8 · 02/03/2026 20:17

Have you asked about this already recently. ?
Sounds familiar.

Tacohill · 02/03/2026 20:38

It depends if you’ve had a speeding ticket recently or any points.

I had a speeding ticket (34 in a 30 which had recently been a 50 zone) and I was offered a driving course or 3 points.

I believe there was a fine too.

I did the online course and it was absolutely fine but I’m not sure about your situation.

If you get offered to do the course then do it as it’s really not that bad.

Dawnintheageofaquariams · 02/03/2026 20:40

45 in a 30 is well over.
There must have been signage indicating the speed?
A 30 is streetlights and residential unless told otherwise.
No previous, they might offer you a course, but 42 is the threshold.
Otherwise 3 points and a fine, usually £100. But can be higher.

Ragged · 02/03/2026 20:46

Few days ago I made a similar post. No, I am not same person as OP.

I got offered an education course today (phew).
The first available slot was Wednesday this week which is impressive.
I also try hard to stay within speed limits but I am not the perfectly aware and always-do-everything perfectly driver.

There is Not much you can do OP except try to get thru the process quickly once you get the notice so you find out your fate sooner rather than later. I was caught speeding on 22nd and got outcome today, only 9 days is not so bad a wait.

HalzTangz · 02/03/2026 20:49

Surely as a driver you should be reading road and speed signs. I don't think the police would accept a 'i didn't realise' as an excuse. Maybe the lesson to be learned is take notice of signs and abide by them

Oh don't be horrible. It was a familiar road, speed limit had changed, she didn't notice. Far different from intentional speeding which a lot of people do - especially men.

Especially men 🤣🤣 oh my god that is so funny…

so didn’t notice? Driving without due care and attention then?

guess a man was at fault for that too?

NotTerfNorCis · 02/03/2026 21:02

Not saying she's blameless, but an honest mistake is a lot different from doing something on purpose.

And yes, men are more aggressive drivers.

The OP has come here for support, not a pile on. If you were talking to her face to face, I hope you wouldn't be so obnoxious.

She’s not asking what excuse to use on the police to get away with it; she’s asking what the consequence is.

No, asked for advice not support.
the honest mistake doing 15mph over the speed limit could be the difference between killing someone or not.

Fends · 02/03/2026 21:25

You’ll be offered a speed awareness course. £95 and no further action once you complete it.

No need to make anyone aware eg insurance or anything like that.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 02/03/2026 21:29

I did 44 in a 30. Was £110 fine and 3 points. The road went from 50-30-50-30-40-50 but the 30mph had changed to a 50.

Allsizes8to14 · 02/03/2026 21:32

I did 65 in a 50 🫣 first and only offence (On the A1, speed changed from 70 - 50 and I didn’t start to slow down early enough 😬) I wasn’t offered course, I assume as was too far over? Got 3 points and a fine

Its not likely to be offered for that ratio OP quotes. Courses are offered for people 'mildly' speeding as the instructor at a course I attended described it.

I was doing 57 in a 50, which is 'mildly' speeding apparently.

Fends · 02/03/2026 21:36

Oh dear. Think I might be wrong here then!

This gets trotted out all the time. She was driving in a 30, if she hit someone at 30, she would kill someone.

Potentially yes, another 15mph and pretty sure it would happen.
so you support her driving with no due care and attention then?

Lonelycrab · 02/03/2026 21:41

Pay attention to the road signs?

Did that stretch really reduce from a 50 to a 30? Haven’t seen that happen much…

Probably 3 pts if you’re lucky OP.
