Slippers on holiday

Im going on holiday and am not sure whether to pack slippers. I am taking flip flops, so I could use them as slippers so it's one less item to pack.

Definitely pack slippers, OP. You can get really light weight foam ones.

You don’t want to walk around your room and bathrooms in flip flops that have been worn outside.

I didn't say I would walk around at night without something on my feet did I?! But in a hotel room, by the pool or on the beach then flip-flops are fine. Strangely enough I also wouldn't dream of wearing slippers to walk around at night... except in my accommodation.

Sorry - didn’t mean to imply that you would be totally barefoot. Over the years I have scrunched cockroaches (Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Cairo) and scorpions (Dubai) underfoot on the way to the loo at night, and kicked a small snake (Bahrain) across the floor - all in quite respectable hotels.

I would never wear foam ones. I only wear mocasan slippers

I get UTIs if I walk around on tiled floors abroad in the summer.
So I always take my slippers. What I do is take a pair that are on their way out and then I just throw them out before I come home so l have more room in the suitcase, The complimentary hotel ones soles are too thin for me - but they are handy for round the pool.

Edited

??????
How can walking on a tiled floor give you a uti??????

No worries and I haven't been to any of those places unfortunately - although I did come across a Black Mamba when walking back to my tent on safari in the Masai Mara (can also confirm I was definitely wearing shoes - boots actually!). My sister screamed as it slithered across the path and then a mongoose popped up from nowhere and swiftly took care of it! Felt very surreal at the time!

I pack the freebie disposable slippers that I got once when I stayed at a posh-ish hotel.

Same. My UGG slippers would take up too much room in the case.
I take slippers everywhere I go though. And they’re the first thing I reach for when I get home after work! I hate being barefoot.

How does that work?

Are you okay with tiled floors at home?🤔

🤣

I don’t think it matters what you wear, wear what you like.

Correlation does not equal causation.
You have more sex, drink more alcohol and this is the most common reasons for UTI.

falalalaa · 01/03/2026 09:48

UTI’s from walking around on a hard floor? Unless you’re dragging yourself around like a dog with worms it’s not possible.

reluctantbrit · 01/03/2026 10:00

We have Birkenstock sandals which we use at home as indoor shoes so we normally throw these on the suitcase to use around the pool area because we all hate flip-flops.

In the hotel room I wouldn't use them but in apartments especially in countries where are you most likely will find tiled floors I find them very useful also in apartments where we are going over winter and I don't know what kind of flooring is used and I just don't like running around just in socks.

BauhausOfEliott · 01/03/2026 10:02

Just… do what you want?

I’m really struggling to see why you’d need advice on this. Only you know how attached you are to wearing slippers.

BrendaSmall · 01/03/2026 10:55

I always take slippers, I don’t wear my outdoor footwear indoors at home so I wouldn’t do it when I’m away!
Also I don’t like walking around with nothing on my feet

NeedWineNow · 01/03/2026 11:04

We always take slippers. We’ve got some P&O ones that we got when we went up a grade on our last cruise. They’re lightweight and are in a cotton bag so easy to throw in the case. I just rinse them through when we get home and stick them back in the case ready for next time.

LittleBearPad · 01/03/2026 11:11

BubbleFree · 28/02/2026 23:38

We don’t wear outdoor shoes inside, I pack an indoor pair of flip flops but we never holiday anywhere cold.

Edited to add we don’t like hotel slippers, the soles are too thin for us.

Do you and your DH agree on everything?

hulahooper2 · 01/03/2026 11:11

I always pack my slippers , just back from NY and it was so nice to put them on after walking miles

Vicliz24 · 01/03/2026 11:14

Slipper socks for cooler places and flip flops for hot ones .

KimberleyClark · 01/03/2026 11:16

How about folding travel slippers like these - more substantial than hotel slippers but just as portable.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/03/2026 11:18

I get UTIs if I walk around on tiled floors abroad in the summer.

Possibly the maddest thing I've ever read on MN which is saying something.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/03/2026 11:18

It rather depends on how hot or cold it’s going to be! If hot, flip flops are fine. If chilly, esp. with anything like cold marble floors, I’d def. take something warm.

Branleuse · 01/03/2026 11:20

I don't wear slippers often, and currently feel like I have a uti starting.
Omg. Suddenly it makes sense

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/03/2026 11:20

I bought soft leopard print thong slippers in France when I was staying at parents holiday home there.

FlapperFlamingo · 01/03/2026 11:25

Surely it depends on where you are going and at what time of year. So if you're in the UK in March then I'd say yes pack them, if you're going to southern India then take your flip flops. More info needed 😀

PerkyOchrePeer · 01/03/2026 00:48

I buy good quality mocasan suede slippers with furry lining. I get them from marks and spencers and they last for about 4 years and cost £29 cheap slippers are a waste

Cheap slippers are not a waste to me though, if I'm going to chuck them every time after I go on holiday.

After walking around a hotel room I wouldn't want to bring slippers home, unless maybe they're okay to be washed

TheTwenties · 01/03/2026 15:19

I take slippers on holiday. Almost always hard floors and I get foot pain really quickly with bare feet. Can’t wear flip flops as they exacerbate another foot issue.
