Police van camera. I despair, what does this mean?

I did 45 in a 30. I didn’t realise the limit had changed from 50 to 30. There was a police speed van and obviously they will have got this. Does anyone know what will happen? Internet search is not helping, some sites say 6 points and 28 day ban and others say usual
fine and can do driving course. Very worried and I am usually such a careful driver!

I was doing 36 in a 20 zone (won't waste time trying to excuse it) and got 3 points, plus fine.
I was too far over for the speed awareness course.

Quite a lot of the roads near me have changed from 60 to 40, so I will believe OP that a 20mph difference is possible.
(Just in case people ask whether I'm in favour of the change, I'd say yes, if it's made clear, but I'm more concerned about overall safety. With all the potholes, it was probably safer when the roads were 60. Until relatively recently, the roads were well maintained and there were fewer accidents.)

Fair enough, but I’ve never seen a 20mph reduction overnight and I’m a 10k miles year driver all my life.

A road near me changed from 50 to 40 just recently, but because I was paying attention while driving I saw the sign and adjusted.

How can she kick a kitten from a speeding car?

🤣

Drive more slowly

RedRiverShore6 · 02/03/2026 22:27

I would expect 3 points and a fine but hope for a course.

Blinky21 · 02/03/2026 22:32

45 in a 30 is crazy and if you hit someone it doesn't matter if it was intentional or that you are usually a good driver. You aren't a good driver if you can't tell the speed limit

The road I was caught on doing 57 in a 50 had changed from 70 to 50, its a 2 lane dual carriageway.

So you missed the sign that denotes the speed limit then…

I solve this problem by paying attention.

Yes of course I did, its a road I travel on all the time, this was some years ago, so did not look for, or expect there ot be any difference.

I was answering your point where you seem incredulous that a road would drop 20mph 'overnight'. This one did. As do many

travelallthetime · 02/03/2026 22:41

42 in a 30, thought it was a 60. No excuse but it was a country road and less than 100 yards after I was caught it did turn to a 60. hedges on either side so no child killing would have been involved.

anyway, in 26 years of driving that’s the only time I’ve been caught.

got the course and £100 ‘cost’

don’t beat yourself up, perfect drivers on here obviously. It’s easy to miss a sign and think you’re in a higher speed area than you are

Regardless of how many times you’ve driven the road

If you can’t spot a sodding great red circle with a big number in it, then I worry about all the other things you may not spot.

dadtoateen · 02/03/2026 20:56

Especially men 🤣🤣 oh my god that is so funny…

so didn’t notice? Driving without due care and attention then?

guess a man was at fault for that too?

Last I heard was men were twice as likely to speed than women.
Yeah, 'my god that's so funny'.

Go to court and fight it - that's your right. I did this once. They changed the date 3 times and the location once and on the third date they couldn't locate the paperwork so apologised to me for wasting my time. If you lose the case then you've lost nothing.

This would be stupid and immoral. She knows she was speeding, she made a simple mistake. She simply wanted to know what the outcome might be.

Why would she 'fight' it? On what grounds?

They are not always 'sodding great red circles with a big number on it' in really clear and obvious places though. And occasionally drivers don't notice it til it's too late. (And they are not looking for it, if it's been the same speed for many years and only just changed quite recently!)

Must be so lovely to be sooooo perfect. What's that like? 😃

Oh don't be horrible. It was a familiar road, speed limit had changed, she didn't notice. Far different from intentional speeding which a lot of people do - especially men.

Say that when someone hits you...if she didn't notice then she quite frankly shouldn't be driving

You may get a speed awareness course @Turneinp

Depends.

Why has this road changed from 50 to 30? (MPH) That is a BIG drop in speed.

And WHEN did it change?

In mid February, I did 36-37mph down a road I hadn't been down for a year or so (another town 20 miles away) and I rarely drive down it, and I didn't know the speed had dropped from 40mph to 30mph several months ago. There was a policeman with a speedgun part way down the road and he clocked me. I was like FUCK! I thought it was a road repair man from a distance!

I'm not gonna lie, I didn't notice the new speed sign until half way down this road - it's about two thirds of a mile long... but I guess there must have been one further back, and the one I saw was there - so I only have myself to blame really. I am hoping they take pity on me a bit, as I am not from the area, and the speed only dropped around October 2025.

It has been 2 weeks and 3 days. No ticket yet. I think I will get one! I don't know how long they take.

Best of luck @Turneinp Hope you get a speed awareness course!

I could be wrong but is a policeman with a speed gun not supposed to stop you and fine you? I was told by a policeman that if you are clocked by a copper holding a speed gun they have to give you the fine there and then, unlike the speed vans. I’m in Ireland so probably different rules.

Oh!!! I wonder if that it true??? Well I wasn't stopped.

I do hope you are right!

The speedometer in UK cars is set to be 2-4mph over the speed you’re actually doing.

There’s a good chance you were actually doing 42mph and will be offered the course, and no points.

Not realising the limit had changed is no defence. As a (hopefully) legal driver, she’ll be expected to pay due care and attention to the road. This includes road signs and being aware of your speed.

There’s never an acceptable excuse for speeding.

Doris86 · 02/03/2026 23:13

Car speedos always over read. If the speedo
showed 45mph your true speed would have been about 42mph.

So not as bad, but still quite a way over the limit.

That’s absolutely not true and an old myth, probably from the 80s/90s. I think I heard it then. It should die along with the “common law spouse” rubbish.

My speedometer perfectly matches my tracking and other location apps
