I was just introduced to a friends husband, and he went in for a hug, but with that sort of kiss/not kiss on each cheek. (If that makes any sense). This is absolutely not how I hug, so the whole thing threw me off and I ended up somehow in the kerfuffle, placing my hand on the back of his head mid hug. I am absolutely mortified!!!! I don’t know how it even happened, but it was just super weird and uncomfortable and I wanted the ground to swallow me up. Help me feel better about this. I’m currently planning to never set foot out my front door again!!!!!

Being a man of a certain age where hugging other men wasn't "macho" when you were young and now, thankfully, it is. I recently attended a funeral where the deceased son came up and hugged me unexpectedly. I ended up virtually poking him in the stomach because I expected a handshake.

But it is nice when I met with a younger guy I know very well just after his granddad had died who he was close with and it was nice to hug without awkwardness.

I REALLY hope you meant the bereaved son…

I once kissed my plumber goodbye at the front door as he finished work for the day! - the first work day of a job that was to take several weeks.

To this day, I don't know what possessed me.

I think it had been a long day and I wasn't fully focused on reality.

And before y'all ask, no he wasn't a demi-God - he was a portly, middle aged, grey and balding gent in a scruffy boiler suit - with a slightly shocked expression on his face.

I'm even older.

I didn't see him off the premises thereafter.

I used to get caught in this hug nightmare so often (doesn’t happen now im older thank god) and it always ended up with the other person kissing my cheek whilst I would be trying to lightly pat their back with distance between us. Makes me cringe just thinking about it.

MayaPinion · 02/03/2026 18:56

My friend fell asleep on a train and woke up half an hour later to find she’d rested her head on the shoulder of the man sitting next to her and had dribbled on his suit.

HelenHywater · 02/03/2026 19:21

An external consultant I did a bit of work with in a very formal setting said "love you, bye" (to me) at the end of a work call recently. I suspect she was cringing for days.

DashItAll · 02/03/2026 19:47

These stories are great and have hopefully made you feel better, OP.
I hug my family, but I must admit I find kissing and hugging people I am introduced to or just met very awkward and over familiar. I much prefer a handshake!

Jeska7 · 02/03/2026 20:33

Great stories. Kissing the plumber is so funny but mortifying not doubt. At least once he’d finished the work, you didn’t have to see him again.

There’s clearly a lot of other people in worse situations. So I wouldn’t feel too bad. They’ve probably forgotten about it already. Or it will be “remember when…” and you’ll laugh about it.

CuppaTandBicky · 02/03/2026 20:36

Haha I feel physical pain at the awkwardness of this. I can't cope. I'd like to say you'll forget with time... But I know if it was me I wouldn't. I still vividly remember every single awkward moment in my life. So... I stand in solidarity and offer my sympathy

sarahbear87 · 02/03/2026 20:38

I need to know more about the plumber story 😂

SewingBees · 02/03/2026 20:41

I bumped into someone I used to work with in the street. I am tall, him a little shorter. I went for a hug, he went for a kiss on the cheek, and he ended up kissing my neck.

Being truly British we both pretended it hadn't happened and have continued to do so for at least 5 years now.

firstofallimadelight · 02/03/2026 20:41

I hate the whole hug/handshake /high five debacle. It’s my main reason for not applying to go on a quiz show. The one bonus of covid was the social distancing I never had to anticipate how someone will greet me.

btw I once nearly nutted my mil when I went for kiss on cheek and she went for a hug. Just awful.

FryingPam · 02/03/2026 20:45

I kissed a male acquaintance on the lips, I went for the cheek but mis-coordinated.

youalright · 02/03/2026 20:48

🤣🤣🤣🤣 brilliant

HeisseWeisseSchokolade · 02/03/2026 20:52

You are WAY overthinking is. This being England and not France, people are EXPECTED to be awkward at social hugging / kissing.

It's ok if you enjoyed it.

People get into verbal habits e.g. saying the same thing to her husband as she leaves the house every day.

The deceased son...ie the son of the deceased....yes I see what you mean. I hate English sometimes 😂.

MysticChevron · 02/03/2026 22:03

Slightly different, but I’ve just accidentally swiped right on someone who works at the same school as me. I think I may wear a paper bag on my head to work from now on 😩

surprisebaby12 · 02/03/2026 22:04

That’s so funny

Chickoletta · 02/03/2026 22:11

Aged 17, I kissed a friend’s 50-something dad on the cheek as I thought he was telling me he was leaving the (very boring and sensible anniversary) party we were at. He looked at me confused and said ‘I’m going to the bar, do you want anything?’. My friends still remind me of this 30 years later.

Chickoletta · 02/03/2026 22:13

I also said ‘Thank you. Love you!’ to a petrol station cashier.

InterestedDad37 · 02/03/2026 22:18

With a goodbye hug, I once somehow ended up with my aged auntie's earlobe between my lips 😂
She's no longer in the land of the living, but the memory still haunts my dreams.

staceyflack · 02/03/2026 22:24

I feel for you. I was at a funeral once (in a professional capacity, i was a student nurse). I didn't know the family well, but had cared for their loved one, along with multiple colleagues. I was really shy then, but my peers all kissed a grieving family member on the cheek when giving their condolences. I awkwardly followed suit, but being several inches shorter than most adults, I accidentally kissed her on the neck. It was over 30 years ago and still makes me cringe!

Doublebubblegum · 02/03/2026 22:35

Oh god, this reminds me of an excruciating physical embrace with the adult son of my DH's distant relative. It was the morning after a big family wedding and we were saying goodbye to everyone, as you do. As we hugged god only knows how but his hand got trapped underneath the strap of my Uniqlo cross body bag, he then tried to slide it away as I twisted the bag away which somehow, only ended up moving his hand onto my boob and trapping it even more tightly to me. It's like he became stuck to me 😂
He and I were the last people to say goodbye so to make it worse everyone was kind of standing around watching us. It was mortifying for both of us. It was only the second time I'd ever met him.

This happened about 3 years ago but I can still remember every little detail 😆

Time is a great healer and provider of mind bleach.

I’d love to think that was true but I’m more than three years beyond bending to speak to a seated mourner at a shiva (the home-based seven days of mourning after a Jewish burial) who turned their face as though they wanted to say something quietly to me and accidentally ended up smooshing their lips to mine in front of the entire room. The horror continues to drag me to the sunken place every time I think of it💀
