Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:42

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

I’ve voted yabu because moving to Dubai for lifestyle whilst not knowing how close it was to Iran is just staggeringly small minded.
Speaking personally I wouldn’t ever go, yesterday, today, tomorrow.

The UAE is actively seeking to improve things and have implemented labour reforms. I stayed with family there not too long ago and their house help is treated very well. They've got the wage protection system now and even the US State Department agrees the UAE is striving to make improvements.

We have human trafficking here as well.

You can like the same gender, just according to UAE laws and customs they ask you not to act upon it.

and they punish you if you do; please try not to downplay it.

placemats · 01/03/2026 17:38

To be fair to the OP, the lifestyle offered in Dubai is totally removed from every day life and it's almost like a sweet counter for children. @Medesres people make mistakes and sometimes it's expensive. Don't go. The attacks could last for months. Iran has the power to do that. Don't underestimate.

Holidaymumjoy · 01/03/2026 17:38

Say what about educated and net contributing immigrants to the uk, the majority come from commonwealth countries. None can up their family without full research surely!

Why do they ask you not to act upon it? It’s almost like they’re saying it’s wrong? But surely you’d find this abhorrent? Because this isn’t it?

But, I suppose they’re still people that think if you’re different to them, then it’s shameful and deny your own happiness?

I am not one of them, I’d also walk away from anyone I know or were friends with if they had this view.

In the defense of the OP, although I was fully aware of exactly where all these countries are, until someone starts sending over missiles, it doesn't quite hit home how close they are. Dubai is 1000 miles from the Iranian border by land, and you have to pass through 3 countries to get there. I can see how that could create an impression of distance in your brain.

PantaloonMad · 01/03/2026 17:41

HandfulOfMoths · 01/03/2026 15:47

It’s hard to be objective because I’d hate to live there anyway. What I would say is the situation is not going to be resolved quickly. The whole region is destabilised. YABU to not have known what countries surround where you are emigrating TBH.

This. Not unreasonable to want to move there but strange not to educate yourself first if taking your children with you.

MrsVBS · 01/03/2026 17:42

Even without the current situation it would always be a risky move due its location and the history of Middle East conflicts. I couldn’t think of anything worse than living there even before all of this but know people who love it there.

pizzaHeart · 01/03/2026 17:44

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there.

nope, never heard this^ opinion before

LakieLady · 01/03/2026 17:46

Lambington · 01/03/2026 16:21

There is a reason they pay westerners a fortune to go there. If something seems too good to be true it usually is.
And "the lifestyle" is achieved by expoliting slave labour - nothing more nothing less. Some people are ok with that. Some are not.

I've been rather disappointed by the number of posters who appear to be totally unconcerned about human rights when it comes to deciding whether or not to move overseas, tbh.

Indeed. The middle east was being called "The arc of conflict" when I was a young history teacher in the 1980s.

I knew it was in middle east Gulf and obviously Iran is in that area too but I hadn't studied the map in great detail until today.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there. Then something like this happens and you get a reality check

Dh going to speak to his work tomorrow. I'm sure they wouldn't send him if it escalates

They one hundred percent will not be sending him within the next month.

bringthewashingin · 01/03/2026 17:47

Itsmetheflamingo · 01/03/2026 16:47

there is obviously crime. Otherwise who is living in their prisons?!? 🤣 it’s just common sense

There’s been a spate of tit-for-tat fire bombing homes/business here in Scotland…turf war over drugs etc. Guess where the masterminds live? Dubai!

piscofrisco · 01/03/2026 17:47

Honestly you couldn’t pay me enough to go there. Too many people are not educated about where it is, what the government does there, the lack of human rights…. It’s not all sky bars and super cars. If you don’t know this and aren’t aware then I wouldn’t recommend living there. I know that sounds harsh but it infuriates me honestly.
I hope your friend is ok.

Holidaymumjoy · 01/03/2026 17:47

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 01/03/2026 16:01

The only 2 aspects of your post that are unreasonable are (i) the fact that you are only starting to question things (rather than ruling it out entirely) and (ii) the fact you did not realise how close to Iran it was. I totally understand that geography is not everyone’s strength, but surely if you are considering relocating to a different country you would educate yourself about where in the world it is?

I am not saying this to be unkind. But I do think it’s so important that people (and I am really focussing on women here) are not passive observers in their own lives. Moving abroad is a big thing. Even more so if you have children who are dependent upon you for their safety and security. It’s so vital to take ownership of your decisions and that can only happen through being fully informed.

In answer to your primary question - in my view the only reasonable thing to do is to cancel the move.

Shouldn’t your point 2 be point 1 and vice versa?

can you really expect point 1 not to be as it is (still questioning the move as opposed to firm decision to shelve or cancel) if point 2 says op didn’t linen Dubai was close to Iran, in the first place!

aren’t you expecting too much from this op?!?!

Oh I’m concerned about human rights. One reason I wouldn’t move eg to China.

You’ve reflected well. Privileged westerners want the fancy lifestyle while closing their eyes to what it is like for people from Dubai to live there and how hard it is being female/gay etc. but let’s close our eyes and sit by the pool and go to massive shopping malls.

Lararoft · 01/03/2026 17:49

Just to let ppl know that a border crossing from or to Saudi probably isn’t possible now if it ever was as Saudi has now been also hit by Iranian missiles & is considering retaliation.

WonderingWanda · 01/03/2026 16:46

As a geographer I despair. Here's a quick run down for you. The Arabian peninsular is a massive dessert with loads of oil. The result are some glitzy energy and water guzzling cities that are totally unstainable and continuing to fuel these oil producing regimes and ultimately the demise of our climate.

Then there's the fact that most ME countries are authoritarian regimes with terrible track records for human rights abuses and in particular with concern to women and homosexuals. Not to mention the political instability in the region....Arab Spring, Syria, Iran, Iraq.

Have I put you off yet?

I honestly think people just don’t get the issues, and it’s not situation that’s improving. I don’t understand whether it’s wilful ignorance, misrepresentation in the media or just a general lack of education but these Middle Eastern countries have appalling human rights records, women’s rights are terrible and if crime is lower it’s because punishments are medieval by western standards.

I'd looked up DH new office on Google maps and places we were thinking of living. Looked at nearby things on Google and landmarks, just hadn't zoomed out that far to see everything else. I knew Iran was nearby but I just wasnt thinking about that as no idea there would be war. People will laugh but it just wasn't my first thought, I was more concerned about neighbourhoods/ supermarkets etc

I’m not laughing, it’s too depressing and all too familiar an attitude.

I tried to avoid spending an hour there but couldn’t get a direct flight to where I was going.

This is why…

Well remember there is a supposed serious desire for people in the UK to throw of the shackles of human rights, so I guess they aren't that big a deal. Not when you think of the cup holders.
