To have little sympathy for people who've moved to Dubai?

Firstly, let me say that say that I am not celebrating the fact that people have been killed in the latest conflict in the middle east in the slightest.

However, is anyone else struggling to empathise with all the influencers etc who for a long time have been lauding it up about how much better life is out there, and are now suddenly missing the safety and security of Blighty?

We have our problems, sure, but at least we're not in the middle of an active war zone. Nor is there much chance of us waking up to missile or drone attacks tomorrow.

It's been fairly well known for years that Dubai is a soulless hellhole with a frankly medieval attitude towards women's rights. Yet people still move there for tax reasons and then seemingly never shut up about how glad they are to have done so.

Maybe this development will make all those people realise just how relatively lucky we are to live in the UK?!

None of the people I know in Dubai have any intention of coming back.

Purpleturtle45 · 01/03/2026 21:08

Geez, not the time!

Yuja · 01/03/2026 21:13

Could there be a way of you personally disliking a country as well as feeling sympathy for those that are out there - for any reason - and might be a bit anxious right now? Your post is in poor spirit

TempestTost · 01/03/2026 21:14

I think the question of whether Dubai is a moral society is not the same as whether people were foolish to go there due to the safety questions.

I may be quite wrong about this, but people I know of who have gone there in recent years seem to have been told that the situation was quite safe and stable. I would be a little sceptical myself, knowing how things have been heating up, but I don't really feel that others are wrong to have taken the assurances at face value.

ViciousCurrentBun · 01/03/2026 21:14

Dubai is not for me but this is in appalling taste.

Cupofteaandagoodbookthensleep · 01/03/2026 21:14

Really!?! They are human beings in a very scary and uncertain situation. Lots of people move abroad to try and better their lives. Just because they chose Dubai or are influencers doesn’t make them any less deserving of empathy in hard times or of safety.

ZenNudist · 01/03/2026 21:17

I agree it's in poor taste to say this. I do know quite a lot of rich people who moved to dubai amd thats looking like a bad idea now, but I don't want them to be caught up in a war.

Bluegreenbird · 01/03/2026 21:20

Good grief. What a nasty spirited post. Revelling in other people’s misfortune.

edwinbear · 01/03/2026 21:21

It’s not unusual for wealthy people to move to favourable tax regimes, they move to Monaco and the British Virgin Islands too. Dubai isn’t somewhere I’d move to, but I’m not particularly judgmental about those who do.

Fuckitydoodah · 01/03/2026 21:23

Dubai does not appeal to me in the slightest, but I can only imagine how terrifying it is to be there right now. YABU

MinPinSins · 01/03/2026 21:24

You're getting a lot of flack, but I agree with you. Many people have no choice but to be born into authoritarian states fueled by slavery, but for those who made the choice, my sympathy is non existent. Obviously many of them have children who you would completely empathise with, it must be terrifying and awful for them.

Starburst360 · 01/03/2026 21:26

You sound pretty snide to be honest. Imagine having the place you call home under attack

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 01/03/2026 21:27

My son hasn’t moved to Dubai but is there at the moment visiting friends. Does he deserve to ‘wake up to missile or drone attacks’ tomorrow’ too?

Jk987 · 01/03/2026 21:27

It feels like you’re suggesting that those people deserve this trouble just a tiny bit?

Wolfiefan · 01/03/2026 21:28

Let me correct your post.
AIBU to have little sympathy for people.
There. That’s more like it.
YABU.

Cant believe 60% are equally as thoughtless/heartless!

Yet. Give it another week or two of this happening on a daily basis, and I'm sure they'll be reconsidering.

There are people from all over the world who live in Dubai and people have moved there for opportunities that they can't easily get elsewhere.
Dubai and Doha are massive hubs for connections to the far east and Australia (also European airlines cannot fly over Russia now which was an option until 2022) so there will be people stuck there who were travelling to onward connections too
Throughout history people have always moved abroad for better opportunities/ chances to make money/ save up.
Of course there's been videos posted online where people are massively out of touch about the situation but there's also many ordinary working people, or people who may have saved up for some time to afford a trip far away been affected by this.

usedtobeaylis · 01/03/2026 21:32

This is horribly mean-spirited.

Lemonfrost · 01/03/2026 21:32

OP, what a bitter individual you are.

It reeks of envy to me. They are stuck where they are so are feeling gleeful that those who have moved are now facing problems.

Purpleturtle45 · 01/03/2026 21:08

Geez, not the time!

It really isn't, is it?

And yet so many of these awful smug threads and posts are popping up all over MN at the moment.

Really makes me wonder what makes some posters tick.

This. What’s the point of these threads? I’d never holiday/move to Dubai but honestly this is not the time.

ManukaMoneyMaker · 01/03/2026 21:35

People were sold the idea that Dubai was a little protected bubble in the Middle East. It's not my cup of tea, but I can see how people got sucked in. Regardless, of course I have sympathy for anyone who hears bombs over their heads, and hope my DC and I never have to feel that fear.

Nail on the head I think.

I've never had any desire to leave the UK but I'm always pleased to see people taking a leap of faith and following their hearts.

I can't imagine ever feeling anything but sympathy for those people now.
