What’s the most unusual name a child in your kids class at school has had?
Almost every other child I know is called Harry, Theo, Leo, Olivia….would love to hear some unusual examples of names!

I think the most unusual in my daughter's class is probably Olympia. There's a little boy called DivineGrace too, I think it's a beautiful name but I do think it may cause him problems when he's a bit older.

Boys selective prep / senior school - Tarquin, Ferdi, Rufus, Fergus, Montague and Otto are the ones that have stood out to me (all lovely names but unusual). Most are called Harry/Henry, William, Rupert, Edward, Charles etc. Oliver and Noah seem to be about the most popular names in both year groups (equivalent of yr 7 & 9). Oh and there’s a Julian which made me laugh as that’s a name that seemed old fashioned when I was a child in the 80s! Also in year 7 in particular there’s a bit of a resurgence in 80s names - mark, Daniel, Dominic, Matthew etc.

Cosmo! I stupidly said to his mum “…..sorry, i don’t know his real name!” thinking that Cosmo was a nickname! 🤦🏼‍♀️ As if you’d name your child after a cocktail

Dewi - pronounced "doh-ee."
The most unusual (what the heck were you on) name, was a girl called "Special" in my daughter's class. Thankfully, she's bright and popular.

I know of a spurgeon from that neck of the woods but he’s homeschooled with the rest of his siblings and they are fundamentalist too. I believe it was his father that named him,

There's Moody Spurgeon Macpherson in the Anne books. With names like that I assume they're surnames of family members, but while some surnames are perfectly ok as firstnames, I wouldn't land a child with Moody or Spurgeon.

Her sons are Ike and Rudi

Rudi is ok. Ike makes me think of Gen. Eisenhower, whose nickname it was, but I don't suppose many people of an age to be naming a child would think of him.

Moody Spurgeon Macpherson was said to be named after two preachers/evangelists.

But 'Moody' is a pretty unfortunate name by any standards,

Cosmo is of Greek origin and derives from 'kosmos' meaning universe.

We had a Persephone and a Seren both of which I liked. Boy wise though fairly usual names tbh.

I know a couple of Serens. Both have a Welsh connection.

I would assume that someone named Spurgeon from a fundamentalist Christian background was named after Charles Spurgeon, the prominent nineteenth century Baptist preacher, much like there plenty of Methodists named their sons Wesley.
There waa also a very well known American evangelist with the surname Moody at around the same time as Spurgeon was active.

Edited

The Duggars, a large fundie family in America that used to have a TV show have a gazillion Grandchildren now since all their kids now have multiple kids and one of them is called Spurgeon.

Hotandpointy · 02/03/2026 18:41

There’s a chorister called Spike at our church.

The one that stood out to me was Rachel
You don't often hear that on under 35s!

Friends was at its peak 20 years ago. There are lots of 20 something Rachels and I know a few primary age ones too. It’s a classic. I know a baby Maude, a baby Mabel and a baby Ernie, still on the old people revival names in my area!
