School trip to NYC this Friday.......

AIBU ti think School should be contacting parents to advise of the current situation....

Our 15 yo DD is due to travel to NYC this Friday with School for 5 days, given the current state and everything going on involving the US I imagine the threat to the US and certainly places such as NYC will be on extreme high alert.

As it stands I'm not 100% comfortable with her going now and I know I will be a nervous wreck the entire time she is there (if it goes ahead). this is the first trip of this sort I've any experience with, does anyone have any advice on what measures etc School will be putting in place or if this is a risk School will likely even take by allowing the trip to go ahead?

so far we have heard nothing at all from School not even an text or email to state they are looking into it etc.

It’s only lunch time on Monday, id just give them more time. Or drop them an email asking if they are looking into it. I didn't think travel to the US was being advised against though

Thecows · 02/03/2026 12:21

No reason at all to worry about going to NYC with regards to situation in Middle East. Why would school be in touch?

LadyVioletBridgerton · 02/03/2026 12:22

If you’re that worried then why are you waiting for communication from the school? Tell them she’s not going.

FWIW, I think you’re overreacting.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 02/03/2026 12:23

It's no more dangerous than going to, say, London.

tiv2020 · 02/03/2026 12:25

Suggest you look Nyc on a map OP then compare to where the actual strikes are.

MissPeaches · 02/03/2026 12:27

What exactly do you want the school to tell parents that anyone who lives above ground doesn’t already know? If you are uncomfortable with sending your child that’s up to you but I can assure you everything in NYC is business as usual at the moment.

goz · 02/03/2026 12:27

There is literally no link to New York and what you’re talking about. What measures do you actually feel the school could reasonably put in place?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/03/2026 12:27

There’s no official advice to not travel anywhere in the US.

If you don’t want her to go, that’s your call and you have to face up to telling your dd and losing the money.

SleepingisanArt · 02/03/2026 12:28

The Iranians don't have the capability to strike the USA (Russia does but Putin is pals with Trump currently). I'd only be concerned if the FO advise against travel.

Miranda65 · 02/03/2026 12:30

It will be absolutely fine, and a great experience for all of the kids.

Grow up

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/03/2026 12:31

They’ll be fine.

rainbowunicorn · 02/03/2026 12:31

There seem to be a lot of mumsnetters that have lost their minds over the weekend. What do you think the risk is OP. What is it that you want the school to do? What kind of measures? Why do you think New York in particular would be more risky than any other major city?

There’s concern for safety of and then there is completely irrational paranoia.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 02/03/2026 12:33

Theres a risk of terrorism in the USA. But that's been a risk for a long time. NYC secruity in major attractions are pretty high. Airport style security. The safety of the city hasn't significantly changed. If you weren't worried before YABU to worry more now.

Derpytiger · 02/03/2026 12:35

My brother lives in new York. Life there is going on completely normally. His daughter is going to school as normal, no one is panicking. She'll be fine.

I don't believe it will be any riskier than any US city at the moment..... the issue is these people doing this arn't sane they have/are and will continue to attack innocent people without any thought. What I don't want to do is send my child into unnecessary risk. The risk is already high as we all know but this will intensify this risk and anyone who believes otherwise is quite frankly stupid. I also want her and her friends/group to enjoy it and not spend the 5 days they are there fretting about this etc. This should be a trip of a lifetime for them and I hope it will be. I just thought that School may have sent a blanket message to the parents just to at least acknowledge them being aware and that they are looking at things and mindful of the parents potential concerns

“These people”?

SpanielLover356 · 02/03/2026 12:43

I'm still trying to recover from the shock of a school trip to NYC! OK, I went to school in the 1970's, but the most exotic school trip we had was an exchange to Brittany in France.

How times change & what a brilliant opportunity for your DC!

I wouldn't be concerned. As PP have said, if the FO have any concerns you will be told, but I'm certain that NYC is safer than many other places in the world. I hope that your DC has a great time.

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/03/2026 12:45

She’ll be even further away from the “action” than she would be here.

obviously if she was going on a trip to the ME that would be different

school wont do anything unless the FO advice changes

Throneofgame · 02/03/2026 12:46

New York is no more or less safe than any major conurbation in the UK. If you're so worried, you should consider fleeing the UK and moving to Argentina or a Pacific island.

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/03/2026 12:46

What “looking into” exactly do you expect the school to be doing

damelza · 02/03/2026 12:48

The risk is retaliatory terrorist attacks on US soil. Not necessarily any major outbreak of war there.
