School trip to NYC this Friday.......

AIBU ti think School should be contacting parents to advise of the current situation....

Our 15 yo DD is due to travel to NYC this Friday with School for 5 days, given the current state and everything going on involving the US I imagine the threat to the US and certainly places such as NYC will be on extreme high alert.

As it stands I'm not 100% comfortable with her going now and I know I will be a nervous wreck the entire time she is there (if it goes ahead). this is the first trip of this sort I've any experience with, does anyone have any advice on what measures etc School will be putting in place or if this is a risk School will likely even take by allowing the trip to go ahead?

so far we have heard nothing at all from School not even an text or email to state they are looking into it etc.

Lol.

From someone who lives in NYC and has for the past 6 years, sure, it's pretty filthy in places, and it does stink of cannabis (though I prefer that to the cigarette smoke in British cities).

I've not seen one fentanyl addict in 6 years and while I would say it's a little more dangerous than London in that they don't put people with serious mental illness in facilities, and perhaps there are some areas you probably shouldn't go (bits of the bronx, Brownsville, East New York), I wouldn't describe it as dangerous exactly. It's hardly on a par with Baghdad or Caracas!

Hole? I mean sure, if you hate world-class museums, galleries, restaurants, bars, music, architecture, parks and pretty damn kind locals then I suggest you stay in Milton Keynes or Hull or wherever and stick to your center parcs holidays.

You obviously haven’t explored all of NYC very much!

I don’t live anywhere near Milton Keynes or Hull! 🤣 I live in the North Yorkshire Dales in an AONB! I’ll quite happily stay here thanks, I’ll not be setting foot in NY again, it was vile.

As my 14 yo DS said 'if you're going to the US, you might want to worry about someone in high office 'grabbing you by the pussy'......

Or possibly trying to recruit DD into an international sex ring, about which federal authorities completely blank any reports of wrongdoing against the moneyed male perpetrators 🤷🏼‍♀️

In terms of walking the streets - as with any big city, get her street smarts about her... don't waft a $1000 iPhone about aimlessly at arms length, and pay attention to unattended bags & suspicious activity!

Otherwise, have a great time, walking crazy amounts in one of the most bonkers cities on earth....then be grateful to come home safe & not need to damage your neck vertebrae to see some meaningful daylight!

You allow your 14yr old to say “….grabbing you by the pussy…?” Hmm That’s absolutely appalling

DreamTheMoors · 02/03/2026 16:09

I see by your naive assumption that you’ve never been to the US.
Enough said.

🤣🤣🤣 I’ve lived in the US - twice! I’ve been to every state bar 2

Are you taking the fing pss?????

As a GCSE history student, he's astute enough to know that is a direct quote from the most powerful national leader on the planet today / most petulant man-baby in existence...

...depends on your point of view i suppose, but I think a healthy sense of irony in 14 year olds is generally to be encouraged, no?

But you can tell me what to do?! I don’t think so!

I see you are still busy taking offence to the comments of others - keep on keeping on 😂😂

There is no point engaging with that poster - it’s like speaking to a potato.

I mean then all that idiot Trump included 100% he is pissed with power and an absolute animal.

I'm concerned more about the retaliatory terrorist attacks and we are all well aware that NYC would be a prime target

What would the school know that the Foreign Office doesn't, OP?

mathanxiety · 04/03/2026 03:42

FordExplorer · 03/03/2026 10:11

You cannot demand someone “gets a grip of themselves” for having a different impression of a place than you did….. Grow up!

Was it just an impression then?

The wording you used suggested to me that you were an eye witness to everything you described.

PollyBell · 04/03/2026 03:44

''Current situation'' is not heppening in New York and I presume parents watch the news?

Zerosleep · 04/03/2026 03:55

I think you are hugely overthinking this. Calm down OP.

Epiduralady · 04/03/2026 16:20

tiv2020 · 02/03/2026 12:25

Suggest you look Nyc on a map OP then compare to where the actual strikes are.

I suspect OP is more worried re possible retaliatory terrorism against the US or Trump-related social media nonsense.
I can understand her concerns - the US is not somewhere I’d be planning to go at the moment.

Maybe you shouldn't bomb innocent people, then you would have nothing to fear.
I'm ashamed over the UK government involvement in this. Supporting Israel was sick enough.

“You”. That’s highly personal and uncalled for. I’m sure OP isn’t bombing anyone.

Some of the posts left on here have been quite disgusting.
I apologise for worrying about my child's safety whilst away thousands of miles away without us and said country being at war currently. I cannot do anything about the state of the world and mine or others opinions on it will not make any difference to this either at this time. My opinions and thoughts on my daughter's situation will make a difference though. I simply asked for others thoughts on that. Some/many have been very helpful and I really appreciate the advice (even those who have said they think I may have been being a little hysterical lol) I have read all of the replies and having spoken with my daughter, DH & hearing feedback from School on the additional measures they have in place we have decided to allow our DD to go on the trip, this is an amazing opportunity for her and one she may not get again so whilst I will be worried I'm hoping she will have the best time ever out there and I cannot wait to hear all about it.

I would have been worried regardless of this situation, however, this situation has hugely heightened this worry. I have not at any time passed this concern on to my DD but she is 15 and see's and hears about these things herself so alot of my worries are also from her voicing her own to me........!

Thank you you those of you who have sent constructive replies I really appreciate it.

To those who wanted to ridicule me for my worries and other posters who understood my concerns or those who think this situation is a simple as "check where the war is happening" or words to that effect I think you need to read more and realise the implications of countries being at war. It doesn't start and end in the place it is happening unfortunately.

Very well said OP. Hope she has a great time. You sound like a wonderful mum

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 05/03/2026 09:32

All mums worry about their children the first time that the child does something which takes them and extra step further away. Whether it is putting them into their own rooms as babies or waving them off to a different country.
It has now been proven scientifically with images of brain changes which never revert to prepregnancy state.
I remember a teacher saying that children on school trips are usually watched more than when parents take them on holiday (a couple of adults are on nights shift, travelling by coach is safer than in a car).
Personally I wouldn't fancy new York or anywhere in the us with the ICE people and their immigration people being so intimidating which wouldn't be a problem for school groups.
Look forward to their stories on return.

Exactly. I susoect @tiv2020 has never heard of mission creep

doormatilda · 08/03/2026 20:34

dd is also supposed to be going to NYC with school in two weeks, and I am also very worried. She has ASD (high functioning) too so I am worried about her being over stimulated or stressed in general, but with the world situation as it is - I'm so scared. I am hoping air travel is safer than ever - I hope the risks of anything happening there are very low. . And then as we have a foreign sounding name I was a little worried about ICE too, though NY seems a better city than most for that. Retaliatory terrorist attacks and increasing escalation are my main worries.
