What’s the most unusual name a child in your kids class at school has had?
Almost every other child I know is called Harry, Theo, Leo, Olivia….would love to hear some unusual examples of names!

I know of a Wolf, Arrow and Rocket. All boys primary age.

pretty common influencer type names lol

birdglasspen · 02/03/2026 18:49

After reading one comment were a Greek parent has given their children unpronounceable names, I’m done. Why on earth shouldn’t they? My children have Gaelic names. I had this crap at baby groups, in an area which use to be predominantly Gaelic speaking from someone from a different part of the UK. “Oh such a funny name, I can’t say that”
Racist crap.

Think about what you’re posting about other people’s names.

ImDoneOnceAndForAll2 · 02/03/2026 18:50

Fox was unusual but that was 12 years ago now and iv heard it alot more since then

godmum56 · 02/03/2026 18:50

Think folks, if they really are unusual names, posting here could be outing! also unkind.

Moody Spurgeon Macpherson was said to be named after two preachers/evangelists.

But 'Moody' is a pretty unfortunate name by any standards,

Setting their child up to be bullied and teased about his name.

Cornishbelle · 02/03/2026 19:04

Barcadi

Named after the drink of choice on the night she was conceived

The spelling mistake was only picked up after the birth was registered

Oneeata · 02/03/2026 19:05

Worked in A&E for years, strangest one I ever heard was a little boy called Swayze. Also baby twins called Ethel and Arthur around 10 years ago. I really like the old names that are coming back around but found them really surprising at the time.

Someone in dds class is called prince will.

tutugogo · 02/03/2026 19:11

@Cornishbelle

there were twins called Chardonnay and Merlot at my DD’s school (20 years ago) the mum introducing herself and them as they were an in year transfer said that she chose the James because they were classy, you can imagine what was said after she was out of earshot (think mostly affluent village with a dozen housing association houses)

Cosmo is of Greek origin and derives from 'kosmos' meaning universe.

Yes I thought so, or at least I thought it might be Italian and knew it would be a proper name.

People scoffing ought to look to themselves! Thinking Cosmo related to a cocktail really does say more about the onlooker than the namer.

YouLookNiceJackie · 02/03/2026 19:15

Chardonnay, Coco-lilybelle, Dakota, Rora, Rufus, Kitt

NunsOnTheRum · 02/03/2026 19:15

DD goes to school with a lovely boy called Marvellous. They’re all going through that teen stage and I saw him leaving school the other day when I collected DD and he has recently grown very tall and he is very much a handsome young man now and I just thought his name was so perfect for him.

riceuten · 02/03/2026 19:18

I work in an area with a large West African population. So I’m all unusual named out, to be honest, something like Sweetness, Charity, and Lovely are fairly unremarkable.

Friends was at its peak 20 years ago. There are lots of 20 something Rachels and I know a few primary age ones too. It’s a classic. I know a baby Maude, a baby Mabel and a baby Ernie, still on the old people revival names in my area!

Yeah good point. I've been a teacher for 18 years and I only had my first Rachel this year though!

Kerensa70 · 02/03/2026 19:22

I have a Daphne and last year a Soleil (sun in French) both beautiful and suited them both a lot. Have had a Bear too and a Stanley.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 02/03/2026 19:24

My boys’ names were brave at the time. They are now very unremarkable. We’ve not met anyone with the eldest’s names (he’s 30). DS2 however, while it was really out there at the time, he’s been followed by a gazillion others. They are all 5-10 years younger though.

I went to school with a girl called Mercedes 35 years ago (she was Spanish and it's not an unusual name in Spain, but it was in the west of Scotland in the 1990s!).

I read your first line that the name was 'Mercedes 35'! 😄

The cars are named after a lady called Mercedes Jellinek. I have often thought it would be more interesting if they had used her surname instead of her first name - Jellinek-Benz has a certain ring to it, doncha think? 😀
