Police van camera. I despair, what does this mean?

I did 45 in a 30. I didn’t realise the limit had changed from 50 to 30. There was a police speed van and obviously they will have got this. Does anyone know what will happen? Internet search is not helping, some sites say 6 points and 28 day ban and others say usual
fine and can do driving course. Very worried and I am usually such a careful driver!

Apologies, what does that mean?

Don’t you know? Thought you were the arbiter of the thread

Lonelycrab · 02/03/2026 21:44

I was doing 57 in a 50, which is 'mildly' speeding apparently

10% plus 2mph is the threshold afaik for “minor” offences so yes.

No I don’t or I wouldn’t have asked the question.

didn’t realise I was the arbiter of this thread to be honest

I was offered a speeding course for 44 in a 30, although this was 15 years ago. Iirc the NOIP was for being 11mph over the limit because they allow 10% for different speedometer calibration.

T1Dmama · 02/03/2026 21:46

Recently did a course for doing 40 in a 30… (costing £98!)
I think he course was offered up to 43MPH & over that was a fine & points.

Haveyouanyjam · 02/03/2026 21:47

Most local police forces publish their thresholds. It’s usually 10% plus 9, so in a 30 the max for a speed awareness is usually 42. There will be some differences amongst forces and some discretion but there would need to be a reason. Likely to be £100 odd and 3 points. No point taking it to court as you don’t have reasonable mitigation.

This is the other thing…. Caught doing 45 is a proper measurement. If the speedo is overreading by say 10% it would have been showing 49….

Fends · 02/03/2026 21:25

You’ll be offered a speed awareness course. £95 and no further action once you complete it.

No need to make anyone aware eg insurance or anything like that.

Not necessarily - 45 in a 30 is more likely to be 3 points and a fine.

Apologies, what does that mean?

It means 'do fuck off, dear'.

No need to despair, op, it's not a hopeless situation. You'll get a fine and points and I'm sure you'll be more observant in future.

likelysuspect · 02/03/2026 21:55

dadtoateen · 02/03/2026 21:40

Potentially yes, another 15mph and pretty sure it would happen.
so you support her driving with no due care and attention then?

Yes I think I definitely said I support her driving with no due care and attention. I definitely said that

You can add in killing children and kicking kittens too, just for good measure.

How can she kick a kitten from a speeding car?

🤣

Ahhh thanks for that.

what lovely people we have on here just because they don’t agree with some random person on the internet

HeisseWeisseSchokolade · 02/03/2026 22:00

For a first offence, and if the excess speed is not too preposterous, a speed awareness course is usually an option. Don't worry too much.

BlueMum16 · 02/03/2026 22:01

Coldtoots · 02/03/2026 20:10

I got 3 and £100 fine
no previous

I also got 3 points and £100 fine.

No option of the course as I was more than 10mph over limit (44 in 30). I thought it was a 40.

RedRiverShore6 · 02/03/2026 22:05

Was this on your speedo, they generally read a bit higher so it could have been 42/43 rather than 45

BatchCookBabe · 02/03/2026 22:11

You may get a speed awareness course @Turneinp

Depends.

Why has this road changed from 50 to 30? (MPH) That is a BIG drop in speed.

And WHEN did it change?

In mid February, I did 36-37mph down a road I hadn't been down for a year or so (another town 20 miles away) and I rarely drive down it, and I didn't know the speed had dropped from 40mph to 30mph several months ago. There was a policeman with a speedgun part way down the road and he clocked me. I was like FUCK! I thought it was a road repair man from a distance!

I'm not gonna lie, I didn't notice the new speed sign until half way down this road - it's about two thirds of a mile long... but I guess there must have been one further back, and the one I saw was there - so I only have myself to blame really. I am hoping they take pity on me a bit, as I am not from the area, and the speed only dropped around October 2025.

It has been 2 weeks and 3 days. No ticket yet. I think I will get one! I don't know how long they take.

Best of luck @Turneinp Hope you get a speed awareness course!

Booboobagins · 02/03/2026 22:12

If the speed limit has recently changed, they sometimes do this and send letters to say the speed limit has changed.

I hope that happens in your case 🙏

Daisymae55 · 02/03/2026 22:12

Dh did similar recently (although I think it was 43/44). He got offered a speed awareness course (he’s never had points or courses before). So you might get lucky and get that or 3 points and a fine. I think it varies a lot across different areas so it’s hard to guess. If it makes you feel better I’ve done this before where I missed where a speed limit changed and got points. Try not to beat yourself up over it.

Depends on the force. My sister and DH have both been done for speeding in a 30mph zone. The 10% plus 2mph would have made it 35mph. My sister was given a fine and points for 33 mph. My DH was doing about 40 (apparently he needed a poo) so totally deserved his points. I've been done by the same force for doing 57mph in a 50mph but I got a speed awareness course instead. My offence was a good few years after theirs though.

LevBee13 · 02/03/2026 22:15

There is no set rule. Legally they can prosecute for you doing just one mile per hour over the limit (although most don't).
I was caught doing 42 in a 30 and was offered a course. I am aware just how lucky I was and am pretty certain it was borderline for points and a fine.

likelysuspect · 02/03/2026 22:18

Theres no set threshold, another thing that gets trotted out on these sorts of threads.

I blame street furniture for people missing signs some of the time, there is too much distraction on the roads and pavements. I can completely understand how OP missed the new signs.

Theseventhmagpie · 02/03/2026 22:21

NotTerfNorCis · 02/03/2026 21:02

Not saying she's blameless, but an honest mistake is a lot different from doing something on purpose.

And yes, men are more aggressive drivers.

The OP has come here for support, not a pile on. If you were talking to her face to face, I hope you wouldn't be so obnoxious.

Agreed. He sounds like a supercilious prat.

Pistachiocake · 02/03/2026 22:22

Lonelycrab · 02/03/2026 21:41

Pay attention to the road signs?

Did that stretch really reduce from a 50 to a 30? Haven’t seen that happen much…

Probably 3 pts if you’re lucky OP.

Quite a lot of the roads near me have changed from 60 to 40, so I will believe OP that a 20mph difference is possible.
(Just in case people ask whether I'm in favour of the change, I'd say yes, if it's made clear, but I'm more concerned about overall safety. With all the potholes, it was probably safer when the roads were 60. Until relatively recently, the roads were well maintained and there were fewer accidents.)

properidiot · 02/03/2026 22:22

42 in a 30 - I got speed awareness course. Was told by police officer who pulled me over at the time that it was borderline and I might get a fine. Thankfully not, no previous.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 02/03/2026 22:24

Try not to catastrophise.

if you were going double the speed limit I believe it’s much more serious. 45 in a 30 is points and a fine. Use Waze in future and it will automatically tell you the speed limits everywhere you go.
