I was just introduced to a friends husband, and he went in for a hug, but with that sort of kiss/not kiss on each cheek. (If that makes any sense). This is absolutely not how I hug, so the whole thing threw me off and I ended up somehow in the kerfuffle, placing my hand on the back of his head mid hug. I am absolutely mortified!!!! I don’t know how it even happened, but it was just super weird and uncomfortable and I wanted the ground to swallow me up. Help me feel better about this. I’m currently planning to never set foot out my front door again!!!!!

I once said ‘love you’ to a minor retired sporting celebrity of the club I support as he was walking off after shaking hands and a brief chat at a meet and greet. We’re both in our 60s! (I admire and like him greatly but I still redden at the memory).

Then I bumped into him again in the car park. He gave me the side eye…

I also regularly used to go the wrong way when giving one of those friend hugs greeting a freind’s husband and nearly snog him. Don’t know how it happened as I usually don’t have the same issue with other people. Neither of us fancied each other in the slightest but it was still cringe.

I’d love to think that was true but I’m more than three years beyond bending to speak to a seated mourner at a shiva (the home-based seven days of mourning after a Jewish burial) who turned their face as though they wanted to say something quietly to me and accidentally ended up smooshing their lips to mine in front of the entire room. The horror continues to drag me to the sunken place every time I think of it💀

Oh no 🤣

The only comfort I can give is hopefully anyone who saw it has forgotten it? ☺️

ShodAndShadySenators · 03/03/2026 08:05

I accidently kissed my husband's friend's wife. She bent in for an air kiss and I misjudged the distance (I blame dyspraxia) and planted an actual kiss on her cheek. My hand went on her shoulder for balance too, so that I didn't lurch even more Blush

You've brought the awkward memory right back, we are both British so naturally will never refer to it ever. I've always hoped she didn't think "So she thinks we're on actual kissing terms now?!" rather than "Oops, too close!"

wellstopdoingitthen · 03/03/2026 10:09

I have no idea @EBearhug but there was a long thread pulled in my dress afterwards as he had manically tried to free us. 🙈

simpledeer · 03/03/2026 10:17

I accidentally kissed my friends DH on the lips once. I don’t remotely fancy him and have no idea what the fuck I was thinking.

It was totally my fault. So embarrassing.

LouiseMadetheBestBroccoliPasta · 03/03/2026 10:21

I thought of another one, although it's sort of an opposite situation. As I said, I live in France, and have made many a mistake with la bise, to the point I shrug it off now (although my embarrassment did burn with the heat of a thousand suns for months after I kissed my boss's neck).

But my H, who is German (they tend to shake hands or give brief hugs rather than kisses), STILL - when a French person comes in for la bise - kisses them roundly on both cheeks, like "Mwah! Mwah!" The French people always look a bit taken aback, and I see them bracing themselves when they greet him the next time. The kids have all warned their friends 😂😂

With a goodbye hug, I once somehow ended up with my aged auntie's earlobe between my lips 😂
She's no longer in the land of the living, but the memory still haunts my dreams.

You've just made me LOL + I'm supposed to be working! 😂

Aged 17, I kissed a friend’s 50-something dad on the cheek as I thought he was telling me he was leaving the (very boring and sensible anniversary) party we were at. He looked at me confused and said ‘I’m going to the bar, do you want anything?’. My friends still remind me of this 30 years later.

Oh god no 😆Mortifying!!!

Oh god, this reminds me of an excruciating physical embrace with the adult son of my DH's distant relative. It was the morning after a big family wedding and we were saying goodbye to everyone, as you do. As we hugged god only knows how but his hand got trapped underneath the strap of my Uniqlo cross body bag, he then tried to slide it away as I twisted the bag away which somehow, only ended up moving his hand onto my boob and trapping it even more tightly to me. It's like he became stuck to me 😂
He and I were the last people to say goodbye so to make it worse everyone was kind of standing around watching us. It was mortifying for both of us. It was only the second time I'd ever met him.

This happened about 3 years ago but I can still remember every little detail 😆

😂

I remember a thread on here years ago that was started by a woman who had gone to shake her boss’s hand and ended up cupping his balls.

I am actually crying laughing at the thought of this 😂

Starlight1979 · 03/03/2026 10:56

Some of these are absolutely hilarious 😅

I have so many! Most recently, me and DH were meeting my best friends new partner (for the first time). When they arrived at the pub, we went in for hugs / cheek kisses / handshakes but it all got a bit awkward as we'd obviously never met the boyfriend before (so the familiarity dynamics were all off!).

I leant over to hug my friend but her bf stepped forward at the same time to shake DHs hand so his fingers ended up touching my boob 😂He jumped back and DH was just stood there holding his hand out to nobody. Then I randomly decided that because I had given my friend a hug and kiss that I couldn't just shake her bfs hand so I went to hug him too and he just kind of kept his arms in the air not touching me 😂

The whole situation must have been hilarious to any onlookers 😆

Are you Erika Kirk?

It genuinely doesn’t like something someone would think about much more than maybe being surprised and a slight laugh inside their own head.

LoveheartBear · 03/03/2026 06:50

This is the hug…

I just said the same thing thing! The friend will be getting pregnant very soon….

Nosejobnelly · 03/03/2026 11:11

Reminds me of my friend going in for the hug/kiss of a newly religious Jewish friend - he recoiled - we went 🤦‍♀️ for context we are all Jewish but he is now religious and we’re not (it was at a party of a mutual friend).
Some hugs can be really awkward though - I’m quite small and if a big man hugs me I feel a bit buried and squished!

FortyFacedFuckers · 03/03/2026 11:12

That’s nothing compared to me, I went in for a handshake, colleague went for hug, somehow we hugged with my hand on their crotch 😱

I once kissed my plumber goodbye at the front door as he finished work for the day! - the first work day of a job that was to take several weeks.

To this day, I don't know what possessed me.

I think it had been a long day and I wasn't fully focused on reality.

And before y'all ask, no he wasn't a demi-God - he was a portly, middle aged, grey and balding gent in a scruffy boiler suit - with a slightly shocked expression on his face.

I'm even older.

I didn't see him off the premises thereafter.

This made me 😂 cry laughing - literally! I’m feeling pretty fed up atm and it cheered me right up.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 03/03/2026 11:16

I mistimed a cheek kiss with my friend’s partner’s friend and ended up lip to lip. I think he was as mortified as me 😬

i feel for you.
Shivas are awkward at the best of times ‘wish you long life’ and shuffle off meekly. I’ve been both the bereaved and shiva go-er and unless you know the mourner(s) well it can be a bit awks.

Oh, I know how you feel.

At my dad's funeral of all places, I saw an old female university friend of his and my mum. I've met this woman a few times in the past, but honestly, not since I was a pre-teen. So a good 20 years previously.
I knew all their old uni mates were coming, including this woman, and she's quite distinctively looking, so I straight away recognised her.
For some reason, I couldn't tell you why, I marched right up to her, said, "thank you so much for coming!" and immediately pulled her into a hug!
She gave a little surprised, "oh!" and sort of gingerly hugged me back. But as soon as we separated, I could see her expression was very much "what the heck was that about?!"
I did the awkward hug with only two other people at the funeral, both of whom initiated it themselves. One was the wife of one of dad's cousins, and the other was a different old friend of dads.

Utterly bizarre behaviour on my part. I'm not even entirely convinced she knew who I was... But I have to assume that she knew whose funeral she was attending, and had enough memory to remember that her uni mate had a daughter about my age... Even so, I've been embarrassed for almost 8 years about it!

"Fortunately", I can blame "attending a parents funeral"! No one is at their best then!

A few years ago DS was in hospital for ages, it was the middle of the night and I was just done with everything.

I went into the 24hr tesco to pick up a few things and get back to the hospital.

I saw a male friend coming towards and just walked over arms out and semi collapsed into their arms.

He then sort of tapped my back a few times and pushed me away saying I was squashing his eggs

It was a complete stranger

And then he became one of those strangers that you see everywhere, so I relive it multiple times a month.
